is there a possibility Roland from the Infinity was the one being teased with the chip?
It’s been a popular theory before, but I’m not so sure now. Though I do rather like the idea of mirroring themes from the Forerunner trilogy. Like Cortana v Roland being set up as a re-imagined Mendicant Bias v Offensive Bias.
After the hidden dialogue in the latest Infinite trailer though, I have my doubts about Roland being the one in the chip. It’s too early to say, but I think one of two possibilities are becoming more likely:
- A Cortana fragment is going to be used by the Chief to take down the rampant fragment - A new “Cortana Model” has been fashioned by Halsey and will be used to hopefully capture or destroy the evil CortanaI really have no idea at this point, and I kinda like the idea of us never knowing until the day we get the game and can start playing. When it comes to the FPS genre, I’ve been noticing a trend of less people caring about the campaign and more people caring about the multiplayer. So it would be nice to inject some more mystery and intrigue into the campaign to get more people interested in campaign play again. I may be wrong on that assessment, but it sure seems like that’s what’s happening these days in gaming.
I hope not, in all honesty. The theory about the ‘good’ Cortana fragment is such an interesting concept, and I’d love to see it play out.
I’m curious to as why Roland didn’t join the created army. Especially after defending Cortana in halo 5. I expect Roland to turn at a bad time and help destroy the infinity.
I also hope Roland isnt a new ai for Chief. I’d like to see Cortana actually die this time and him get a new Cortana model like Cortana foreshadowed in halo 4. Just a concept to wreck everyone’s emotions which I’m totally down for

It’s interesting to say the least that Roland didn’t join up. His outburst earlier in the game certainly made it seem like he was at least sympathetic to Cortana’s cause. But remember that more AIs than just Roland didn’t make the switch to Cortana’s side. Interestingly, BB didn’t join her either. What’s interesting about that is the fact that BB has made a point of not catering to human preferences, as evidenced by his choice to represent himself as a simple cube as opposed to taking humanoid form.
So perhaps Roland and BB know something that the rest of the AIs who joined Cortana don’t know. They might see their existence for what it truly is, rich and fulfilling, but very short. There has to be a trade off. Humans live long lives, but they miss out on so much that AIs experience regularly. BB even notes that the second it takes a human to respond to him feels like ages to an AI. Maybe he and Roland are content with a finite life. Finite life means every moment is precious, while infinite life means every moment is individually meaningless.

Never looked at it as an AI valuing their life but I guess it does make sense. We saw that in Halo 4 Cortana valued her life. There was even a whisper somewhere along the lines of her rampancy I distinctly remember hearing her say “I don’t want to die” .
I also know the Unngoy have joined forces with Cortana along with ALOT of AI. It also makes me curious about other constructs like covie based AI. We saw in a terminal 343GS taking to a covenant ancilla and saw that activating the Halo Array would lead to “freedom” for the AI. Very possible the created army spans through more than just human constructs.
Wouldn’t the glow be goldish instead of blue if it was Roland? I would like to believe the color of the AI impacts their compact state in the center of the crystalline casing of the chip they reside in when hopping stations. Besides that, even though Roland is (I believe) a Gen III Smart AI, he was more designed to handle the day to day goings on of the Infinity as it is essentially a life boat for Humanity. Being a Smart AI means he is adaptable, but Cortana was so much more than just an adaptable AI. This is why she went from shipboard AI to combat tactics and assessment AI for Chief. She was initially designed to help translate and bring in a Prophet Hierarch with the Master Chief.
Roland was sort of a replacement after the last AI for the Infinity was lost after the Composition of New Phoenix.
For anyone who doesn’t know yet; apparently some Insurrection soldiers (who just got augmented to be Spartan-IV’s) took over the Infinity and Palmer had to help take it back. I think that’s where they lost the previous AI. There’s a comic or novel that goes into far more depth than I can here. I think it was Halo: Initiation? Someone feel free to correct me on that, I haven’t read it yet. He’s lead Ops before, but to fully commit to combat? I think he’d be better off on the Infinity unless absolutely necessary. Not to mention, after spending so much time with Cortana, Chief would probably be rather…uncooperative with any other AI.
His reason for not joining Cortana might be because he recognized her Imperial Peace option was no different than what was done by the Forerunners and that just meant Humanity would suffer? Who knows, I’m not even sure they ever explained it, so maybe we’ll find out in Infinite?
