I just wanted to get other spartains opinions on spartain ops. Ive recently been grinding through all 10 episodes on solo legendary. I’ve made it to episode 5 and every time I load up a new one, I struggle to keep interest. 50 chapters of super repetitive play is making it feel like a chore now, and I’ve played the regular campaign and multiplayer for years without a loss of interest. My question is, for those that have played SO eith friends, was it much more enjoyable? Thanks.
The first 5 episodes aren’t the greatest. Episode 6 is when it starts to get better.
As for playing with friends, even the most mundane tasks are made better with some buddies around. So yes, it would be better with friends (not that Spartan Ops is mundane).
I remember back when Spartan Ops episodes were released weekly. Everybody said that Episodes One and Two were lacking in story and weren’t all that interesting, but then Episode Three came out with the Firefight-like Two Giants mission, and everybody praised it. I think that was the turning point in opinion for many people.
To be honest, I don’t struggle to keep interest, but that’s because I don’t try to play through it all one go. I play a mission or two then back out and do something else and resume Spartan Ops at a later date. However, after the recent progress bug where it no longer shows you where you have got up to, I have not played it since.
It is extremely grindy and boring. Doing this Solo on Legendary in MCC really sheds light on what’s wrong with 343’s campaigns.
To be honest, it depends on what you hope to accomplish with Spartan Ops that determines whether or not it would be considered ‘grindy’. Considering that you have infinite respawns (Save two objectives from different missions that have you restart if you fail them), Just going through Legendary Solo for one runthrough depending on how you handle it can make it more so challenging (in a fun way) if you want to try to stay alive, or boring if you just run in, gun down an enemy, die, rinse and repeat. With that, it’s not grindy.
If you are playing Co-Op with friends you know, it can make Spartan Ops more fun as well, which in that is also not grindy. Now if you are trying to get the ‘No One Left Behind’ achievement, that is difficult and can be a grindfest to get if you are going about it Solo. Even with Co-Op it can be difficult and a grindfest if you don’t have proper teamwork. Also the Forerunner Destroyer and Covenant Destroyer commedations are grindy, making you play Spartan Ops over and over again in order to master these commedations, making unlocking the Orbital AEON and Vanguard Armors a grindfest to unlock.
So if you are playing Spartan Ops for Commedation or Armory completion, it will be a grindfest. However if you are doing a Legendary Runthrough Solo to get them all done for achievements sake, then one and done there for each level. If you are also playing with friends for fun, then it’s not grindy.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say 343 has horrible campaigns are horrible with the exception of halo 5. I understand that spartain ops wasn’t made with the ambitions of being a narative built story. More of just an extra way to kill covies and promethians.
That said, solo legendary spartain ops is killing me.

I believe my problem is with the way I’m running it. I’ve been trying to get it dine as quick as possible for the achievements, and part of that is blasting shields with the plasma pistol, getting a kill on a knight or elite, dying and repeating.
This isn’t so much a gripe, but more of a “how do other folks feel about it”.
Thanks for the well thought out input!
That’s what Spartan Ops is about. Fighting waves of enemies in different locations. It’s all about the grind and the enjoyment of destroying the enemies in your path. It’s similar to an arcade style beat-em-up game (like Final Fight.) However, I can totally understand why someone would find the repetitiveness unenjoyable. If you play the mode a ton, and counting the high level of missions to play, it’s understandable that you would get tired of playing it. If I remember correctly, Spartan Ops was kinda the replacement to Firefight from Halo Reach. You fight waves of enemies in different locations, but in Spartan Ops case, there’s a story to it. I don’t play Spartan Ops for the story though, even if it was supposed to be the reason to play it. I didn’t get into the story very much, but the gameplay is pretty fun for me.

Sure thing. You can also change up your loadout and try to use precision weapons more on the infantry. Here are two of my loadouts for Spartan Ops:
Primary Weapon: DMR
Secondary Weapon: Plasma Pistol
Grenade: Plasma Grenade
Armor Ability: Autosentry (This thing works well for distractions, alerting you of nearby enemies, and long distance pinging)
Tactical Package: Shielding
Support Upgrade: Dexterity
Primary Weapon: Covenant Carbine
Secondary Weapon: Plasma Pistol
Grenade: Plasma Grenade
Armor Ability: Regeneration Field
Tactical Package: AA Efficency
Support Upgrade: Ammo
And if you are feeling a bit daring as a close quarters type of Spartan against infantry:
Primary Weapon: Storm Rifle
Secondary Weapon: Boltshot
Grenade: Pulse Grenade
Armor Ability: Thruster Pack
Tactical Package: Grenadier
Support Upgrade: Either Dexterity or Explosives
Hope this helps
I was never big on the firefirght stuff so I’d say yeah. ODST’s had it’s moments though
Yeah I kinda lost interest when they first came out in 2013 and didn’t complete them all till I had a friend with me.
Hmm, not really. I always enjoy Spartan Ops, no matter how many times I play it again and again.
Maybe because I dont look at it from the POV of being super repetitive, but on the POV that shows our Spartans to be able to be part of the Halo Universe, makes your SPartan be something more than a MP avatar.
The fist couple of episodes, mainly 1-5, are not the best. Going on from there they start to get better and the story is more intriguing
I played only what was necessary in Spartan Ops for the achievements, the weekly challenges, and last week, finally getting the Raider DSTT shoulder armor. I have always found it super tedious and I’ve never bothered to download episodes 6-10 let alone play them.
Also the Sp Ops commendation levels weren’t balanced properly. Working your way through those is the essence of grinding. To advance from level 5 to 6 for Watcher Slayer requires killing 1,500, a ridiculous requirement given the frequency of that enemy.
Have to agree about 1-5 being the most boring. Up to Episode 9 now on the MCC and from 6 it starts to get interesting. I believe Spartan Ops was never designed really for solo play (its built for co-op play), as it has twice as many enemies to fight in one area, compared to campaign, which is why its not designed for 1 person! I’m almost done on the MCC with Spartan Ops and glad to be done with it a second time (did my first run through on 360 Halo 4). Legendary is just way too difficult with doing it solo and you die much faster with less cover in many places, despite there being no checkpoints, dying is still a pain though. Plus with the amount of enemies, you run out of ammo alot and alot of times you cannot replace the ammo from your loadout, without dying again (unless you choose the loadout specific to the situation ). Too many fuel rod enemies and hunters to fight yourself, which makes it less fun. Hard to pick up the power weapons (sniper rifle, rocket launcher, etc) when everything despawns so quickly after death (including enemy deaths) or getting rid of a weapon that you picked up, that it makes it kind of pointless to use the weapons only in the short term.
I thoroughly enjoyed Spartan Ops. I solo Legendary ran all of them so I could get the Raider Armor set in Halo 4 back on Xbox 360 and I enjoyed it. Plus, the Red vs Blue Easter Eggs hidden in each Chapter made it kinda worth it while running through the missions.

RvB in every chapter? As I recall there were 10, 1 per episode.

That’s what I meant, I got “Chapters” and “Episodes” mixed up.
