Is Cortana really Cortana?

I have read nearly every piece of Halo lore out there. Everything from canon to non- canon. One can’t help but wonder with all the times Cortana copied herself that maybe just maybe the Cortana we see in Halo 5 is actually just a copy that thinks she’s the original and that’s why her logic isn’t 100%.
Just a thought. What’s yours?

I always figured she was one of the copies from the end of Halo 4, but we will have to wait to find out

After a 3 year wait, I hope we find out soon.

That’s the implication in the comic short-story Dominion Splinter. However, we see other fragments show up in that story and Cortana lies in Halo 5, so her claim to be a fragment in that story may also be a lie.

I think it is. We see her split up a lot in the end of 4, and at reach we saw that she can have a copy capable of operating on its own. I think it is because rampancy is not only the death of a AI but the AI going crazy. So it would seem that one of those personality spikes is a crazy copy, at least how I see it.

I’m with you. I think Chief will find a “good” Cortana in Halo Infinite and the two of them will team up to defeat the Created. I genuinely hope that is not what 343 has planned, but it’s what I’m expecting.

Talk about terrible clichè writing. Wanna bet that they’ll be spewing catchphrases from the first 3 games and books just to milk the nostalgia for all its worth.

I was under the impression that the Cortana in Halo 5 is a reassembly of whatever fragments of Cortana remained following the destruction of the Mantle’s Approach. The rampant nature of the fragments and missing components would lead to a haphazardly assembled and unstable AI.

That’s highly plausible.

The fragments that were destroyed are what have me concerned. Was thinking that what if they were the more reasonable ones. Only time will tell if 343 will go down this path to say that the Cortana we see is just a copy and somehow when the Librarian had her in Halo 4 actually kept the original. I’m leaning towards the Librarian having the original still and somehow Halsey figures it out.

I really hope they don’t go down that route.

And I strongly doubt there would be any way for the Librarian to have kept some sort of copy of the original in Halo 4 because she was just a personality imprint and not really ‘real’.

Good thought. She definitely doesn’t seem like her normal self hah.

I think cortana was actually captured and replaced

I have wondered that for awhile now. Even though the Warden Eternal seems like he is being controlled, that could be a lie. I also hypotheses that maybe it’s the Wardens way to test Humanity to see if we are ready to handle the Mantle. Whatever it may turn out to be, i hope we find out soon.
