Is there a reason to play this game anymore?

So, I’m a long time Halo fan and I’ve notice that this game is the most UNATTRACTIVE Halo game of all time. After playing Halo 5, there is little to no appeal to keep playing this game. I’m a classic Halo gamer, but let’s keep gameplay aside and look at the facts.

SHORT VERSION FOR LAZY READERS:
Rewards are poor, hard-earned competitive ranks reset, the leveling system is worthless, campaign isn’t fun, and nothing in this game is earned.

"Rewards"
343i added commendations and challenges to their game in Halo 5, like in previous Halo games. However, getting a certain amount of headshots or getting a bunch of assassinations rewards you with NOTHING. I don’t mean that literally, but the rewards for the commendations are uncommon and common single use reqs, and are rarely actual unlockable items. For all of your hard work and dedication, 343 decides to reward you with tissue paper and a used napkin.
Short Summary: Getting two Carbines in a Daily Log-in Pack is NOT going to make me return.
Easy Fix: Give us something to work for, 343i.

Leveling Up
343i has added in around 140-155 ranks in this game. Unless you want an emblem, there is literally no reason for leveling up in this game at all. You don’t unlock armor or weapons by leveling up like in previous games, you don’t look more badass or prestigous, and you CERTAINLY will not be impressing ANYONE with your “level 128.” If you look at super sweaty players, they all play on new, alternate accounts known as “smurf accounts.” Why? There is no good reason to level up in this game.
Short Summary: Nobody Cares about Levels.
Easy Fix: Add a reason to Level Up, and make it more challenging. Possibly add in Competitive Requirements.

Arena
Competitive ranks reset every month or so. All of your grinding is thrown down the toilet consistently! Not only that, but the easiest way to get champion is at the beginning of the Arena Season. If you’re late by a few days or even a week: may god have mercy on your soul.
Short Summary: Get ranked, reset. Rinse and repeat.
Easy Fix: Have Arena rankings be HARDER to earn, and actually let people keep their hard earned skill-based rank. Tie in Leveling up and Rewards with Competitive Ranks.

Earning and Bragging Rights
Those of us who had the Katana and Hayabusa armors in the beginning of Halo 3 were legends. Those of us with Recon? Gods. These items were hard to earn, and you had to go out of your way to get them. They were prestigious armors of valor. Things that you’d be jealous of if you didn’t have. Things that you’d STRIVE to get just because of the fact that you were jealous, or wanted others to be jealous of your awesomeness. That feeling is completely gone in Halo 5, where nothing is earned, and everything is either randomly given to you in RNG packs.
Short Summary: There are level 5 players that have Hell Jumper.
Easy Fix: Reward us for our time on this game, our skill, and more. Not just how much money our parents are willing to pay for our 1/236 change to get Helioskrill.

Living the Dream
Professional Gamers. Whether you see them as scummy no life losers over the internet, or top-notch demi-gods that devote themselves to becoming better at their passion, it is pretty safe to say that you may never be one. In Microsoft’s “Number One Xbox Exclusive Game,” there are just 8 professional Halo teams. 4 members per team. 32 players in total… out of all of the BILLIONS of people in this world. Well, at least if you go pro, you’ll have 6 whole people watching you play.
Short Summary: I’m Dropping out of School so that I Can Be Pro, Mom.
Easy Fix: Fix the previous problems so that more people are constantly playing Halo. More people playing = more competition. More competition = more fan interest. Put professional E-Sports games on YouTube so that fans can watch it whenever they want… #FreeAdvertising.

Campaign
Okay, I’m going to be honest, yet biased. I hated the campaign. Many feel the same way. Have any of you completed it more than once?
Short Summary: NOBODY LIKES AGENT LOCKE
Easy Fix: Halo 5 is already out. There is no going back :frowning:

After thoughts and Halo 6
Alright, so maybe I’m rambling a bit. Halo 5: Guardians is fun with friends at times, but there is just nothing bringing me back to play the game. If 343/Microsoft wants to earn more money, they need people playing their games. They can add in a system where you can unlock armor by both completing challenges AND using Credits like in Halo: Reach. If you completed a challenge for a certain helmet but you don’t have enough credits to buy it, then you can buy Credits with Real Life Cash. The harder the challenges are for that item, the more people are going to try to get it.

