I keep hearing that halo 4 DOES/DOES NOT feel like halo. When you think of playing halo, what is the first thing to come to mind?
For me, its getting the power weapons and controlling them over the other team. I think of multikills. I think of “out-gunning” an opponent in a 1v1 battle. I think about calling out positions to teammates.
OPINION I’m not a fan of AA’s/Sprint/Ordinance. I don’t let this affect my opinion of halo 4 though. I’m excited for MLG and or a classic playlist. Do I like infinity slayer? Sure, but it feels like some action sack gametype to me. I want an even playing field. I want equal starts. Smaller maps would even be icing on the cake to me. JIP is fine for social playlists. Because i don’t take them that seriously. Instant respawn is frustrating.
Would I have preferred halo 4 to revert back to halo 1/2/3 play style? Yeah of course, because that’s what feels like halo to me. Have I adapted? yes I made it through reach didn’t i? But I do know what 343 is doing. Halo can’t stay the same forever, but they could have perfected the formula that halo 1/2/3 used. Change is great when its needed. But was all this change needed/worth it?
halo 4 is miles better than reach, and i’ll still be playing. But overall, it doesn’t give me that same feel halo 2/3 did.
TL;DR?
When you think about playing halo, what comes to mind?
In YOUR OPINION, did the change that halo 4 make take away the feeling of halo?
What did you prefer in the older titles that halo 4 does not offer as of yet?
Buried under all the bloat and broken bits is really good core gameplay. It’s just a shame this core gameplay is let down so badly by everything else in the game.
No. It’s just painted on and 343 expected people to think it was there. It’s not. at all. You can call this a Halo game all you want, but everyone knows its not. There are waaayyyy too many changes from the original style of Halo we all came to know and love.
Benja Aside from JIP/Instant respawn/loadouts/ordinance/Sprint/AA’s, what do you feel has changed from the formula. I know starting equally is out the window. and i feel that is huge for halo…
In MY opinion this is the second best Halo game yet. Sure it has a few flaws, every game does, but I really like it. When I play a Halo game, I’m in for great stories, and the best multiplayer of the decade. I think the only things hurting this game are the DMR, and the instant respawns, but other than that I like everything else. Even so, it still doesn’t quite beat Halo 2, if and only because of Halo 2’s epic story.
TL;DR
Was Halo 4 a let down for me? No
If it was second best to you what was first? Halo 2
Bloating the gameplay is all those gimmicks and bells and whistles like AAs, specializations, tactical packages, support upgrades and loadouts.
Halo has always, until Reach, been about players always being equal when they spawn. Having a higher rank has no effect on your gameplay and doesn’t give you access to anything that gives you an edge.
H4 ignores this long established idea.
Broken bits include maps, game rules (such as despawning weapons), JIP, Forge not working properly and custom game options being hilariously stunted and limited or just plain broken.
The core gameplay is there, as to me the way my Spartan moves and how the guns behave is just like old Halos. The problem is that everything else has changed, and its hard to ignore it.
If the game was just flat out bad I could move on you know? It’s just I’ve had glimpses of greatness now and then, which makes me frustrated and angry that 343i messed it up this bad.
H4 should have been like shooting fish in a barrel. It should have been the easiest game to make based on the old Halos… and yet somehow 343 managed to screw it up.
Well, when halo 4 is using a formula that is done BETTER in a different game, why should i not question it?
I refuse to blindly follow every change. Not only change that sets a different path, but also takes another direction entirely. These forums are for questioning. Im not going to waste my time writing a post about how great a game is, otherwise i would be just playing it.
You know coming to these forums, all you’re going to see is complaining/ constructive criticism on things that were changed from the last title. So why reply to a thread just to attack someone. I’m mature enough to realize i can play something else. But when halo is flirting with the fine line between COD gameplay and halo gameplay… why not just play COD? One because i dont enjoy COD as much as halo.
In my OP i stated that i WILL still be playing. I also stated that the changes didn’t entirely take away the halo feel. The core gameplay is there.
haha, I don’t think I could have writen this better myself. I didn’t want to force my opinion on this subject, but it’s a great feeling knowing I’m not alone in this boat. I would really love a playlist where Sprint/AA’s/Instant respawn/loadouts/perks/JIP were all thrown out the window.
IMO they would maps that would work without sprint/ AA’s.
