Is the Weapon going to be a big deal gong forward?

By which I mean Halo 4 and 5 really made that whole thing a pretty central element of the plot. It’s kind of a love story the way it’s depicted at times and with the whole him trying to save her.

Now I know from speaking to friends, never mind this forum, that some people really do not like that at all. There’s a perception that 343 spent too much time and focus on that. Chief should just be Doomguy killing aliens. That by doing that particular story it detracts from him and the story generally.

Is that what 343 is doing here now they’ve introduced the Weapon fully? Is she just going to be a sassy sidekick or do you think there will be some drama involving the two of them?

By drama I mean stuff like:

  • They redo the “surrender that AI” moment because the man doesn’t trust the machine.

  • The Gravemind captures her somehow. Chief has to save her before Logic Plague nonsense.

  • They continue some tension with Chief over the fact she’s calling herself Cortana and she’s never going to be that.

  • The Flood get out so Chief does the nuclear option and uses her to turn that Guardian back on.

That sort of thing, or do you think she will be more of a cheerleader as you go around on missions; becoming more of a background character like in OG Trilogy?

Personally, she’s not Cortana, so be kind of difficult to care too much as she’s a stranger. Could be melodramatic and would the Chief object as strongly if Lasky demanded the Weapon be destroyed? I don’t know. It’s a tough sell.

I never understood how people hated the story between chief and cortana for 4 and 5. It wasn’t a “love story” it was two characters who became VERY familiar with eachother since one is INSIDE THE OTHER ONES HEAD. You work that intimately with someone for as long as they did (especially with Chief’s backstory of being a Spartan 2) and you become close. I personally like the balance they have been going for for 4,5 and Infinite where Chief is more human, while still being a badass.

Also you said that she is a stranger, but it’s only the first story that we have had with her. Cortana was just as much a Stranger in Halo 1 as The Weapon is now

You mean Cortana? It’s still pretty much her lol

Yes it’s a platonic bond. But the objection is that it makes her too prominent in the story and that it also messes with the tone and Chiefs characterisation. That’s, I think, where the criticism comes from.

But she is a constant reminder of what Chief lost and is being defined by how similar she is to Cortana. So either the Chiefs a creep trying to have this fantasy where he gets a second chance or it’s going to continue with this distance between them. He’s not really moving on in this situation and neither seems very healthy. It just seems wrong to get a clone and replace her. Kind of feels like 343 missed the meaning of that Halo 4 quote.

Not at all.

Experiences define people. You like the character because she’s been around since the first game. I didnt complete that High Charity mission on legendary for nothing. So when they ask you to care in Halo 4 it works.

It’s like Halsey is played by Jen Taylor but is a distinct character who you don’t really care as much about.

Also, people never seem to slip up and call her Cortana. Occasionally you’ll get a self aware Cortana 2.0 but usually they just use the designation as her name. In fact the only person I’ve seen or read make that slip up is a 343 employee on one of the livestreams. Just blurted her name out and corrected himself that it was the Weapon.
