I invited a friend to play who is unfamiliar with Halo but is familiar with shooters, and BTB was kind of rough. We were at the mercy of enemy power weapons getting sniped barely out of spawn and overall it was a less than stellar experience (as someone who really loves BTB in Halo 3 in MCC). I can’t put my finger on it but I wonder if the 12v12 is more hurtful than helpful for BTB, but I may be thinking about this wrong.
We immediately switched over to 4v4 Arena and it was a much more forgiving experience. I think the limit of power weapons in Arena allowed my buddy more breathing room to learn the overall gameplay loop, weapons, etc. It seems kind of ironic, but 4v4 Arena felt less sweaty than BTB. In the big picture, I wonder how players new to Halo will feel about this since this was my buddy’s experience jumping into Halo. It just seems opposite to what I expected, I thought BTB would be a bit more casual experience but the power weapon balance might be off, I’m not sure.
Anyone else experienced this? Or has anyone invited a friend to play who was newer to Halo, and if so how was their experience?

That’s a good point about the demographic being skewed due to this being more for Halo fans. I still can’t help to feel though that you can get picked off too easily in BTB, whether if it is because of too many precision / power weapons spawning on the map, vehicle gameplay, or starting weapons being effective at longer ranges / having a faster TTK than OG Halo.
I mean its halo plenty of OG players like myself have been playing for 20years halo has always been pretty tough game and like the previous person said the beta attracts allot of halo veterans
As a veteran Halo player, this game has a strange learning curve. Day one of the flight I was being melted like butter constantly. At this point I feel I have broken that wall and play well enough now where it feels fun. There are a lot of balance and control issues that need to be fixed to allow new and old blood to shine in this game.
It is a sweaty game. But it feels ten times worse until you adapt.
Everyone’s pretty new to the maps, spawns, power weapon locations etc, so it’s normal to be absolutely hamstrung by some other player who has put in the effort to memorize the locations.
Don’t sweat it, focus on experimenting and having fun first and foremost.
Getting matched against groups has a been a problem for years and 343 still won’t fix it. That’s a big reason why searching alone or with just 1 other person usually doesn’t work out very well.
I think one of the big issues is the 12v12 as you said. 12v12 as a concept is a really cool idea but in practice, on the BTB map we have access too, it’s tough. The map is about the same size as Halo 3 Valhalla or maybe a bit larger and that map back in it’s day felt full with 16 players. This just feels way too crowded with 24. I think we need some larger maps if we’re going to properly be able to experience 12v12 games in a fun setting.
A game is only as sweaty as you make it. I had a slayer game today where we lost by almost 50 points. I didn’t even notice how bad we were losing because I was just having a good time and learning the new map, weapons, and vehicles.
