The pistol can be seen in Awakening Halo 4 reveal trailer, when Chief grabs it in no gravity and fires it into a door to escape the burning ship. It is a one shot pistol, and a new round needs to loaded after every shot. The “Rocket Pistol” may be remote detonated, like the Grenade Launcher from Reach, or could detonate on impact like the Brute Shot. It may be affected by gravity- we won’t know until we see it being shot while on land. It looks relatively powerful, blowing off a metal door of the Forward Unto Dawn with one shot, possibly implying its use if rumors of destructible environments are true.
I seriously cannot see the Magnum staying in the game without major aesthetic changes, because it looks so similar to the “Rocket Pistol”. Maybe it will be given a silencer to differentiate it, or will be replaced by a Forerunner tech equivalent that looks more alien. But it’s possible that the Magnum will be scrapped and replaced with the Rocket Pistol. Would this mean that everyone would start out with a grenade pistol on their hip? Or would the start always be Assault Rifle and Utility weapon (hopefully BR), making the Rocket Pistol a power weapon? Keep in mind that the action figure of the H4 Master Chief is holding a Rocket Pistol, meaning this could be his signature weapon for this game, which would imply it could be a starting weapon. Or, the Rocket Pistol could have been chosen because it is the only new weapon revealed to us so far.
I seriously doubt the “Rocket Pistol” will become the replacement of the medium range semi-utility (meaning headshot capable weapon). I see this more functioning like the grenade launcher in Reach, but we can never really know until actual info is released.

But why can’t the utility weapon like a BR serve that purpose? I always felt that the Magnum and DMR should have been more different.
I’m imagining it being more like a magnetic explosive, a bit like a sticky grenade, and I suppose it could always be remotely detonated. But I doubt it’ll replace the pistol, if anything it would replace the grenade launcher.

Maybe…
I could also see this decision be influenced by things like whether or not dual wielding is brought back. If it is a headshot weapon that can be held in one hand is fairly necessary, if dual wielding is not brought back I can definitely see what you are suggesting as being a major possibility. It will also depend on 343i approach to number of weapons. They might try to bring back almost all the weapons from the previous games, or just the most important one’s with the new weapons being the primary focus.
Know I don’t think 343 is dumb enough to have every match start with super powered rocket pistols. And the rocket pistol looks plenty different than the normal pistol.
Firstly, it’s been confirmed (although I cannot remember what interview for the life of me), that it is not a pistol, nor a rocket, it is a whole new breed of weapon that will be in the game. As for as whether it’ll be in multiplayer, forge, and campaign is unknown at this time, but one would assume.
To address your question, OP, I highly doubt (judging from the teaser) that a projectile with that much power would become a default weapon. Unless it’s an Action Sack gametype.

Thanks for clearing things up! I just thought it was a variant of the pistol we could pick up.

I initially thought that i was also a pistol variant, but I’m certain (again, I can’t remember where I read this), it’s a whole new, independent weapon. It also looks awesome, I can’t wait to get my virtual hands on one.
Guys… Im seriously thinking that this grenade pistol can actually stick(magnetize) to objects, including Spartans.
When watching the trailer the sound it makes sounds like an electronic beep.
I dont have much proof of this but… if i were 343i and made a grenade pistol i would certainly think that it would be boring unless it had a special feature.

Yeah I think it’s like the grenade launcher too, but after shooting the greande launcher and dropping shields, that pistol will be ready for a headshot. That’s what the rocket pistol does.
Taking a look at the “Rocket Pistol” and you notice its not really a weapon at all its an tool, more than likely something similar to bullet powered nail drivers we have now. This is made more believable with the look of the ‘load’ that the gun carries.
Take a look at the front of the ‘shell’ at the circularize indent, and what looks like what would be used to hold something in place. This type of tool would most likely be used for ship repair, replacing metal plating, or such when it would take such repairs in order to get to a repair station.
As far as it being a weapon, I don’t think I’d mind it for a few missions but as a staple no, and multiplayer no, it could easily become the next ‘noob tube’.

It looks like a pistol and it shoots an explosive projectile. “Rocket pistol” is a good enough name as anything.

I agree. If the trailer is any indication the projectile indeed sticks to the door (or wall) for a good second before blowing up. Tbh I don’t really like the idea of it being the game’s “crossbow” though. Plasma grenades kinda already fill that role, and are a lot cooler too.
I do see this weapon replacing the pistol. Many players have wanted the pistol to return to its former glory and this rocket pistol could be a good way of achieving just that. It wouldn’t be an OP starting weapon either because small, relatively slow moving projectiles are hard to use, at least they are with the borky thumb sticks. After all, 343 did say something about looking at CE for inspiration and an “OP in a good player’s hands” spawning weapon is one of the staples of CE’s multiplayer.
> Hey, it might not even be in the game, according to the video below.

Rocket Pistol Yep, im pretty sure its going to be in the game
