Is the ranking system broken

I stumbled upon a players rating which happened to be Onyx.

Now at first I just thought it was cause he was doing better at arena, but I took a look at his matches and realized they had

4 wins
23 losses
with a CSR of 1500

I have 23 wins
14 losses and am Platinum 1

So either the rankings aren’t working for everyone or I am just paranoid.

I know I probably shouldn’t care cause if a person doesn’t belong in their rank they’ll get wrecked but I am just concerned the ranking system is a little broken

I am a platinum…and my KD is a 0.8

Placement is very much RNG it seems, you can lose to Onyx players and get more points than wins against silver players.

I think everyone should just start from the lowest rank each month.

Yeah placements seem to be a little off, it seems that the system doesn’t account for the anomalies of normal games very well. I went 7-3 in placements for swat and got plat 1 after heading the leaderboard nearly every game, my friend won 8-2 and got straight into onyx.

I think that the system makes assumptions about who will win and awards MMR (matchmaking rating points) based on that, the thing is, lots of stuff can go down in a halo game. Someone might be having an off game, someone might have disconnected for a bit, a team of four average players will often dominate a team of 2 good players and 2 bad players, one team who is rated as ‘better’ may lose because of these reasons and thus the winner will get a significant mmr boost for beating someone ‘better’ than them, artificially inflating their rating, once this starts happening it throws the whole system off because then those artificially highly ranked players start losing (as they will, seeing as the game will be putting them against players in their rank) over a larger sample of games thus artificially increasing others…

It will balance out after about a week I think, but this initial skew will throw things off a fair bit.

I’ve been playing Halo since CE and was pretty good through H3, ranked 46 or something. I got ranked into the Gold tier in H5. My girlfriend has never played a FPS before playing some social slayer in the MCC. She got ranked into Gold tier… The ranking system is a joke in its current state.

I mean the way it works is the amount of wins you get. That’s how 343 described the ranking. But according to this people are placing in the wrong ranks. It should work similar to CSGOs ranking system and I hope they patch it real soon.

In swat i got onyx, in slayer i got platinum. I won more games and did better in slayer lol. System is clearly flawed.

Yeah, I’m a little confused on how it works. It’d be nice to get an explanation from 343.

I think it’s a great idea except for the fact I’ll regularly have an Onyx on my team who will go extremely negative compared to me and it’s obvious they were never meant to be that rank. I don’t like that the ranks reset every season, I got down to Champion 34 in SWAT only for my friend to tell me it will reset, I understand why it’s that way but I don’t like it.

But yeah it’s partially broken.

Yup, it’s broken alright. Our team played all first 10 matches together and we all got into a different division… Everyone should just start at the bottom and work their way up.
