It certainly looks like the purple ones shade, and the fact it’s called royal does sound like a subtle nod to one of the greatest musicians of all time.
That is possible!! But everything around where I live has purple going on in respect to Prince! But I am from Minnesota!

It’s a nice thought but more likely it’s called “Royal” because purple is generally a color associated with Royalty. But you can headcanon it however you like. 
Purple visor called “Royal!” … The noble (Noble team i.e. memories of Reach) title of Prince is Royal… Prince… Purple Rain!!! Get the Beautiful Mind wall set-up, it’s going to be a long night!

This has to do with European medieval pigments. Purple came from oceanic creatures, which was expensive to manufacture, so “only” the rich or royal had purple.
We have a lot of purple-violet visors already, and REX is a more fitting purple for Prince, but it’s possible they added it in as another for him.

I think it just shows that 343 likes changing a single value on existing Visors and calling them new visors.
