For a brand-new player to RTS, is this game suitable? A friend and I just had two of the most lopsided games I’ve ever seen in the history of gaming (we were erased from existence). Both games were 20 minutes, and the second game in particular was brutal. It’s one thing to lose in such a way, but what really made it concerning were the ranks of the opposing players (43 and 62 vs our 2 and 6). Perhaps there’s just no data yet with which to matchmake, but given our levels/ranks alone, wouldn’t this help to somewhat alleviate the barrier of entry?
I mean, does this game have a future for new players? Or, is this game dead? AND: am I better off playing StarCraft 2? This question might exist elsewhere, and if so, please point me to the proper forum.
I guess ultimately I’m just looking to understand the viability of two brand-new players who’d like to play and better themselves at the game without getting annihilated every match. Of course we want to improve so we’re good, but the first impression is quite alarming in the worst ways.
On a different note I really wish this game’s mp was free to play. That would surely help something.
UPDATE:
I’m the OP’s 2v2 partner. Almost as an experiment, we decided to Recycle/Throw the remaining 8 placement matches we had. At the end we were Bronze 5. We then signed up for two matches just to see what kind of ranks we got paired with. One was a Rank 43 and 81. Wtf??? We’re Rank 6, Bronze as hale, and never played this game until 3 days ago.
Best tips make snipers and flamers. If banished make hero and choppers. Also make turrets for the base.
The game doesnt seem dead to me.

Thanks for the reply. I have learned much over even the past couple of days, but do you have any other general advice?
Also, when you matchmake, do you typically play against opponents around your skill level?

I haven’t done matchmaking in a while, but I remember it being all over the board as far as level and rank. Mostly I’ve been sticking to Terminus Firefight when I play. I think I like the co-op better than the pvp.

The numbers 43 and 62 have nothing to do with the skill based matchmaking. Its really just an indicator of how long they have played the game.
Matchmaking uses your CSR medal which is fueled by a hidden MMR (at placement). If you are brand new and having a hard time, use the VS AI playlist.

Man, it just seems like at that level, you’d be fairly good–but you have a point. Thanks for the reply.

I’ve heard Firefight is fun. Thanks for the reply.

Your profile picture is ridiculous, btw. Fitting.
check out r/halowars. the post pinned by the moderators has a comprehensive game-guide for every leader, with specific suggestions for what buildings to build and in what order. also, watch some prominent halo wars youtubers play. team respawn and breaking the clutch are both good youtube channels. halo wars is the kind of game where I sucked up until around rank 50 when i finally decided to do research online about what works best. i think youll also find that playing 1v1 games will develop your understanding of the game quicker than playing 2v2 games. because there are less variables in a game between just two people, it’s easier to tell what worked and what didn’t work, and how exactly they beat you. it gets kind of muddled in a 2v2. best of luck i hope you keep playing. it only took like a week or so of playing before my friend who was new at the game got better. it is like a J curve
This thread alone has me re-downloading this game now (I have Game Pass). I never tried online play. Looking to get my butt handed to me, but should be a good time

I always tell myself when it comes to losing: it’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it. Lol, best of luck mate.
Numbered ranks (1-99) don’t matter, you’ll end up seeing alot of high ranks with low skill levels.
I wouldn’t consider this game dead either, it’s just 343i doesn’t care about it anymore. There are alot of issues surrounding the game on both PC/Console. Some of which affect gameplay (early disconnects, game crashes). All in all I’d say it’s still worth playing, I still play often.

Yo, thanks for the reply.
Tonight we had not one, but TWO victories! They were against newer players… but still. The game is actually really quite quaint. I hope Xbox/343 can give this game a polish sometime. Put it on Steam for Pete’s sake! It seems the greatest enemy to this game is the population–we need more.
I was a hardcore Halo Wars 2 player when it came out, lost interest, and now I come back every so often and get obsessed again. I play 1v1 primarily, and I’ve found most opponents to be around my skill level. I’ve been rolled a few times, and rolled some other players, but overall I think the population seems healthy enough. The longest I’ve waited for a match is ~5 minutes, and that’s been pretty rare.
Update:
My doubles partner and I have now played a few ranked games, and we’ve won TWO. Both games we played opponents around our skill level, and we generally handled things well, due to our AI training diligence.
We’ve also won two(?) unranked games of 3v3 with another friend.
The game’s a blast. Thanks to all who’ve contributed to this thread.
