Is Halo too competitive/hardcore?

Hey Guys,

now that we are rolling towards the end of the tech preview, i wanted to know what you guys think.

Is Halo too competitive to be successful with casual gamers?

Is Halo a niche game?

Let me hear your thoughts.

Halo is and more likely always will be a niche game. Infinite looks like it is taking steps in the right direction with the weapon academy and bot slayer which would give new players a place to get the hang of Halo and who the weapons and game play works. Sadly games with high learning curves and/or games that are tough just don’t get popular.

A few features have been implemented for Halo Infinite to be more welcoming, but it is far from being too casual. It looks actually like the skill gap will be higher than ever.

On the topic of competitive to me halo has always had both competitive and casual multiplayer. But I do enjoy that in the Halo infinite beta on the Xbox that the bots arn’t push overs

No such thing as casual game, get a high ranking player into a social match watch them dominate, which in turn will upset people. This is why ranked play is so important, sure people will smurf, but they have to keep making accounts at least making it more annoying for the smurfer.

No I agree I like that there is ranked gamplay but somtime when I get off an 10 hour shift at work Id like some casual gameplay as I belive most people with live outside of video games would agree. Note I to enjoy playing ranked and working hard to get better at it.

My question to you - which would you prefer?

Playing in a silver league (for example) and playing other silvers or playing social play list with anyone in there and a champion player destroying everyone and everything.

I think once launch comes it will iron itself out. I think this game is made extremely well for casuals and competitive okay. I can’t even imagine what the first Halo Infinite eSport game will look like. I think the bigger talking point is how PC players blatantly have an advantage with the soft aim assist on controller.

Something about aiming in the flight felt like they’re trying to compromise as much as they can with crossplay support and in result can be seen as being rough and compromising to casual play, it’s hard to pinpoint the problem without knowing what mechanics are in place behind the scenes but it sure feels a lot harder to land shots with a controller than in prior entries to the Halo series, it took some getting used to for me and I eventually somewhat got the hang of it, but still, casual could do with some more catering and love.

The only thing that worries me is Trueskill2 as that system makes it so your rank is pretty consistent across all playlists.

I might play a lot of Ranked, but when I play social it’s either for a warm up, to mess around or admittedly to remind myself I’m not the worst player in the world after I’ve lost 5 in a row and barely scraped evens trying my absolute heart out.

Now this may be a product of low population but every Halo 5 social game I play is against multiple onyx or high diamond level players. Especially as I might be playing this as a warm up, my first game of the day is usually brutal. I’m playing warm people, who are trying their hearts out. Which I don’t disagree with, put me in 4v4 social and I’m going to try to win too. Although I’m not going to transfer all my ranked skills, I’m not going to time weapons or power ups, I’m not going to hit all my shots and I’m generally going to try out things I wouldn’t in ranked games such as risky jumps, farming bad weapon kills etc etc. It’s what I used to do in Halo 3, but feels impossible in Halo 5.

Now we have a solution, I can just warm up on bots great. That won’t stop me playing people using advanced strategies though.

However this does also mean if there is a playlist that I don’t want to take seriously it becomes less of an option as the game already believes I will and that I will put in a high level player performance.

This is the same for any player really as if you play at a certain level, the game expects you to always be that level whether it’s your first game or 20th of the day.

Halo 5 bent over backwards in every little aspect to appeal to the competitive side pushing aside whatever got in the way regardless of the consequences. Competitive has its place in Halo, but it should never have become the sole focus. Some of us boot up the game to just have fun, not everyone is here to sweat out every single game.

Prior to Halo 5 I think the competitive side was neglected, but 343i swung way too far in one direction. In regards to Halo Infinite I really can’t tell where they intend to land. Numerous things point to it following in the footsteps of Halo 5 where appealing to sweats is the exclusive focus, while other things point in the other. I can’t really tell with the tech preview, but Halo 5 was absolutely too competitive, even social was ruined.
