Seems like grabbing the big yellow cylinders on certain maps ends up being a bad idea. Does that give up too much early map control? Should I instead only go for supplies (blue)?

Usually if you’re fast teching bule is better so you can buy your second gen sooner
And yellow if you’re going for map control so you upgraded a harvesters right away without delaying your upgraded gen after that is built.
It can also be map dependent, some maps are better for fast teching and others for map control.

Thanks for the perspective and advice. I generally go after the supplies and then get resources.
It would be bad not to go for the energy capsule the same with the resource capsules. I’d just grab as much as you can what you have your opponent doesn’t and every extra supply is going to help later on.
I grab the blue next to my base while making my third marine. When he pops out, I go for the nearest node before capturing more supplies. Having the node right away pays off more than collecting the yellow on the map, especially in team games. After I get the node, I go collect what is close by, but I don’t usually scatter all over the map, I go for nodes and mini bases. I am no expert, but it seems to work pretty well for me… then again I only use Cutter, so its a decent opener for me.

I fast tech by going gen first then the rest supplies, using the energy on the field to help tech up. If I get enough I can get tech 2 as fast as a double gen but with much more blue for pumping T2 vehicles/air. I only tend to do that in teams though.