Players want to feel immersed. If they want to go for a certain armor, let them. It will make them feel more immersed. Just know that people WILL change their armor eventually. No matter how cool your clothes are, you are not going to wear them 365 days a year.

As for customization, you NEED to add in more customization options, especially if you’re going by the (Credits and Challenges) system that I’ve mentioned above. This will allow players to try to unlock more items rather than just a helmet and body armor. Players can also go for things such as knee-pads, elbow-pads, visor colors, utility, wrist braces, chest plates, back accessories (Military Backpacks, Katana Sword, etc), and more. I’d even love to see some shoe and glove customization options. The more customization options we have, the more immersed players will feel, as we get to create our character exactly how we like them.
**PLEASE DO NOT ADD OVER 300 EMBLEMS IF WE ONLY GET TO EQUIP ONE AT A TIME

Something that I’d personally like: BRING BACK THE OLD DESIGNS FOR MARINES AND SPARTANS. This would mean more than anything. Yes, I love the old designs for the covenant too, but having different designs for the covenant wouldn’t make the game feel any more realistic. However, UNSC Marines should remind us about what they’re based off of: US Marines, The most elite and prideful fighting force in the world. The toughest, most hardcore soldiers in the planet. Though futuristic, marines should still look battle-ready and intimidating. Looking at the Marines from Halo 4 and Halo 5, we can see that Marines look like they’re about to play indoor paintball or something. Also, WHAT HAPPENED to the prideful marines that we fought along with in the original trilogy? The ones that make us feel strong or proud or kick -Yoink-, and instill us with their badassery. Bring that back. Also, if Spartans are the best of the best, you may not want them to be 95% of the characters in the franchise. That kind of destroys their face-value. Also, no more spartans with fish-bowl helmets or gigantic tumor unicorn horns plz. Thanks

ODSTs need to return. Remember that kick -Yoink- game that made us feel like actual spec-ops soldiers named Halo 3: ODST? OF COURSE YOU DO! That game was lit.

The Flood need to stay GONE. We “Finished the fight” several years ago when Halo 3 was released. If you just bring back the flood and more Halos, then what was the point of Halo 1-3?

Characters need more… characteristics. More diverse characteristics that set them apart. Characters need to act based on their personality rather than what the story would prosper the most from. Characters need to feel relatable, whether they are friend or foe. All characters need a driving force behind their actions.

THOSE ARE MY OPINIONS. I can’t believe you’ve read all of this… or did u?

I still have a lot of fun with it. No matter what game i buy or move to i just keep coming back. I have all the reqs that are unlockable through packs. Im no where near rank 152, im at 144, and dont care if i hit it. I dont care about Achillies. I just really like this game.

Nothing on warzone?

Same here I really like the game too I been playing since CE and yes halo is still fun to me

Yeah i wish they added in challenges.

I’m fairly sure you are describing 99% of games out there?

That being said i’ve got every unlock available through golds, and still play for this thing call fun. Infact i didn’t play for a while to play BF1 (which could be argued has even less player rewards) and now i’ve came back to this game until something new comes out.

I do partly agree that more armour/weapons/emblems should have to be unlocked through a certain set of requirements as opposed to RNG.

The reason to play Halo 5 or any game is simple… For fun

Frankly (and this is a general statement) it makes me sad that people need a incentive other than they enjoy it to play a game now. This need of constantly rewarding the player for any little thing they do or they’ll stop playing is a joke! Gaming has nothing exclusive (cosmetic content) as soon as something is available people complain that they can’t get it because they’re not good enough and then it’s made available to everyone, it’s sad… This whole, it doesn’t matter where you finish you get rewarded still is lame as heck!!! and my personal favorite, people who complain about having to work at it, practice or “grind” as they say, to get something… Not Everything will be handed to you in life nor should it, you might have to work at it, shocking I know lol and fyi, your not forced to do this you know lol  If what you’re playing is starting to feel like work, I think it’s time you should stop playing that game and do something else… even better, turn it off and maybe go outside or something lol This really shows where our society has gone and what people teach there kids and it’s pathetic in my opinion.

Sorry for the mini rant but bottom line here, if you have fun playing a game, play it. If not, move on and play or do something else. Seems pretty simple to me

I think it has pretty solid gunplay and I do enjoy playing Warzone and Firefight. Even the REQ system can be very fun and does add a bit of randomness to the games. Never quite got the appeal of Arena.

