Is Halo heading towards Open World?

This topic has been bouncing around in my thoughts, since the launch of Halo 5. Will the campaign of Halo 6 (or perhaps a spin off title set after Halo 5) be more open in the player’s ability to progress through the story? Halo 5’s campaign seemed to give a hint of that during the missions Meridian Station, Alliance, and Before the Storm. These missions put the player and co in locations in which they are able to voluntarily communicate with NPCs, something that has never been in Halo before. Players can go around and speak to almost every NPC (whether it be triggered through a press of a button or by nearing in proximity) and listen to a variety of content. The Meridian minor may lament about the UNSC lack of presence in the outer worlds, or the elite may make a snide remark about your strength and honor. It felt so unusual in a Halo game, but at the same time I really enjoyed the idea of being able to talk to NPCs and explore these places. The ending of Halo 5 also gives me the feeling that it’s sequel will take place in a Universe at war with you know who and their army (No spoilers).

This seems like a similar setup that Mass Effect 3 had, in which Commander Shepard is uniting everyone against the threat of the reapers by traveling across the Galaxy and recruiting help. It seems quite plausible to a see a game in which the Chief does the same by exploring the Infinity (instead of the Citadel) to talk to key figures like Lasky, Palmer, and Halsey discussing what to do next, then having the Chief disembark in his own ship (instead of the Normandy) for Missions (or Main Quest scenarios). Players in the set-up would be free to explore the infinity and possibly pick up miscellaneous quests or missions to embark upon.

Destiny or Borderlands are probably the closest FPSs that best exemplify what this possible open world game might seem like. Speaking purely in the structure of these games’ campaigns Halo could follow a similar Open World approach. Anyone else see this as a possibility or impossibility?

i found ODST to be basically a mini open-world game, and it worked perfectly, as it’s my favourite halo campaign to date.
however, i don’t think it would be completely idea for a main game, as usually an open world game comes at a detriment to the story telling and the story itself as you can see with destiny and other fps open world games, it could be great for a spinoff odst type thing, but i don’t think i’d like it to be in a main game

It did seem like Halo 5 was bit open-world, which I really like, because it seemed like you could really just sit back and listen to what the NPC’s have to say. Like on Sanghelios, when you can talk to some of the Elites, and all of the intel you can collect while being there is pretty cool. If anything, 343 might add a bit more of that in the coming games, but you never know.

I hope to see Halo become more open world

Open world might make the Canon a bit harder to determine, but in the case of Mass Effect 3 it’s fairly linear while at the same time giving the player some opportunity to explore as well.

I completely agree! ODST had the setting and free roaming that legitimately made an impact like no other! I want nothing more than another game JUST like that just larger and still in the Halo universe. HOWEVER, Sierra 117 or Locke just don’t really seem to be the characters to do so.
