Is killing each other with melee trades anti -climatic?

[orignal idea scrapped]

edit- actually forget the mini game idea. this is what should happen. the person who aimed closest to the head (or closest to center of body) when they press the melee button should win instead of trading kills. obviously this should only apply when 2 people are 1 hit kills and everything else about the melee system sshould stay the same if another person is not 1 hit kill

edit- another idea, the game should calculate who lunged the furthest and their velocity to determine who wins a trade. this basically decides who pressed their mellee button first wins. It also gives the aggressor advantage. If someone is standing still and im moving forward and we have the same lunge distance, i should win based on my previous velocity. none of this will have weird visuals either as the server will be able to calculate in time as a player is lunging who willl win before 2 players even hit each other. if there is not much lunge distance involved then players should just trade to reduce visual bugs. If lunge distance and velocity are very similar then it should also be a trade too to reduce frustration

First gears of war had no mini game, and it worked just fine. There are several choices you can make to avoid a melee trade, and janky mechanics that make it more complicated will probably just unevenly give one side an advantage as we have some serious network/lag issues still occuring.

I don’t remember how Gears of War did it, but wouldn’t that make them easily killed because someone could shoot them while they’re fighting each other?

in gears 5, the chainsaw battle lasts a second and its based on how fast you can tap a button. sure you could probably get shot but it might be better than just killing eachother.

I guess.
I wonder if it would make sense to have it give a chance to win against Energy Swords without one.

I really don’t feel liek adding finger fatiuge. Just let a trade happen if we both have the right conditions. Honestly its easy just to bait a punch while you pull away and just shoot them down and just win with no trade.

that kind of remove the point/strength of energy swords. Hammer already beat energy swords, vehicles and up close melee, just no far range lunge. I honestly find energy swords easy to deal with because you cant swap and swing right away so people cant surprise unless corner camping which is the case with any close range weapon. (or if they are skilled with a grappling hook but if you had a grappling hook, you coudl easily stay away too)

No, it’s funny. Keep it.

Those problems will hopefully be fixed at some point, so I wouldn’t factor them into this.

Maybe they could make it so you have to quickly press random buttons that appear on the screen.

With the lunge we have?
Not really.

They would still be helpful if you used them on someone who hasn’t seen you, or someone who didn’t time the melee right or even try to use it.

I think I’ve been killed by an Energy Sword despite swinging the Gravity Hammer.

It’s funny, but it gets tiresome.
It seems like almost every AR battle turns into a double melee.

it doesnt have to be based on spamming a button, it could be like a crosshair that quickly goes across the enemy and that you press once to stop and the one with the most accuracy wins and punches the other guy.

most my AR battles end with no melee at all i just use spacing and end them before it gets to melee.
The lunge is nothing compared to halo 2 melee, that was brutal… like so brutal that the first time i went to melee someone i lunged over their shoulders and flew off the cliff to my death because i was use to halo 1 melee. I miss melee and see people miss melee all time, so I guess experiences vary. I am missing less now that I am getting better but i honestly rather just kill them before getting that close.

Energy sword losing to hammer is you not swinging right time, and or lag hence my objection to some annoying mini game. Just let it be halo melee like it has been for years.

i would fine a mini game very tiresome. For me a melee trade is satisfying because I am often doing it as a last ditch effort, because again… i prefer to kill people before i am that close, switch weapons when im out of bullets, etc.

to be clear, im not baiting an actaul in range lunge melee, but rather the player believes they will actauly get in melee range in time before dying, and they will not. sometimes in desperation the melee before in lunge range. Again though… the lock on-stickiness-lunge of the melee is very soft compared to halo 2’s which was so brutal and miserable for me that this is actually enjoyable to me.

how would it be tiresome if as you say, you avoid them?

Because I still enjoy it when it happens, even if i prefer to come out on top without trading, a mini game just adds another thing to worry about that isnt core to halo gameplay. Also every game that has said feature i have found to be not enjoyable, so the concept/experience of it is very tiring. Be it Mech Assault 2 hijacking or Jedi Academy saber lock click spam, etc. Cutscene, push the right button at right time mechanics are super gimmicky. I find it insane it’s even being suggested. (then again i wonder if we have a demograph where people only who want it different pop up on forums versus those happy with status quo, because I see a lot ‘gamepad too easy’ complaining and in my recent birthday… the guys who were pc keyboard and mouse completely wrecked everyone else even though the knb people don’t even play halo like the xbox guys do.)

i just like games with a good illusion. trading melee kills 5 times a match makes me feel like 2 amateurs just fought rather than some epic fight between super soldiers.

actually forget the mini game idea. this is what should happen. the person who aimed closest to the head when they press the melee button should win instead of trading.

Melee trading seems fine relative to other issues with melees. I constantly hear melee sounds and do no damage, as well as on the flip side I’ve heard the sound of someone melee me and I’ve took no damage from it. Sometimes you get no lunge, sometimes you get a 10 ft lunge - there seems to be no consistency, rhyme nor reason to it all. I’d definitely rather a focus on fixing them in the first place than making up some alternative mechanics so that a trade doesn’t happen

thats just netccode issues they will fix. The melee trading doesnt look like its going anywhere. its so underwhelming watching even pro players trade on a regular basis and it looks dumb too.

…OR just do what Halo 3 did with melee…

then its just best connection who wins. that was fine back in peer 2 peer days when everyone was matching to players near where they live.
