Is Halo 5 worth it?

I’ve been debating whether I should get Halo 5 or not, so I have been researching a lot on the game. I’m seeing a lot of negative reception due to micro transactions, loot boxes, and a short story mode, but also a lot of praise on the gameplay and multiplayer. So right now I’m kinda 50/50. What do y’all recommend?

I would suggest playing MCC instead. As I mentioned in another thread, I would have suggested Halo 5 a few years ago for sure, but the core MP modes are not fun anymore since 343i did their final Overtime Update where they tuned the weapons and made the sandbox feel totally off. Since then, they have also reduced the variety of playlists available to play. For me, all that left only 2 or 3 modes that were enjoyable, whereas I would sample everything regularly and enjoy it all prior to the update.

Microtransactions and loot boxes are very prevalent in Warzone and for nearly all cosmetics, so definitely don’t expect any meaningful armor rewards unless you go for a very small subset of armor unlocks. However, loot boxes and microtransactions do not affect anything in Arena (BTB, Infection, etc.).

Campaign is fairly fun, with beautiful environments (seriously, they are stunning), but the narrative is simply bland and poorly written. Depending on how you play, campaign is not as much fun as before either due to the aforementioned Overtime Update. Overall, don’t expect it to be nearly as memorable as prior campaigns.

I personally really enjoy Halo 5’s multiplayer and game play so I recommend you play it before infinite releases, because most likely there will be some aspects from Halo 5 in Infinite and you can always use the game pass as a trial if you don’t want to purchase the game.

What are you MOST interested in?
Campaign or MP. Would you say it’s equal?

The game must be cheap right now, and if you have gamepass (can usually get it for $1 for first month) it’s free on there.

The campaign left out some important connecting information between H4 and H5. The gameplay itself is quite fun. The levels are great.
Unfortunately the story wasn’t the greatest, and jumping between squads wasn’t ideal.
Your friendly AI is also terrible.

My least favorite campaign of all the Halos - but not TERRIBLE.

The MP is actually quite fun and balanced. Unfortunately, it is dying out now. The game has a lot of advanced movements abilities which add a lot of different ways to play.
Some old-school players don’t like it, but taken on it’s own it’s quite good.
If you want to experience it - do it now. Once infinite comes out, it’s gonna be a ghost town.

Generally, if you consider yourself a big Halo fan - you should try it out now, before Infinite comes.

I’d only recommend it for custom games, forge, and campaign. If you’re interested in multiplayer go for MCC instead as Halo 5’s multiplayer is the weakest in the series so far, unless you enjoy incredibly sweaty matches on every playlist even outside ranked. Regardless of what people say about the campaign it’s still enjoyable to play.

Really depends on how you feel about the new spartan abilities. I’m a big fan of them. A lot of games have tried to tackle crazy movement in fps. Call of duty mainly. But halo 5 has a very balanced and visceral take on it. The map selection has gotten a little stale for me as a lot of the maps dont even appear in match making anymore. Also there are no vehicles in 4v4. Something I truely miss because they created mini objectives in halo 4v4 games of yore. Especially team slayer. But the combat is the best I’ve seen from the franchise in my opinion. The boost which gives you a burst of speed in any direction you choose all but eliminates the need for fuel wielding. As it enables you to completely close the gap instantaneously into cqb territory. It’s all a matter of preference but the game is easily found on ebay and pawn shops pretty cheap

The campaign was just OK, but the multiplayer has definitely been one of my favorite video game experiences of all time. After all the tuning, new forge maps and all that stuff it’s not exactly the same as it used to but I have played it recently and it’s still great IMO.

Get MCC first, as that gives you a lot more content than 5 imo. Halo 5 is fun every now and then, but yes the story was short and I don’t like most of the new mechanics (only every now and then I’ll enjoy it, but I still prefer to sticking to more classic mechanics with sprint only).
The loot boxes and MTs are awful, but they can be mostly avoided by playing arena more than Warzone. Warzone’s system depends on you having REQ cards to use, and it takes a while to earn enough for a gold pack which gives you much better stuff than the silver or bronze.

My last disappointment was the customization like armor, announcers, and assassinations are locked behind the random loot boxes. The good thing is that the custom games and social events are really fun sometimes.

It’s really up to you… you could just get both and experience everything before the multiplayer numbers dwindle when Infinite comes.

That’s almost the EXACT opposite of what I’ve heard most people say.
the multiplayer is probably one of the best iterations, yes MCC has more refined iterations, but halo 5 is only their second game, and it has more unique multiplayer, I prefer halo 5 because the updated movement mechanics make the game more fluid, in MY opinion. in halo 1-3, if you get caught in a fight unprepared, you better have those call of duty sensitivities ready, or a wall right next to you, but in halo 5, the thrust gives you a bit extra time.
anyway, that’s my take, have fun with choosing, I’ve played both, and i don’t care which you pick, they’re just games, and everyone has their preferences
