Is the Sword block no longer a thing?

Can a timed melee not stalemate a sword lunge anymore?

Hasn’t been a thing since vanilla Reach.

I never played the original Halo games other than the MCC campaigns. Was it better with the sword counter, or without it as it is now?

It still happens to me in Reach from time to time. I thought it would’ve just carried over into 5, never actually noticed it missing until like just yesterday.

Still works in Reach. And it’s kind of a necessary mechanism because otherwise there is not a whole lot you can do against someone with a sword coming at you. Annoys me in Halo 5 Arena.

Personally I think sword counter is always nice to have. And it’s a great, purely skill based counter to the sword. Without the counter your options are really limited.

Exactly! It’s so annoying! I thought maybe I just didn’t have the timing down, but between the advanced movement and the lunge there really isn’t much you can do.

I’m going to have to play reach just to try it out.

Sword blocking devalued the sword as a power weapon making it pretty useless. Sword blocking, bloom, and armor lock thankfully remained only in Halo Reach.

It didn’t devalue the sword at all. It just made it less of such an unstoppable end all be all close quarters power weapon and took it down to a more modest power weapon capable of being countered like any other power weapon. The sword was still highly capable in the game with the right combinations and strategies.

It doesn’t take much skill to throw a panic melee at a sword wielder, I’ve done it hundreds of times. The sword is supposed to be a power weapon in close quarters combat, only outclassed by the shotgun. It’s strong close quarters presence is balanced by the fact that it has absolutely no range beyond its lunge. Reach with jetpack, armor lock, and sprint provides you with more than enough options to escape a sword user. Sword blocking gives would be kills the chance to toss a nade or counter melee, reducing the swords effectiveness in its ideal range.

Yeah, that’s the point. The more ways to fight back at any particular weapon the better the balance of the game. Escaping is different than countering. And having the shotgun or other power weapon be the only viable answer to the sword outside of either escape or a from the grave grenade is terrible. That’s one of my favorite things about Reach, is that with good timing, strategy and skill you can kill anybody wielding any weapon with just a magnum or assault rifle. In Halo 5 the only 3 ways to kill a sword user is a lucky grenade, wide open distance and a sword user who has no cover, or a power weapon. That sucks. If they get in close you’re just screwed regardless. It may sound like that’s acceptable for typical situations, and I could give you that, but in game modes where people spawn in the same place every time that is just spawn kill enabling, which is terrible. Awful. Rage quit inducing.

Lol I did just that after writing the post and man … that took some getting used to after H5.

So you enjoy these people running through the game getting like 10-15 kills with one sword because no one can react fast enough? If they go close quarters with you, there’s nothing you can do. Jumping, boosting, Spartan charging, ground pounding … I tried everything. I always die against a sword. That can’t be the point of a weapon. No other power weapon is like that.
