I dont think so and teen rating proves it.There is no blood,no cursing,no one important dies and enemies are presented dumb and funny.I am so tired of fighting Covenant in like 10th Halo game over and over again. They look more like some comedians now then someone who killed billions of humans.
It’s not even close to dark… as it said it was going to be…
I had to argue with my parents for about a year to get it, because it’s a 16 in Europe, I think it’s like a Teen rating or something in america, something like 13+. It really sucks, there is nothing disturbing in this game. If you don’t believe me Forge > Create Object > Props > Timmy the Space Whale. I rest my case.
Hah, nah. Hell Halo 4 was darker than 5.
I was so hyped for darker Halo games and then this.Disney is making darker movies than this.
The beta was pretty dark, but now spartans glow so it got changed.
Okay jokes aside, well, I think that there were re writes at some point. Halo 5’s story felt like it was supposed to be more then we got.
On a few occasions they said it was supposed to be the most ambitious Halo yet, however… all we really saw as ambitious was 60 fps, but that screwed with a bunch of other things so I really don’t count that.
It was also said to be the story of master chief finally getting weighed down by his past, and lost friends : johnson, keyes, his halo 3 armor, Cortana… you get it, but instead they dropped that ball and gave him 3 people to follow him around, hence he dosn’t need to do any talying for himself because they do all the talking for him.
Halo 5 is odd to me, I don’t know what happened to it. We have some leeks, but no conformation.
No it wasn’t dark at all really and there was also supposed to be a “hunt”… well when you know where some one is and even why they are going there that is not a hunt.
Agreed. I get why it’s SUPPOSED to feel dark - by the end of the game the galaxy has been taken over by a new regime, things are oppressive, etc. - but it just did not feel that way. The atmosphere was just not there. Reach felt way darker. And I hate to quibble over the rating but as you said OP, part of it is simply the lack of violence they can put in if they insist on pushing it to T so they can sell it to a younger audience. Reach hit home when you get to New Alexandria and see the Brutes beating civilians to death with a puddle of blood left behind.
Wasn’t very dark no, but it being a teen rating literally means nothing as there are kid stories that are very dark. Seriously, why does everyone target the rating being the issue, the issue is 343s writers and execution, upping the rating to mature doesn’t make their writers any better.
When you think about it Halo 5 has the most deaths and destruction out of the entire series, the issue is that we as the player never see the Guardians do anything remotely catastrophic.
Cortana’s betrayal and Chief going AWOL could be considered dark but both were poorly executed to the point where we don’t even think of the dark implications because we are so confused on how the plot deviated so off course.
The Prometheans no longer seem to have the fear factor they had in Halo 4 and the Covenant have lost all sense of being considered an actual threat as they now act as simple cannon fodder.
The themes of Halo 5 imply that it should be the darkest Halo but because of the way the enemy’s present themselves and because we never see anything worthy of being considered dark we cant say it is when in comparison to something like Halo Reach where we civilians being killed left and right in most levels.
Halo 5 should have shown city’s being destroyed, ships crashing into planets, wide spread Promethean attacks and conflicting beliefs and loyalties on Blue and Osiris teams.
A teen rating doesn’t really effect the series in my opinion, apart from the Flood Halo has always looked toyish weapon and vehicle wise up until Reach and it was only really the blood and language which warranted anything above teen.
What we might consider dark for a game nowadays is the norm for teens growing up today.

Halo 4 may have been the darkest Halo save for Reach. Chief slowly watching and dealing with Cortana going rampant, essentially dying before his eyes. Del Rio tries to have Chief arrested. THIS happens. All of New Phoenix gets composed. Cortana does die (as far as he knows). It’s pretty dark for a game without the Flood … or Noble Team taking a dirt nap.
No. Not even darker than Halo Reach and if Hunt the Truth was actually there in the campaign, I think the game will almost be dark or maybe surpass Halo Reach.
Nope. That’s what happens when Microsoft Suits who don’t really have any interest in Halo other than the money it makes think they know how to make others make a Halo game.
The darkest game is actually ODST. How? Sadies Story.
You have a Police Commissioner chasing a teenage girl through a city turned warzone, shooting civilians, just so he can sexually abuse her and using her father as a hostage who he then kills (accident or not) who is then violently beaten and ripped to death by an angry mob.
no, i mean there are hints of it, mostly because of the idea of mass genocide, but it does not have the impact it needed to have to be considered dark in any way
Not a chance… we’re fighting robots with our intergalactic multi-colored Power Ranger suits… and the Teen rating says it all.
It’s a good thing that the gameplay is so good…
well considering cortana is gathering titanic machines that “police” planets and the whole do what i say or face extinction its more than possible
It didn’t feel dark. I even had a thread asking the same question quite a while back. Most said it wasn’t.
Nope. Chief wise nothing happened. The game was more of a follow the clues to find chief in locke’s perspective.
It’s dark in the way that it put halo’s record of great storytelling in a dark place.

Yeeeeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh, but hold off on all that until we get a good replacement. The Promethean segments in Halo 4 and 5 are not nearly as good or fun as fighting the Covenant (if you ask me). They got a lot better in Halo 5, but still no replacement. That dialog in the mission “Blue Team” where either Linda or Kelly says it’ll be strange not fighting them after all these years, well the thought of that was doin me a heck of a frighten. Imaging a game of just Prometheans and Flood. That’d be a nightmare.
And those food nipple lovin’, methane fart breathing, “brute stinky bad, bad” saying, pink needle pew pew gun shootin’ Grunts were never scary. Ever. In the books, maybe. They ripped people apart with their claws … which is weird that Halo 5 was the first game to give them a melee attack … but that’s besides the point. They’ve always been comedians. Brutes yelling “He was my lover!” and all the silly Elite dialog in Halo 3; trading weapons and them saying “didn’t I give this to you for Christmas?” or something like that. That was sorely missed in Reach and Halo 4 (although I still think the little Grunt squeals in Halo 4 were cute. Reach, not so much). Halo 5 brought that back. Don’t knock that.
