Hi. Halo Infinite looks really fun. A friend keeps telling me that I should start playing Halo 5 to get ready for it, but the game is getting close to being six years old. I just want to know if the multiplayer is still populated enough for a casual guy to step in and have a good time. If it is, where do you recommend I start? I like both PvP and PvE games, so throw any suggestions out there.
Halo 5 is a very difficult game to get into. It’s populated to get games, I still play it, and as far as where you should start? It depends on what you want to play.
Halo 5 has a quickplay playlist where there is I think it’s 3 maps, slayer, and not ranked. I actually DON’T recommend playing that. The matches can be extremely unfair. It’s pretty much the unofficial warm up playlist at this point. A big hit or miss.
Imho, your best bet is to play ranked so that the system begins to calculate your skill level after at least 2 matches and you get some decent fair matches that should feel fun to play in while still being competitive.
So thats the slayer, objective side of things. Make sure you read the playlist settings so you understand if anything has been modified and/or turned off.
Theres also the Fiesta modes, btb, etc…there’s an unranked section but even though it’s unranked it can feel just as sweaty if not more sometimes.
For pve, there’s fire fight and warzone (pve mixed with pvp). Idk the population in these playlists, but I’m sure people still play them. There’s only a few playlists I play personally so I can’t really speak on everything.
Lastly, check out the custom games browser. Some people host casual laid back games, competitive games, people looking for players to become part of their spartan company etc.
And this friend you speak of…make sure he tags along in your games. Playing halo 5 alone can be…I dont even know what to type here. It’s just way different having at least 1 homie with you. For me it’s usually the difference of turning my Xbox off after 15 minutes or less, vs a few hours of game time with friends. Don’t get me wrong…I love playing the game…but you’ll see what I mean when you do play. If you need any help with anything in it, feel free to send me a msg If you see me online.
Halo infinite won’t play like halo 5, but I always think it’s a good idea to play the current game out. The refined mechanics usually carry over. Like basic walking, shooting, crouching, those things will probably feel at least a bit similar. The old games for example…you really couldn’t instantly crouch strafe like how you can in halo 5.
Thanks for the incredibly detailed response. I really appreciate it.
I don’t know exactly how the MM works in the tanked Playlists but the last 2 days a play slayer only vs Champions and Onxy players as a Platin player.
Obviously not many casual players left in a 6 year old game, so you’ll be up against players who are very experienced… There will be a luring curve.
I’d suggest watching a streamer for a little while, study the meta… So you don’t go around spraying an assault rifle while 3 guys are melting you.
Maybe even watch a couple of YouTube vids by Shyway, he explains movement and map breakdowns.
Jump in and prepare to suck, maybe you’ll get a nasty message or 2 for sucking if you’re really lucky! Lol.
Then you’ll figure it out and improve, there is a high skill ceiling in H5, but there should be plenty of ordinary players to match with so you’ll be right.
H5 should be the best way to practice for infinite, plus it’s an excellent multiplayer game well worth playing anyway, I personally think it’s easily the best Halo multipliyer to date.
It’s only sweats left. Jumping in now with no experience with the game is basically asking to volunteer to be someone’s punching bag. Even in the comp you will be getting paired against people ranked much higher than you due to the low population. Lower ranks are populated by high ranking players on new accounts trying to play against new players. Even in social it’s populated by sweats, and premade teams.
Not only that, but maps are poorly balanced along with weapons. The “pro-team” ruined the weapon sandbox as feedback was mostly accepted exclusively from them. Anything they didn’t like playing against was nerfed right into the ground in the name of E-sports. There’s req variants of weapons and vehicles on various maps which throw balance right out the window. There’s maps where the spawns are so bad they function as a firing squad spawn trap BY INTENTIONAL DESIGN. Yes, there is a map where you spawn with no shields with no cover in front of the entire enemy team.
I strongly recommend avoiding multiplayer, and sticking exclusively to Firefight, Customs, Forge. Everything else is not worth your time even in the slightest.
I would recommend going into forge. Play around with the tools and check out maps members make. A good website for this is ForgeHub.
Play warzone FF if you’re a noob. You won’t have to worry about sweaty try hards.
yes you will still find games in halo 5, but if you want to play quietly I advise you to play in warzone mode.
Yes! It’s never too late to get into Halo. I’m a new player as well and got H5 about a month ago and am currently SR-65 and have about 40% of the REQs unlocked. I’ve mainly been playing Mythic Warzone Firefight bc it gives u loads of XP & REQ Points. H5 is kinda complicated so u may want to watch a YouTube vid explaining things like the REQ System, and Warzone.
Lucky to find this thread, I was thinking of starting Halo 5 as well but more interested in the PVE side (firefight/warzone)
Don’t want to detract from the topic but if anyone has any advice or links to be prepared for it I’d appreciate it

Probably start out in normal warzone FF, not mythic. Do mythic FF once you have some stronger reqs (tanks, wraiths, etc)
I started playing earlier in the year. I haven’t played online in a while but I loved it.
I mean people still Smurf in this game so I don’t see why not
I got Halo 5 this past year to play the story before Infinite, but I also ended up playing some of the Warzone mode – It was fun and felt well-populated
