This question is purely a matter of perspective and opinion, so I’m expecting diverse answers.
I view Halo 4 as 3 parts that come together to form a whole:
- Campaign
- War Games
- Spartan Ops
(Obviously there are customs and Forge, but those things have been destroyed to the point of near-redundancy, IMO. So im not interested in discussing those in this thread.)
Now Spartan Ops has finished, is Halo 4 only two thirds of a game now?
I personally find that Spartan Ops has no real replay value and therefore isn’t something I’d keep going back to, unless maybe to get commendations.
With Firefight (the mode that Spops apparently “evolved” from), however, the replay value was immense. A wave-based survival game is incredibly fun, and whilst it is the same thing over and over again, it is still enjoyable.
I don’t know what the future of Spartan Ops is. They may release a Season 2. They may wait until Halo 5 to start another season. They may release DLC options. They might just continue with season 1 replays until this game’s life span comes to an end.
Unless they release a Season 2 or DLC, I think that Halo 4 is now only two thirds of a game (or four fifths if you count Forge and Customs).
In this sense, I would suggest that for the next Halo, to go back to a game mode like Firefight. The replay value is there and it is extremely entertaining. Of course I am reffering to ODST firefight, which felt like an actual struggle to survive, and not Reach FF, which was just a Rocket and Jetpack CR boosting fiasco.
This is just my opinion. Spops to me seems to have been a pretty sizeable short term feature which isn’t balanced out by it’s replay value. Nor it’s value in general compared to the game’s price in money and what you’re getting for that money. Again, an opinion.
I would hope to see the return of a more traditional survival wave gametype in the next installment, so we have a larger variety of replayable and entertaining game modes in Halo.
Discuss.
