I really enjoy Anniversary BTB, but one thing I’ve noticed consistently is that whoever controls the Gauss Warthog has a massive advantage as long as they destroy the Banshee. That’s not to say that they shouldn’t have an advantage, after all they do control a powerful vehicle and they should be rewarded for getting it and holding onto it, but it seems like a disproportionately large advantage in comparison to an unopposed banshee which is considerably less of a threat.
Take for example my best friend who I play with all the time. He’s pretty good in general, with a 1.54 k/d, but even though he’s played Reach since launch he’s never used a Gauss Warthog up until a few days ago, when he hopped on the gun for the very first time and got 41 kills with it. 41 kills in one match with two sprees in one vehicle. In total, he went 51-4 by the end of the game. That’s a massive amount of kills even for a BTB match and would be nearly impossible with any other weapon or vehicle, even the tank or Banshee.
However with the Gauss Warthog it seems like getting a large amount of kills is inevitable even if you hardly know how to aim. It’s easy to snipe with, has a very fast firing rate, and has a small blast radius so you can shoot walls and get kills too. It also takes more sniper shots to kill if you miss the driver or gunner, and if you do miss you’d better run behind cover because the gunner will take you out in a split second by following the bullet trail.
I’m just wondering if anyone else here thinks that a Gauss Warthog vs a Banshee is a bit of an unfair match, and if the Gauss Warthog might just be too good of a vehicle on Breakneck. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to complain about power weapons/vehicles in general. I just feel like it’s in a league of its own and might be too good to maintain a balanced experience.
Quite right. The only reason it’s still there at all is because it was there in Headlong in Halo 2. They’re staying true to their classic renditions of the original maps.
But the gauss hog is far too easy to use. Auto-aim and rate of fire make it the ultimate n00b machine.
Still, I enjoy pwning with it. Dashboard when you’re red team, rush for the gunner when you’re blue team.

I respect that they’re staying true to the original. It’s really the differences between Halo 2 and Reach that make it more unfair, it’s not at all their fault for trying to be consistent.
It’s the main reason I avoid the anniversary playlists. Every time I play I get stuck on red team, and all you have to do with the gauss hog is drive around red teams’ half of the map spawn killing. I can’t remember, back in Halo 2 was there just 1 gauss hog on the map or 2?
its really no different if some one gets the sniper, spartan laser, rockets etc.
sure you may not have to put as much effort into conrolling the weapon as other vehicles, but its a far cry from over powered or any thing.
but i do think that some of the stats of the vehicles should be looked at a little more.
for example, i dont think the sniper should be able to take out heavy units like tanks, some thing like a hog, ghost or … eh any thing but the tanks really because if a sniper can kill a tank in … 8 shots? it must be some really crummy armor.
there should be a range limit for how far a vehicles crosshair can detect you and what not.

I have to disagree, it’s very different from getting the sniper, spartan laser, or rockets. Each of those has limited ammo and isn’t going to get you that many kills unless you’ve got a little skill.
As long as you don’t get taken down (and it is not easy to get close enough to a gauss 'hog to take it down without a sniper rifle or something) you have infinite ammo, aim assist helps a lot if you can’t aim very well, and it’s extremely easy to get kills with overall.
> It’s not that difficult to avoid. Half of the map is inside.
That’s exactly the point. If the only way to avoid it is to hide inside, you’re effectively cut off from gaining map or weapon control again, and therefore you have even less of a chance of taking it down. And it is the only way to avoid it, because it can move from one side of the map to the other in only about 10 seconds and can one or two shot anything else on the map.
Even a Banshee usually can’t stop it, you need rockets, sniper rifle, or a successful stick, or if the driver doesn’t know what he’s doing you might have a slim chance of hijacking it. And at least a Banshee has a reasonable delay between firing its plasma cannon. The gauss hog fires way too fast to dodge easily, and the beam is almost instant as opposed to a short travel time for the Banshee’s weapon.
The Gauss hog being overpowered is an understatment.
That aside, all it takes is a good plasma grenade thrower, which I am, or a lucky Banshee pilot.
Don’t mind it though, there are other things in this game that piss me the hell off, like when the respawn countdown hits zero in an Invasion game and you stay there with the “0” on your screen for 3-10 seconds and then you lose the game because the battle-bro trying to respawn you to help take the objective never could do so.
The whole game doesn’t hinge on the gauss hog. No matter what vehicle if it destroys its counter it will get.free reign until stop. On another note people see the gauss as an almighty indestructible vehicle when in reality it is a glass cannon, all it takes is a couple sniper bullets a sticky or some team dmr.

One vehicle shouldn’t be able to dominate a map, ever, Halo is a shooter, the Gauss hog was placed in to keep that Halo 2 feel, sadly the Gauss is a lot more powerful compared to Halo 2’s standards, and the banshee as well, both can easily destroy each other, once one is gone, the other dominates and likely that team will win.
That shouldn’t happen, ever.
PS: This is about Breakneck and not Headlong correct, the Gauss Hog has one counter now and that is a Revenant, that is the only other vehicle that will come close to getting it, and once that is gone also, the team with the Gauss has won.

I was referring to headlong I’m sorry that was my fault, but the fact remains the gauss hog isn’t invincible and if you can’t manage to take it out either it is doing something extremely right or you are doing something wrong.
I think it’s a really cool addition to matchmaking. And keep in mind that it IS a remake, so they more than likely won’t take it out.
It’s really not that difficult to take down either. Both the gunner and the driver can easily be killed by a few well placed pistol or DMR shots, and half the map is inside.
A good Banshee pilot can take it down with ease. One time I hit it with my Fuel Rod, and it went over the side of the map and into the water. “Triple Kill”.

There’s no Gauss on Breakneck, just the regular hog and now a Revenant…
