Is Communication in Battle a Thing of the Past?

I see this a lot in almost any Halo game I play, be it Halo 5: Guardians and even back in Halo Reach. What ever really happened to communicating amongst teammates? Sometimes when the enemy has a point on lockdown, or has me pinned down, or even if I try to give locations of enemies to my teammates, most of the time, they completely ignore the information. On top of that, no body seems to use a microphone anymore in multiplayer to share valuable info during a battle…and most of those with microphones have horrible TV/gameplay echo or are blaring music through them.

I like how Halo 5 added the whole “Teammates Talking” feature where sometimes an ally’s player will say something like “Enemy in Security.” or “Enemy has a sniper.” I mean…these AI callouts have been more helpful than ever since no one seems to communicate anymore.

I have even had times where me and a buddy were on the same team, communicating about enemy locations and what not and actually had other people on our team telling us to shut up just because we were talking…which all we were doing were providing helpful intel of the match. I can’t help but believe that there are several matches I have lost that could have went better if there was better communication among the team.

So what is the deal? Has communicating during a match become a thing of the past? Does no one feel the need to provide helpful information and only worry about themselves? I don’t know and I don’t understand why people don’t try to communicate more. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

In solo queue, yep.

Depends on the game mode from my experience. Anything non-ranked tends to be silent, but whenever I solo queue in Team Arena or Team Slayer I usually bump into people using their headsets. The match will start with the sound of someone breathing into their headset followed by the obligatory almost-sarcastic sounding “anyone got a mic?”

I mostly play Arena SWAT or Team SWAT depending on the Halo title (5: Guardians, Reach, etc.) and I mean, a little communication would be nice. Like if a teammate gets killed, they could give a heads up so I know where to look for an enemy or what area to avoid so I don’t find myself in the crosshairs also. Like if i die, I at least try to give them a location as to where I was shot from or how many enemies are “on my X” (where I died.). Like for real, it’s like why play in a “Team” lobby gametype if you aren’t even going to use basic teamwork skills…?

In my experience, in-game communication was never really a thing unless you specifically played with friends or a party. Back in Halo 3, I would experience people chatting as much as I did in Halo 5.

I have seemed to notice that as well. Now a days, pretty much the only way you will get much communication from them is if you are in a party with them already. Randoms don’t really talk much unless they know you…but then they wouldn’t be randoms then.

I get more people insulting each other behind the anonymous wall which is the internet then communicating in a positive manner. I guess they have to make themselves feel better by making others feel bad about themselves instead of cooperating and working together. If I play solo I prefer to just mute my mic and avoid the verbal abuse all together, even if it means loosing the match.

Couldn’t agree more. I used to use my headset 90% of the time until I got fed up of hearing heavy breathers, people’s terrible music or children (I’m hoping they were children) just making horrible sound’s down the headset. Although, I’ve made Halo friends with two lads in separate games from Scotland which is quite nice. But, it would be nice too be able to join a game and be able to communicate with your team about locations or even just a general chat. But, I don’t think the heavy breathers etc is just stuck to Halo, I think that’s the state of XBL these days.

Halo 2 and Halo 3 were very good with communication. Not always good communication, but nearly every game had someone talking. This obviously meant that during intense and high level games you could get some good communication and team work going.

The OG Xbox and 360 were great for communication. They came with Headsets and in game chat was the only way to talk to people, including your friends. The 360 even had a wireless headset which was great to put on your ear and forget about. And proximity chat was just fantastic to draw you in to the game and interact with your enemy.

Towards the end of Halo 3 MS introduced Xbox Live Parties to the 360. It made keeping in touch with friends a lot easier, it even made getting a party together a lot easier too. People could just join the party chat to see what you were doing, who’s in and to let you know they wanted to join. Sadly this meant that staying in the party chat was a much better option for a lot of people. Halo Reach had a lot of parties, but there was still a lot of people going in with mics and no party. By Halo 4 my group had just given up leaving the chat once we had partied up.

The Xbox One use to come with a mic, though plenty of versions do not anymore. And the mics they do come with are wired and break very easily. They aren’t even that comfortable. I can’t think of any games today that allow chat between teams either.

The whole landscape of current gen MP gaming (despite all the decent options to chat) is very poor. It doesn’t promote the use of chat very well. We need MS and Devs to step up their game here and;

  • Start allowing proxy chat. We have much better options for banning and muting players than we did with the original Xbox, and even the 360. We don’t need to be protected from the other team. - Launch a new wireless mic. Comfortable, durable, and very useable. It’s nearly 2017 and we are wired up to our pads. When 343i said that Halo 2A would “be just a as we remember from 2004”, I didn’t think they meant the uncomfortable headset. - Allow an option that bridges the gap between game and party chat. I know there is an option to switch to game chat without leaving the party, and that’s a great step in the right direction over the 360, but there needs to be a controller option, or a tick box option for the party. We need to give players an easier option to keep them in game without forcing them to come away from their party or requiring the entire party to keep opening the menus and switching between the two states. With of course an opt out option for those who want to avoid in game chat altogether.

What’s this teamwork with randoms you talk about? Never heard of it you must be delusional

My buddies and I communicate all the time…

Nope, you have the constant rage guy repetitively cursing how horrible and unfair the game plays, criticizing their teammates skill, and blaming them for losing…

and he has a negative K/D

Depends on the level you play. It seems once you go below Platinum, you get all the kids and idiots.

It’s cause you play SWAT

Pushing up on the d-pad will send out an audible ping and flash a symbol beside your tag on the map. This can be used to communicate with teammates.

People for what ever reason seem to communicate more on expanded than any other setting. I can’t remember the last time I heard any one on my team with a mic it’s maybe been about a week or so.

All I ever hear is bad music and some cases of possible domestic abuse

It is true that communication has seen a major dip in frequency, but it’s not dead. People still talk from time to time.

However, some people (myself included) may not have a mic due to having a broken one / not having one at all.

I need to get a mic before the rest of my Company returns for the Holiday season.

my games are mostly me talking to myself trying to get others to talk lol

I don’t just play SWAT. I also play Warzone as well (If it’s Halo 5) and I still don’t see anyone using a mic/communicating.
