Is Halo 4 only two thirds of a game now?

This question is purely a matter of perspective and opinion, so I’m expecting diverse answers.

I view Halo 4 as 3 parts that come together to form a whole:

  • Campaign
  • War Games
  • Spartan Ops

(Obviously there are customs and Forge, but those things have been destroyed to the point of near-redundancy, IMO. So im not interested in discussing those in this thread.)

Now Spartan Ops has finished, is Halo 4 only two thirds of a game now?

I personally find that Spartan Ops has no real replay value and therefore isn’t something I’d keep going back to, unless maybe to get commendations.

With Firefight (the mode that Spops apparently “evolved” from), however, the replay value was immense. A wave-based survival game is incredibly fun, and whilst it is the same thing over and over again, it is still enjoyable.

I don’t know what the future of Spartan Ops is. They may release a Season 2. They may wait until Halo 5 to start another season. They may release DLC options. They might just continue with season 1 replays until this game’s life span comes to an end.

Unless they release a Season 2 or DLC, I think that Halo 4 is now only two thirds of a game (or four fifths if you count Forge and Customs).

In this sense, I would suggest that for the next Halo, to go back to a game mode like Firefight. The replay value is there and it is extremely entertaining. Of course I am reffering to ODST firefight, which felt like an actual struggle to survive, and not Reach FF, which was just a Rocket and Jetpack CR boosting fiasco.

This is just my opinion. Spops to me seems to have been a pretty sizeable short term feature which isn’t balanced out by it’s replay value. Nor it’s value in general compared to the game’s price in money and what you’re getting for that money. Again, an opinion.

I would hope to see the return of a more traditional survival wave gametype in the next installment, so we have a larger variety of replayable and entertaining game modes in Halo.

Discuss.

Matchmaking makes up for the other 1/3 that you claim Spartan Ops doesn’t have. So basically, you have campaign as your 1/3 and your matchmaking as 2/3. Of course, people who say that “Matchmaking is completely broken” will completely disagree here.

If 343 brought back a Halo3 ODST style firefight, I would start playing Halo 4-5 again, right now I’m sticking with and playing ODST all the time.

I personally thought that Halo 4 was released as 1/2 of a Halo game. (don’t get me wrong, I very much enjoy Halo 4, but the value per dollar went down IMO)

My 5 elements:
-great forge community
-co-op with high replay value
-campaign
-multiplayer

Sure Forge was there but the file share was broken for MONTHS. sites like forgehub didn’t even get running with Halo 4 until 2+ months after release. Spartan Ops had potential but 343’s failure to tie there narrative to the gameplay and constant repeats of dull environments made the mode an afterthought with 0 replay value. I have considered purchasing a used copy of Reach JUST to play some firefight because I enjoyed it that much… I stopped playing Spartan Ops after episode 7 and have NEVER played a chapter more than once.

For me it’s 1/3 since I don’t play MP.

Campaign only survives for me because of Co-op and some mildly interesting challenges:

-Midnight 6 Knights
-Infinity Holdout
-Requiem sniper Zealots
-Composer 4 Elites

Custom games and forge are still there and great at that, I have never spent so much time in forge before this. Also who says spartan ops has no replay value, I replay it all the time with friends and it is alot of fun (maybe even more then odst firefight) but seriously I don’t understand how people hate SpOps for being repetitive and then go around praising firefight like its the best thing ever, they are the same except SpOps has more variety then firefight and has a story to it making it better.

The campaign’s 8 missions are 1/3 but Spartan Ops.'s 50 aren’t?

> The campaign’s 8 missions are 1/3 but Spartan Ops.'s 50 aren’t?

when the missions are this poorly constructed… yes.

If your narrative is going to be a joke than don’t include it… I’d rather have a survival mode

note: The narrative in S Ops is actually good… but the gameplay doesn’t tie into the narrative (except for episode 7) and therefore felt more like an afterthought.

i think its getting up there.

Its 1/3rd of a game now IMO.

I agree 100% that SOPs has like zero replay appeal, while the MP… i have difficulty counting it because its a beta at best. And the little that is playable…

Put it this way, my H4 may as well be on par with my Anniversary game. There is a campaign that can be played repeatedly (though H4’s is like a 5 out of 10 compared to CE as a 10 out of 10) and somewhat of a MP …at best.

That’s it.
