Oh the smg it sure has changed over the years. From the dual wielding Killing machine in halo 2 to the OK smg in halo 3 to the beast we have in halo 5! I talk to my friends about the smg and I hear two things. I hear it’s overpowered and it should be nurfed and its only good in close range so you just need to position yourself. In the end it comes down to the argument that attomatic weapons are good or for noobs. My best friends always runs with the BR and when he gets killed he says its not fair because the smg fires to fast. In my opinion you should not always relie on ranged weapons. You don’t see snipers viewing close range or shoties long range. You need to check the battle ground and use the weapon for the right situation. What do you Spartans think please comment.
No.
So many threads about this but no its not over powered. It does not have as much range as the AR.
Dual smg is overpowered LOL but can be difficult to control.
I personally think the smg is fine. My point is that many people complain that if you don’t use the battle rifle your a noob. What many people don’t understand is that you can’t rely on one gun to solve all your problems. So that’s what I think I was just sharing what my friends think!
The nice thing about Halo 5 is that every weapon is viable if used correctly. The SMG is not overpowered because it beats the BR at close range.
No. It has way less range than the ar. It just shoot hella fast, and can melt your face up close.
Your friend sounds like one of those people who wants to go back to the “good ol’ days” when the BR trumped all. That’s just plain silly.
Lets talk about the covenants lack luster weapons. Yeah the storm rifle is awesome, needler and its variants are fun, plasma pistol has its purpose and the beam rifle is typical of a sniper rifle. The Carbine i feel should have a slightly further scope or less recoil considering it’s hard to master but the plasma caster is just awful considering its purpose. It honestly just feels like it’s trying to find a role but giving up half way through. If u charge it to track an enemy it usually won’t do the job unless ur up close which is kinda strange considering that feels like a further range tactic. The fact that you have to charge it for the tracking ability and it doesn’t destroy a ghost with one shot is weird too. Easy to dodge, fires kinda slow, bounces off peoples faces, it feels like they’re keeping it tied back so its not a mini fuel rod. That’s a better topic as well as it feels there should be one more covy weapon. Whos for a plasma caster that can fire more charges if you hold it past the first?

As everyone above has said, its not op because once you get out of its ideal range, short of your opponent sucking, they will die.
Every weapon feels so finely balanced, now no matter what weapon i have i feel i can counter.
Heck, in arena most of the time i will actually just keep the ar and pistol unless i find a power weapon, or a weapon im trying to grind kills with.
The competitive niche tends to believe precision weapons should be able to win CQC fights, as they require a higher amount of skill than spraying an SMG does.
That isn’t to say the SMG should be entirely outclassed, but rather it shouldn’t be a guaranteed win each and every time. Which it pretty much is right now.
Take that for what you will.

If the SMG was able to put up a fight at medium and long range, I might be able to understand that viewpoint. However, that is not the case right now.The BR is guaranteed to win each and every time at medium and long ranges against the SMG, so the SMG having the advantage at close range is completely fair.
Precision weapons dominate long and medium ranges, why should they also dominate short range too? What would even be the point in using any non-precision weapon in that scenario?
There are more balancing factors for weapons besides “how hard it is to aim.” Otherwise, we might as well say that a Sniper Rifle should be better than a Shotgun in CQC just because the Sniper is harder to use.

Well yeah LOL I mean if you make a good play with the smg vs the BR you can basically win. Going up close and personal with the smg while strafing and thrusting to the side can take down a guy with a BR. However at range, BR can win. Unless you can’t land your shots. It depends on the range you are at and your judgement on what to use.
Within its intended effective range? Yes.
However its supposed to dominate close range, so there is no problem.
If it were over powered it would be a multi kill machine. How often do you get a triple kill rocking an smg? How about a double kill?
Now how often do you get double and triple kills with a battle rifle?..
Case closed, smg =/= over powered.
SMG’s are not over powered at all. They only win firefights if you position yourself well to ambush at close range.
lol the smg is useless past 10 feet
It’s power is balanced by it’s short range. Not OP, OP.
The range can be tuned down a little bit, but other than that it’s fine.
I used to think the SMG was overpowered too however, after getting a feel for every weapon I can confirm that since it is only effective at point blank range that it is not overpowered. The SMG is not an all purpose weapon keep that in mind, it has one function and one function only, and that is to shred targets at a very close range. In short, the SMG is perfect in its current state.
