Old school Halo is probably the best first person shooter ever, in my opinion. Halo 2 dominated Call of Duty and was revolutionary for the first person shooter genre. Halo 3 followed the same path as Halo: CE and Halo 2, and was a fantastic game. Halo: Reach strayed away from the path, but at it’s core it was still a fun Halo game. Those games were “old school” Halo games (maybe not Reach for some of you) but is Halo 4 following this path? Halo 4 is interesting, as it is a sequel to Halo 3 yet it incorporates many Reach elements. Halo 4 has armor abilities, the DMR, forge maps in multiplayer, and all in all feels more like a Halo: Reach sequel rather than a Halo 3 one. But it gets even worse, 343i tried and failed to steal from the CoD fan base. So they added loadouts, and instant kill loadout weapon, a one hit anywhere on the body sniper, loads of aim-assist, hit markers, grenade indicators, and so on. Then of course, they ruined power-weapon control with random and personal ordnance. That was a big part of winning in Halo, and they effectively ruined it. So I ask you, do you think we will ever see classic Halo-style games again? I don’t think so, especially if Halo 5 follows Halo 4’s style.

I know you enjoy Halo 4 very much, just by seeing your replies on the forums. I also enjoy Halo 4 to an extent, but is it really the old school Halo that we used to know?
I agree.
I can found yet any game in forge test with old halovets BRs+nades, but few games.
H4 like BKs with camo+boltsh*t and camper style its the halo future.
I have zero faith in H5.

Halo never really took on CoD. If anything you could say it was the other way around. Halo 2 was so huge because back then, it was what CoD is today in terms of appeal and popularity. And H2 never went against CoD in its prime on the Xbox.
CoD only became noticed by the mainstream gamers in 2007, and grew ever more popular during the 3 years we had H3, beating Halo in terms of popularity during that period.
As to the question “is old school Halo dead?” well, the answer is two sided.
Yes, commercially and in terms of mainstream appeal it is dead. If it wasn’t, mainstream gamers would be playing H4 (and would’ve been playing Reach) more than they do. In a sense, what Halo WAS is a relic from the past.
Think of Halo this way: the juggernaut from back in the days that is now struggling to keep up with the new kids that are more popular.
Arena (/arcady) shooters simply aren’t popular amongst the masses these days. The masses want what CoD and their clones offer, and even then they stick to their main game (CoD).
Maybe one day there will be a renewed interest in the subgenre that Halo once dominated, and perhaps that subgenre will become bigger and more important in the future. Kind of what we saw the Expendables do for action movies…but right now: mainstream gamers don’t want Halo. Neither in arena form, nor in its current form.
On the other hand it isn’t dead and never will be. You can still play old skool Halo…just not with millions of people. And there will always be people who want that classic experience, even if their numbers aren’t enough to warrant 8-12 million sales.
Don’t get me wrong, even though I love H4, every Halo fan will always have a warm heart for that classic Halo feeling (even if we disagree on if that is CE/H2 or H3). But “our” numbers of “us” more loyal fans…of the “hardcore” Halo fans (the community) are nothing compared to the numbers of mainstream gamers who buy games like Halo. And that’s why, when a subgenre is unpopular, a company like MS can’t financially justify catering to a smaller group while knowing that choice will result in the biggest target audience not buying/liking the game.
There is no old school Halo in Halo 4. So yes it is dead. Funny how the new stuff has less interest and less people playing it.
While Halo 4 is fun, it doesn’t feel like its predecessors. Its like an entirely different game with Halo theme. I personally think Halo is going down a bad path and if it doesn’t stop, then what we are left with will resemble nothing of the previous games.

different? yes. new features will come and go like any other game and it will change the game a bit but its still halo.
every halo had some change. some went and got rid of that change (duel wielding) others stayed (skulls)
it will always be a bit different it may just need tweaking here and there
just my 2 cents anyway.
to each their own.

Dead yes. Halo 4 is vastly different than the Original trilogy. And yes the competitive playlist is coming but it isn’t here yet. Till we get to see what exactly is in the playlist and get to play it for our self, old school Halo is dead.
You aren’t calling a person who hasn’t been reanimated yet alive do you? You call them alive after they have been succesfully reanimated.
Can revive H4 rank playlist? Im not sure of it…
Old school Halo is dead. Enough said.
I don’t want to admit to it being dead, It’s still on the table…
Old school Halo isn’t dead but at least for now it is no longer the king of shooters. Halo reigned from 2001-2007 without a doubt, especially the community experience within the games. But one has to consider that before COD 4 the only shooter competition Halo faced was Counter Strike, Medal of Honer, and Gears Of War. But now in 2013, There is 1-2 new COD games every year, Battlefield 3, Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, Ghost Recon, Max Payne 3, not to mention all the other games competing outside the shooter genre. The fact must also be taken into account that halo is available on just the xbox while competing games can be available on Wii, PS3, 360, and PC.
The Halo Franchise has seen changes with Reach and Halo 4, while some of these may not have been the best choices most changes were necessary to compete with the now vast shooters out today. 343i is a new studio, they are still trying to find the middle ground to create a game that encompasses both core Halo gameplay and new FPS elements. Halo 4 was their first attempt and not a bad one at that.
Its our job as Halo fans to rally as a community. We must stop arguing amongst ourselves and pointing the blame on who is ruining Halo. If we as a community continue to support Halo and give CONSTRUCTIVE feedback to 343i, I am confident that Halo 4 can be a better experience and future Halo games will be better because of it.
