This is not a post to complain about sprint! As much as I don’t care for it, it’s 343’s game and I have MCC if I want to play a Halo without it.
Now I haven’t played the flight as unfortunatley I wasn’t invited to either of the Infinite ones… But I’ve been watching plenty of gameplay and I have spoke to a lot of people on the forums now!
My question is this:
What does sprint bring to Halo infinite?
I’ve saw a lot of people saying how the impact is so minimal and it only increases your speed by like 5%. But other than to activate the slide what is sprint even used for?
Do people think it would be better if 343 simply increased base speed by 5% and just got rid of sprint? If 343 have had to turn down sprint so much that it almost doesn’t effect gameplay at all then why bother even putting it in?
My main gripe with sprint is it takes away that fluidity that classic Halo titles had, where you could run, jump and shoot all at the same time. Players who studied the maps could pull off some amazing shortcuts and jumps all while still fighting. I do believe that the fluidity of combat was one of the core features of Halo and recently has kind of fallen by the wayside for animations that don’t really do much (Like Sprint and Clamber).
An alternative I could see working would be to take sprint out as a base ability, make regular movement speed slightly faster and include a sprint/speed boost equipment/powerup on the map. This way you could tune sprint in to make the player 10-15% faster instead of 5%. It would probably make the player feel like it was worth using.
Again I haven’t actually played the game so can’t comment too much but I really don’t see what use sprint is. If it’s to activate slide then why do you need to include a mechanic that just serves to activate another mechanic? That all it seems to be for at this point.
The sprint is so minimal that it requires you to reprogram your mind from halo reach, 4, and 5. The better player sprints less. Sometimes sprinting gets you killed because this game is about facing encounters rather than running away. Sprint is still nice because it allows you to travel further faster and that is helpful(even if its minimal). Just avoid sprinting in bad situations and you will be fine. Sprint feels a lot better once you remove the speed lines in the settings.

My problem isn’t with getting caught out sprinting, I don’t mind risk reward systems in games. It’s how it takes away from the combat loop and movement fluidity of Halo. I understand why it’s in the game I just personally think it detracts rather than adds.
I do think Reach got sprint the most right out of any Halo, apart from don’t spawn with it just have it on the map.
I think sprint is in a good place. I agree sprint is pretty minimal. I’ve used it a lot over the preview. What got me was not sprinting while being the flag carrier. That was a mind flip!
If sprint needs to stay in halo I’d say its ina good spot as ity stands
It allows you to traverse maps quicker, gets you out of tight spots but isin’t forced upon you like it was in H4 and H5 its a tactical choice now and the fact your sheilds recharge while sprinting again and you can almost instantly fire your weapon when coming out of sprint means it doesn’t punish people who choose to use it
Still think the radar form the first flight was a good compliment to it, but I know thats an unpopular thought

No, sprint should be slow and simply exist to open up new movement options. It’s a perfect compromise.
Can Halo purists just not get Infinite? Please.
It’s 2021 not 2001. As great as the original Halo trilogy was/is, if you released it that way today it would be DOA. So yes, Halo does need sprint.

In Halo 4 there was a massive skill gap in knowing when to sprint and not too. Since sprint is more or less useless in Infinite it’s much easier to make the judgement to just not sprint.
There is no reason to keep the option to sprint in Infinite so they might as well just remove it.

There’s always one isn’t there.

Yeah I can see why they’ve reduced speed since fans that didn’t like sprint in the first place are pretty vocal.
The best compromise for everyone would be to have it on the map like the other equipment. I would be totally fine with that, you could even make it faster to make it worth it I dunno…

Which new movement options does it provide that couldn’t exist without sprint?
Your weapon fires immediately out of sprint in this game not like Halo 4’s sprint where there was a massive delay to catch up to the animation.
Basically, it’s in infinite because it’s in COD and Apex truthfully. They could just bump player base movement speed. Unfortunately, the maps in this game are so obviously designed around sprint and clamber.

Is Sprint the only thing which sets OG Halo and nu-Halo apart?
In what way exactly, does Halo need sprint?
Is i343 incapable of making a compelling enough game without sprint? That’s what you’re saying?
There’s been other new games which have done well without sprint.

Without sprint, you could program it differently to enable sliding.

They do kind of make a point though, there are some who rage against the idea of sprint just because it’s new or because they tie it in with modern games thus taking away the ‘originality’ of the face Halo shows. People who are genuinely just conversing about the idea are fine, but if you get these ‘Halo purists’ as they put, it gets draining fast. All they do is belly ache about how sprint has ‘no place in Halo’ despite the fact Bungie themselves were going to implement sprint back in Halo 2 but scrapped it for one reason or another (time, the inability to finish it, whatever the reason may be).
Were Infinite to be a literal copy of CE-3 in terms of mechanics I doubt it would float very long before it sank to the bottom of the ocean. A game meant to bring in new audiences has to have some changes made to appeal to players who are more used to modern mechanics. The old Halo’s will always be beloved, there is no doubt about that, but a Halo made today, needs to be made by today’s standards. It can still be original in its own, unique way, but some grievances we have must be put to the side if we want that which we love to thrive.

The real mind flip for me was carrying the flag and not having a flagnum! Totally caught me off guard when playing the preview.

I don’t know if I would consider it a good compromise, but it’s not a bad idea for that though.
The compromise I was sort of hoping for was for Infinite to have both sprint and no-sprint playlists. But maybe that was a but optimistic.
I’m a bit concerned about how it will play in the campaign, considering it’s open world. I hope I won’t feel forced to use vehicles all the time. maybe the devs have considered this though.

It’s literally the only thing the flag carrier can do now. No more one hit melee or handguns, so without the sprint you would be a sitting duck.
