I have played Halo 1-4 plus Reach and ODST. I have heard some say that it is hard to understand the plot of Halo 5 without supplementary material like the books. Would you say this is true?
I haven’t gotten around to 5 yet, ive been playing all the Halo games in preparation for Infinite, currently up to Midnight in Halo 4.
But from what ive seen, i think you do have to read some of the books to understand the plot. I would still play the campaign though, and if there are any parts you don’t understand, look them up on Halo Alpha or Halopedia.
I can tell you honestly, I’ve played all the main installment games, as well as halo wars 1. I’ve read all the books up through the forerunner trilogy, and I’ve seen most the movies. I have a pretty good grasp on things, and even I didn’t fully get it. But I would also say it’s not inaccessible if you don’t know all the backstory, it’s that the more backstory you know the more depth it’s story has. You could pick up 5 having never heard of halo before and get what’s happening, but the more backstory you know the more it fleshes out the who’s & how’s & why’s.
I just stared playing the campaign and yeah, it’s understandable without needing to read the books
yes and no, the issue is that 343 assume that everyone knows all the books and they put characters like if you already know them like you know master chief, and I think the game lack of some necesary introductions, but the main plot is understable
to a degree you might grasp the story

H5 is understandable without supplementary materials, you can play that campaign normally. But don’t expect a good history 'cause H5 has a terrible campaing.
The story is very lackluster and has no context to a wider galaxy of halo.
The Master missing Cortana seem like a unless and not needed part but that’s me, my flawed view of a supersoilder stem for a hardcore prepective of military fanboying. The mystery of this vs that requires backstory the motivation of the for the plot is very subpar pretty much Saturday morning cartoon trying to be edgey.
The whole spartan locke angle feel like a poorly executed plot design you play it but it will come off very MEH in the end.
The levels are pretty and very tone deaf you land on a glassed planet from the first time in the series and it feels like grey volcano world 22 variant.
A top secret ship that builds ship ran by ONI has bland ran through lacked secrets and I felt was a poor way to introduce BLUE Team.
In all play it but you’re going to find it hard to engage if your looking for that Halo feel im a very tolerant person and your going to patients.
Even playing the earlier games it’s pretty confusing as much if not most of the games premise is more related to the books, comics, movies and just about everything else except the games. Even then there are a lot of moments that just seem to happen without proper explanation. If you have Ultimate and can play it for free I’d still recommend playing it just to get your own perspective on it.
You can definitely gather an understanding of it, but doesn’t really make sense, you need to read the books for it to make total sense. IMHO
