I was just curious if anyone knows for sure that the halo 3 marine BDU is no longer in service. I know that there’s a new BDU which is in Halo 4 but are there still any marines wearing the 3 version? Thanks =)
The last time in-universe the Halo 3 Marine BDU is every portrayed is at the Voi Ceremony at the end of Halo 3, which was around March 2553. As for the Marine BDU being portrayed in subsequent media, I think the last time we’ve seen it is in a flashback to the Battle of Kenya in 2552 as seen in Halo: Spartan Assault’s CoOp intro cutscene. As far as I am aware the BDU seen in Halo 3 has not been used in any Halo media post 2553.
However there were early renders of a Halo 3 style helmet in Halo 4. It’s a shame these weren’t used.
If you played Halo Spartan Assault you see some used not only in the coop cutsceen, as mentioned above, but also in the some of the pictures that goes with each level. The battle of Draetheus-V took place in 2554. However you may want to question some of that because they also show the cross branch bdu from reach.
I’d imagine so. No uniform is ever phased out universally across all units within a short time unless there are seriously detrimental faults in their design and implementation. I doubt the Marine utilities and protective kit seen in Halo 3 were anything of the sort. Also keep in mind that the UNSC Marine Corps probably numbers in the high tens or hundreds of millions, so procurement of new kit will take a very long time.
We simply haven’t seen them all that much since because Halo developers for some reason love creating new things for each and every game instead of merely giving them a graphical overhaul. They’re still there, of course, we just probably won’t see them all that much or at all because of the games’ trends.
I know that in Spartan Assault the marines looks like halo 3 and there is a pic of the reach army trooper holding a sniper. I’m hoping that the Reach and 3 BDU make a comeback in future halo games.

Possibly, though I like the Reach BDU better.
Although the Halo Wars BDU looks awesome, needs more camo detail though.
The Halo 3 era BDU may or may not be in service still.
