I’ve been trying to figure out our reporter friend Ben. I cling to his every word being that it’s the latest halo news you can find. But is Ben a bad guy or a good guy. Is he here to honestly search the truth or make it look as if he is searching the truth to gain his next pay check and keep a contract?
Considering that he is uncovering the dirty secrets of the Spartan program, undermining the apparent coverup by ONI, I don’t see how he is working with ONI.
Why did ONI hire someone to do this investigation? For propaganda? Why didn’t ONI just print an elaborate story themselves? That way ONI would have a story they see fit and there would be no risk of someone seeing or hearing things they weren’t suppose to.

Because Benjamin Giraud is a well-known war journalist in public relations and has worked with the Office of Naval Intelligence previously.
Using his introduction (Halo: Graphic Novel - Second Sunrise Over New Mombassa) as a standard for his characterization and personality, I’d hypothesize that Benjamin Giraud is not rustically good or evil, he is simply concerned about his own well-being and has a certain morality complex. Ben however does state, he is an artist in his work, which, gives some justifiable evidence about why he is so curious about the truth behind John-117 and the constant misinformation he is being given, between the Office of Naval Intelligence and his personal sources.
I believe in the end Benjamin will learn the truth about the Master Chief. However he will deem that publicly this is indigestible, and create the “submissive” heroic story originally planned… yet he will break all ties with the Office of Naval Intelligence, partially loathing himself for even working with them.
