Is join in-game really worth it?

The ability to join in game is much like a double sided sword. It is also a concept that can either be really loved, or really hated.

If you’ve played halo before Halo 4, you will understand. It is never fun playing against the odds. Whether it’s 4 v 8 in big team or even 1 on 2 in doubles. It is never fun when the fight is unfair. Although, there are always those youtube videos and everyone has their stories of how they defeated the other team when it was all-against-one. Everyone has done it at least one time, and if you havent, youre the dog that hasnt had it’s day yet.

But is it really worth joining in-game? It was such a big controversy quitting in Halo 2 and Halo 3. Especially in H3 when it said “The UNSC will not tolerate quitting: Yes, i am a quitter and need to be penalized” and you felt a pinge of guilt when you quit when you didnt have the guts to play 1 v 4 on Last Resort or 1 v 8 on Valhalla.

The quality of playing, finishing, or even leaving a game early on Halo has diminished. In Reach i actually agreed with the quit ban, despite the fact that my connection was awful and every time i lagged out, it was considered a quit, and i had to to wait in the lobby for ten minutes to wait the quit ban out. But now people can come and go as they please. Nothing really wrong with that, but when someone joins the game to just get a first strike kill to get the challenge, and not even to really enjoy the actual playing of a full game, it is kind of irking.

There is no loss of experience. No reduction of your skill rank. And no ban or overall penalization. There is no more consequence for quitting other than the fact that it might count as a loss (i’m not entirely sure).

Maybe there should be a playlist where join-in game is not allowed? and quitting is penalized? just a thought. is not likely whatsoever, but is a thought.

Fix JIP so it doesn’t:

Put people in games that are almost over.
Put people in games with a massive skill level difference.
Put people in games without being able to toggle JIP on/off in some form (such as being able to ignore JIP every other match).

I find jip to be an important part in trying to make games that are unfair fair again. I have played in games where jip does not work, and it is not fun. However I have also played games where jip has put some people in my party on the other team. Really I think the jip system just needs some revision.

All in all i think it really is modeled off of the system that is used in Call of Duty. Not even trying to be that kind of person, but it seems almost exactly the same.

JIP is what its acronym states: it JIPS everyone :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Win.

We should have strict punishment for quitters and a join in progress system that does not drop one into a match that is soon over or with either team at a significant point advantage. That way JIP helps those who have quitters for teammates without incentivizing quitting to begin with and without punishing those joining the game. As long as punishment for quitting is non-existent, players will see JIP as a reason to quit not as a means of remedying the problem, and quitting will just get worse and worse.

I don’t mind join in progress
I think it works well for most people that search SOLO or with 2 or 3 people
BUT it does not work 4 full parties in any playlist.
if I have a full party of 5 in CTF I should not join in progress and be split from my party
if I have a full party of 8 in BigTeamBattle I should not join in progress and be split into 2 different teams
Chances are if I’m searching with someone it means i don’t want to play against them
The system shouldn’t ever JIP a Full party / shouldn’t split the party up
Please please stop trying to make me play vs my friends
And yes i always search with a Full Party/Team

Hate it, hate it to death, seriously sometimes it doesn’t even work.

This is fine, but when most people complain about JiP they are coming from the fact they were put into a game that is either almost over and are losing or just starting and are losing. People do not realize that JiP isn’t going to work in your favor. It is there to try an even up some of the games where people have left and most of the time people leave the losing team mostly because of doing bad and raging. (This doesn’t include the other reasons why people leave)

It is like they always want to win and be on the winning team if JiP throws them into a match.

343i needs to implement Ranked & Social matchmaking areas, much like what was done in Halo 3. Keep JIP in the social playlists, and disable it in ranked.

Anyone have a problem with this?

There actually is a ban. It’s an instant 60 mins ban for quitting games.

And it doesn’t warn you either (Reach told you were on probation, and you KNEW that if you quit another game you would be banned).

JiP encourages quitters, no question about it. Then 343 decides to be hypocritical and try to ban those people who are just doing what the game says is ok. Makes perfect sense, I totally belive they were sober when they decided that insert sarcasm font here.

JiP is terrible, what’s the point of a voting screen if you don’t actually get a choice in the map with JiP? What’s the point in starting a match with even teams and an intended fair game when you force people to start a game already losing and down players? Is whoever designed JiP literally mentally handicapped?

this is the largest aspect that i wish they included in halo 4… but they didnt include it. which is why halo 4 ultimately fails.

What about quitters matchmaking? Those who quit too much will be matched with other quitters. By the way, it’s bad to quit.

This then it wouldnt be too bad

Overall, the ability for players to join games in progress is a vast improvement over how things went in the past. One of my greatest frustrations with previous Halo titles was imbalances created by quitters, whether it is on my team or the other team. Reach’s solution was decent, but systems of punishment are never ideal; how Halo 4 handles it is fantastic. Sure, when you join games in progress you’re usually going to be on the loosing team. So what? Is winning the be-all and end-all to your enjoyment of the game? It sure isn’t for me. I don’t care if I win or loose; what I care about is having fun and those occasional OMFGs, WTF, and LOLzy game moments.

overall…what you just said… it that the join in progress method isnt even worth it…