Reason why I go play other games:

  • Graphics: The game does not hold up well compared to BF1 or other more recent shooters.

  • Maps: I find that a lot of the maps are too arcade like and don’t feel like real places. I never quite feel dropped into a battle in the Halo universe. Also little things like having the same copy paste and out of place garage for warzone. Sanghelios and Meridian maps are partial exceptions.

  • Map Aesthetic: Too many UNSC focused maps that involve you fighting in a warehouse or abandoned building. They also often don’t look that interesting or cool; mostly the launch and early DLC maps. But overall they made limited use of the Covenant and Forerunner stuff.

  • Forge: The graphics just aren’t at that point where they look decent enough. Be curious to see how new Xbox can make Forge tick. Plus custom games browser not being in at launch was bad, there just aren’t enough people to maintain it as a viable feature.

The map design thing is particularly a problem in Firefight where arguably there should be more of an immersive experience.

  • I do think some of the weapons and vehicles are unbalanced in the REQ system. Which means you tend to see the same vehicles and weapons appearing which limits variety. Plus the focus on vehicles can hurt that. Why spawn a sword when I can get a ghost. Plus some of the lower value REQ’s get invalidated by your loadout weapon so they just are not used like the boltshot.

Eh it’s ok with friends I’m in the same boat with you man. I can play a little bit if I have a group or people but that’s about it.
I wanna come back and love halo 5 but I can’t find it in me to play Halo 5 like how I use to play halo. It’s not a bad game really just not what I wanted.

I have to agree with Dead End 24’s little rant. If you’re only playing Halo 5 to earn things, and you find no enjoyment in playing it just for the sake of playing it, then you might be missing the point.

I’ve unlocked every req from normal packs and I still play it all the time. I don’t care one bit about CSR or SR rank. I play Halo 5 because it’s fun to blow up aliens in firefight. I don’t need any other reason. So it’s hard for me to understand why someone needs another reason besides “the gameplay itself is fun” to play Halo 5. Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand the appeal of getting rewarded for playing, and grinding for those rewards. I just don’t see why it has to be the only reason to play.

I also think this is kind of a weird reason to not play Halo 5. Of course the average player is never going to be on one of those pro teams. It’s like saying “there’s no point in playing football in the backyard for fun, because you’ll never make it into the NFL”. Also I think 343 has advertised esports quite enough already.

I completely agree with this point.

For Forge!

They need to fix the AIMING, in this game. The heavy aim patch made it better… but it went right back to meh. It’s a shooter that can’t shoot, smh.

Of course 128 isn’t badass, that rank means nothing.

i read all of that and totally agree with ya. I’m currently at 145 and couldn’t care less about it. Ranks don’t mean skill or anything now, just that you played a lot. The only reason i still play is because its the only fps game i have at the moment. So have nothing else to play.

All the maps of 5 seem to be bland and too arena or too cluttered and open… then we had dlc maps which got me excited for new ones until i saw they were just a reskinned version of a already existing map. Plaza and overgrowth and fathom and riptide to name a couple

unless you have hit 152, finished all commendations, unlocked Achilles, and gotten all achievements, there is still plenty to do in this game. I double there are many people who have achieved this

True. But I also think, even if grinding for 152, grinding for commendations, grinding for Achilles, and hunting for achievements are no fun at all for you, there is still plenty to do in this game.

To me at least, Halo 5 will always be fun as hell. Unfortunately for most of us, school is just around the corner and we’ll have to put down the controller for the time being.

i say if you aren’t having fun, might as well stop. If you aren’t a completionist, then these items won’t be fun for you

My Xbox one died a little while ago and I am missing H5 and MCC. Games are supposed to be fun to play. If you have to be rewarded in order to play then perhaps the game isn’t for you. Every Halo game has been different from the last. Yeah H5 has a lack of polish feel and the rewards for doing stuff was lacking but at the end of the day with the age of H5 majority of players would have gotten the rewards by now. I am grudgingly going to wait for Xbox one X to come out before getting back into Halo. H5 and MCC are good games but not buy another system now good. I was going to wait for H6 to buy my Xbox one X but may as well wait it out for the X.

I could go on for hours about the philosophy of incentives, the value of rewards, the de-valuation of rewards, motivation psychology in general… but others have already made the points. Play for the love of the game, not because somebody will give you a cookie if you do.
