I have heard it mentioned that all PvP activities are spartan training simulations but I haven’t heard it mentioned in game. Is that an official explanation or just speculation?
Sorry about the short post. I was just curious.
Yes it is, the multiplayer is simply training sims for Spartans.

It’s been that way since Halo 4.
It is offical that it is training sims for spartans aboard the Infinity.
Ok if you want a fictional timeline of how all the multiplayers work. I’ll list it below.
- Halo CE’s multiplayer happens after the events on Halo due to the maps having some on Alpha Halo but Mark V is still used.
- Halo Reach’s Multiplayer happens after Humans and Elites start working together. But Spartans still use Mark V armor
- Halo 2 and 3 and Halo 2 anniversary anniversary happens after Humans and Elites start working together. But Mark VI is used for Spartans.
- Halo Online happens after 2553 due to Gen 2 Armor being used
- Halo 4 happens after Galieo Base is created in February 2558.
- Halo 5 is currently unknown. But assumed during Halo 5’s events.
I liked Halo 4s War Games premise.
I just wish you could select your teams color and not be limited to red and blue. You could vote your color like you do maps. The other team will obviously have choices from a different color bank.
Naw, battle of Blue and Red!

But why would they create simulations using older tech? The Spartans should technically be using GEN 2 or at least Mark-VI armour if they’re sharing the simulation with Elites, since it must have occurred after the Great Schism (Halo 2 and Halo 3 storyline). And I really don’t see why they would recreate battlefield scenarios on Reach if they’re training with Elites. That’s one of the most bloody conflicts in the Human-Covenant war, and it just seems like a way to reignite bad blood.
Also, I think Halo 2 and Halo 3’s multiplayer must take place after 2553 as well since I don’t believe Elites started training with humans until after the ANVIL Initiative.

There is so much unknowns friend. I used the earliest possible time in relation to maps and armor and Elites present.
Though the ANVIL Initiative is something to consider. Halo Reach and Halo 2, 3, and 2A could be under ANVIl before Mark VI were fully made, and Gen 2 armors were finished. Making it before Halo Online
But yea so many unknowns. Only huge speculations.

And that is one of the things I loved about 4 - that they tried to make everything feel like it had a purpose or tied into the universe somehow
Ive always believed the normal modes in Reach were training, but Invasion was an actual combat exercise taking place in universe and were battles

The covenant were stealing cores from the UNSC in the exact same places over and over again? Hundred of thousands of Spartan-IIIs must have given their live for that alone considering you can’t really respawn in the lore.

Well the maps are based of real places in the Halo Universe. So its not hard to believe that the scenarios are played out in Wargame scenarios for training.
Sadly Halo CE and Halo Reach are still to have maps to be classified with Warzone designations. So all we can do is assume till 343i gives us a clear answer.

Well, i mean when you say it like that, it just sounds stupid…
I can see Firefight being a training sim for endurance but invasion just always felt different to me.
I cant really see an in universe reason for Invasion, especially hitting so close to home for moat UNSC

Well Invasion can be seen as a exercise of territory’s. Who is better off at protecting areas(or items). And how long can they protect them before the other team does their objectives.
Still valid training as protecting timed assets is kinda important sometimes in the military.

Makes sense. So itd have to be well after reach right? I cant see spartans playing both sides of the coin… gotta have some Elites to train with

The idea roots back to The Fall of Reach’s story about Spartan II’s training drills but I feel that Red vs Blue kind of spawned the idea of simulation training in the Halo universe but only after Halo 4 was it made a reality/cannon. There is a console in the Infinity cargo bay that confirms the “War Games” are real battle simulations taking place aboard Infinity.

No, they said Invasion matches were actual battles across the Human-Covenant war in the canon. Which doesn’t make any sense at all given the amount of Spartan-IIIs that would have died to protect these cores in the exact same locations. They must be training exercises, not actual battles. Besides Halo: Escalation already confirmed Invasion is in War Games.

Well yea thats kinda what I was saying. Invasion is a Wargames simulation. And not actual battles happening.
I cant deny them being based off actual Locations and Battles, we actually take part in the actual canon version of them during Halo Reach’s Campaign, which technically Spartan-III’s ‘Noble Team’ then did take part in them (bar Breakpoint which is the only mainline Invasion map that isnt in campaign)
To add to the above points.
Invasion is kinda impossible for Spire also normally due to the fact that
A) Getting near it normally was near impossible for the UNSC before hand
B) It gets destroyed after the mission.
Invasion for Boneyard could work if it was right before Noble team arrived there. Though it means that no Spartan died during it at all, I am also to believe that no marines were there also during it if that were true. Which makes me believe the way we play it, assuming if the invasion events happen, isnt the way it canonically happens. Maybe a mix of Spartans and Marines are battling it out and the spartans flee for some reason. (I admit that could lead on to the dead spartans on Lone Wolf)
Now for Breakpoint. Who says it was Spartans defending it originally in the actual battle the simulation its based off. We dont play it though in campain so the true events that happened there are unknown.
So that kinda equals that Reach Multiplayer Invasion is Wargames.(which you kinda agreed with me)
