Under the shield bar, there’s another bar. Is that the health bar, or some secondary shield?
It is a health bar that recharges when your shields do. You die when it empties completely.
A lot of people has asked for that over the years. Every Halo game has had it, you just couldn’t see it.
CE & Reach used health packs since the Mark V armor wasn’t as sophisticated, so they don’t apply. Mjolnir armor past the Mark V can actually heal physical wounds (biofoam, I suppose).
But in 2, 3, & 4, when your shields go down, there’s only so much damage you can take before the teabags arrives. And if you live, and the shields replenish, so does that shield-less health. And a lot of people who’ve had close calls have suggested it would be nice to be able to see that. And it’s usually not enough to matter, or to provide you enough time to make a break for it, because typically, once you’re at that point, it’s more a matter of luck than it is skill whether or not you wind up getting hit with a head-shot or a body-shot.
But yeah, it’s health, and it recharges with your shields.
I wish we went back to the non recharging health bar system just to see all the try hards rage about it. Wouldn’t make sense from a canonical standpoint though. Mark VI has automated biofoam injectors eliminating the need for immediate medical care for injuries.
Still would be fun to see all the rage though. “Y dEw i hAz to gEt teH heaulth paCks? WTF dis iz So StupiD!”
Ah, good memories from the Reach forums over at Bungie.

I was going to say “we just did that in Reach” then I realized you were talking about Reach, then I realized it’s been five years since that game came out. Then I realized I’m getting old because that’s how you can tell; when five years starts to feel like two. lol

I feel ya, bro. I’ve been around since the LAN party Halo CE days.

I am one that was always an advocate for my health bar being visible even though I know it doesn’t make a difference in most encounters with regenerating… But it certainly makes it important in my encounters as I love to play the odds and create intense moments.
Knowing how much health one has allows one to make tighter decisions on when to push or pull against plausible explosions and unknown possible damagers in relation to shield strength.
It also helps to judge latency through the splash zones of explosions, helps to compare audible cues to damage received and helps a player understand better how much luck they just lived by…
Finally good to have it back and visible.
I’m glad it’s visible. I hope they tie in an animation to your health that looks similar to ODST when your stamina (read shield) got low. How the screen started to turn red and it was a somewhat stressful experience.

Yeah, I found this confusing. Because in breakout you have to bust the secondary shield in order to get a headshot. But in standard slayer, only the top shield needs to be down for a headshot to occur.

Cracking up over here.

yea if i remember correctly, i think a BR headshot can penetrate the secondary layer but a magnum cant, so that is why breakout seemed odd. u think breakout could just be played w swat settings but maybe the magnum would be too dominant
Loadout bullets do not “bleedthough” in H4 or H5 but as a BR shot is a burst shot weapon, a single shot can chip through the last bit of shielding for a headshot. A DMR and Pistol shot both require full shields down before a headshot registers.
Breakout may have had half the shielding of regular Slayer but the requirements were the same for both gametypes, the large bar which is the Shield Bar, needs “busting” before headshotting.

BR was a 3 burst kill on breakout. Maybe they are independent shields with independent properties which can be tweaked depending on game mode. idk.
To only add to the shield confusion, both Slayer and Breakout still have an invisible health system past that secondary shield.

i think it’s just another way to show the shield, I think the second bar is part of the first bar

What?
There is no secondary shield as headshots register for non-sniper weapons once the first. There is a large shield bar with a smaller health bar underneath it. There are not 2 types of shield bars and an unknown third health layer. The is a third bar that is one’s shield time-to-recharge. It resets when taking damage to health and when sprinting before shields start to actually recharge.
Is it possible you may have experienced off-continent server issues?
Breakout had shields reduced by about 50% to decrease the average TTK, nothing else was done to the health system, be it a damage reduction modifier like SWAT or a third layer added. They did however, at least for the beta, swap health and shield indicators while removing the health display, and you’d have to ask them why that is… I suspect because it’s “Breakout” and they don’t want us using our health as a means to push or pull in a game.
Personally I believe they shouldn’t have done that switch as it leads to UI confusion.
