Is Forge too complicated?

Now before you get all wound up let me say what I have to say.

The things that the Halo 5 community is creating with the forge tool is nothing short amazing. Every map in the franchise has been redone/ reimagined. Beautiful art has been created and the overall standard of what a good forge map is has been raised to a level that I would have never imagined… The community is taking this tool and running with it and creating some of the best maps/ creations I have ever seen… *Sheds Tear

That being said, I’m not some master cartographer/ Forger But in previous halos I Dabbled a bit and created some maps that my friends and I would play on and enjoy… Heck dropping a tank on each other or riding a mongoose into a man cannon would take 10 seconds to set up… But with all of these new features and ways to perfect these maps in forge, I’ve had the toughest time being able to make my own creations or even screw around with the sandbox. Whether it is the new control scheme, or the extra safety precautions to make sure nothing is bumped or deleted… I just can’t seem to wrap my head around forge… Plus even if I did try to make something, I don’t know where to start… There are so many different walls and rocks and trees and other pieces of geometry… It is a little much to take in all at once, and I admit, I get a little intimidated and discouraged… NOT 343’s Fault

Do NOT get me wrong… This forge tool is by far the greatest thing that has happened to Halo since it was first implemented in H3… 10/10… Two thumbs Up… All im asking is what are your thoughts on them catering this tool to more “Professional” Forgers/ Cartographers… Good Thing? Bad Thing?

TL;DNR…Forge is Hard

I dont think it is too hard, just a bit buggy. But once you get the hand of it you can make some great maps! Sample

Update

I was not quite satisfied with my previous answer so decided to add to it. I was in the same mindset as yourself when I started, but I think with the complexity of Halo 5 Forge, it has turned from a “map editor” to a “map creator”. I find the definition of Forge itself has changed. With the removal of pre-made buildings and the increased amounts of props for decoration, Forgers are now challenged to devote more time and effort into making some amazing stuff, built from their imagination rather then Forge menus. On the positive side we no longer have as many “thrown together” maps with generic architecture and every map is unique in its own way. We get more Quality rather than Quantity as now we can truly give our maps the desired atmosphere. However, this change also has a negative side where casual Forgers are discouraged due to the amount of effort it takes to make something happen. Ultimately, we all benefit from Forge, as we get some creative and wild maps. I hope maybe in the future we can have both Quality and Quantity alongside a system letting us make sure we don’t miss out on those masterpieces that people spent countless hours creating.

I get how you feel. In this Forge, it’s super good and awesome but I don’t know how to do stuff. The only things I know how to do is spawn objects. :frowning: There should be another Forge for people like me. XD I was good in Halo reach Forge.

It is certainly more tricky, and I can understand the discouragement when you just wanna jump in and fool around like you did in the past and feel like you can’t figure out how to do anything. But honestly, you can do anything you did in the old forge 3 times faster in this one, once you get the controls down. I feel anyone who doesn’t want to invest a couple hours to get used to them, wasn’t going to be spending more than a few hours total in forge anyway. Even if all you ever do is drop some stuff down and goof around with the physics, it’s worth learning them. All the controls are on the screen and just mentally acknowleding “okay, everything is different, time to learn something new” makes a world of difference.

Forge is totally hard, and I can’t even come close to doing what others do. I just like building structures with it. And now I can build natural landscapes and it’s awesome. Learning the tools and the controls was so worth it!

The new controls are a very good thing.

The new controls are great.

Literally just spend 20 min lerning it and boom you can make a map. Im not a forger but i understand it enough after just toying with it. Its not that complicated, its just not intuitive.

No. I agree with you forge is way to complicated in Halo 5. Most of the time, I don’t know what I am doing anymore

I love it. It just takes time to get used to.

I consider myself an expert forger and have made several nice things in H5. I can also tell you that some of the most simple tasks in H5 Forge really are unnecessarily difficult. This happened when 343 scrambled the controls. They could have kept them exactly the same and still added all the extra cool stuff that this forge has. Certain things that used to use one button or worked automatically in the old forge now use a combination of controls to work, like just moving a block for example. Also, the lock-on a block controls were unnecessarily reversed. People say, “just adapt” to the new controls, but guess what, I’ve adapted and made some nice stuff, but as an experienced forger, I can still tell you that H5’s Forge controls really are difficult and they are difficult for no reason. I think it’s either just bone headed programming, or it was just what the programmer (who worked on the controls) thought was easier for him/her self without even batting an eye at the classic controls we were used to, which were just plain better and more user friendly in general.

Just get basic “Spawn, place, move” controls down and the rest falls into place.
