I haven’t seen this many people going crazy over armor since Halo 3, but something about this isn’t quite justified. I understand 343 wants to reclaim the lost players by adding incentive, because let’s face it. EVERYBODY wanted Recon because it was rare and Bungie had it, it drove players to play and find some way to unlock it even before Halo 3: ODST.
But 343 is setting this up wrong. Don’t misunderstand me, I think Achilles looks awesome, and I’m trying my best to do everything I can to help my Spartan Company, but Recon had years of excitement and hype. Not even the Haunted Pilot Helmet from Halo: Reach came close to Recon, because the atmosphere wasn’t there. It took a few months of constant playing, but Recon took us YEARS to achieve.
What do you guys think? Is 343 trying to reintroduce a Recon situation?
I do not, I think they are trying to get to the fan base that wanted armor that you had to earn and not just get lucky or shove money at the screen. This is there way to do it and it is also a good way to get Spartan Companies into a better light.

Well it’s more of a “try hard tw*ts who spawn camp” armour now.

Actually, no. I wanted Recon because it looked cool to me. True, it’s rarity was an appealing factor. But many people out there value what they think themselves, over what others think of them.

No. Not a Recon situation. But similar. Recon was a badge. A merit. It was a personal thing to the developers.
Achilles is available to anyone who meets a set criteria. Same with the Haunted Pilot. It was available to anyone who achieved it’s criteria of unlock.
No, it’s just a no-job armor. A real armor challenge would be to beat the game on LASO or beat the last level in 15 mins, etc blah blah

I actually like the Achilies Helmet, I do not know about the chest but the helmet looks neat.

The main reason Recon was well loved in Halo 3 was due to the fact that before Halo 3: ODST it was a Bungie only armour set. Only Bungie employees or selected players had Recon, making it the rarest armour in game, to the point where people (this including myself here) stopped in the middle of a match to admire someone wearing the armour. When Halo 3: ODST came out with the vidmaster challanges (they really need to return, i loved doing these) to allow us to unlock Recon, the community lost there -Yoink- and did everything they could to get it ASAP.
In terms of the Achilles, i don’t think it is like Recon. The only reason it is hyped atm is due to no one having it, its a race to see which Spartan Company will obtain the full set first. But unlike Recon where you had tricky acheivments, Achilles is just playing the waiting game with the commendations. As soon as a Spartan Company gets the full set, the hype will die down.
Can you only get Achilles from the Spartan Company commendations or is it possible to find it in a Gold REQ pack?
I think it’s their way of trying to make Spartan Companies relevant. I do think it is good incentive and they should start doing this with a few other armor pieces. Like solo commendation armor.

I think they should have added more specific armor unlocks (and others) from maxing out certain commendation instead of all the randomness involved with the REQ packs.

Currently, it is only available through Spartan Company Kill Commendations.
No.
To get Recon, you either had to beat the Bungie team during the Bungie day playlist, or you had to complete all Vidmaster challenges which took quite a bit of skill to complete.
Achilles.
Well, just play warzone and spawn camp players in their base rather than destroying the core.
I say yes because I have 1/2 of it

Your spartan company isn’t fairing too well in the eyes of the community as of right now, just a heads up.
Awesome post. I remember the Recon frenzy. And while it is similar in some aspects, it’s not quite the same thing. Yes, a bunch of people want it, but the underlying goal of having the Spartan Company commendation challenges is to specifically get people to get people away from lone-wolfing it and into socializing with other players to team up.
Every playlist in Halo history, aside from free-for-all is team-based. Slayer, CTF, bomb, stronghold, breakout, and even infection are all based around team play and team effectiveness. There have been numerous complaint threads of people without mics and those that generally won’t communicate. Finding a group of 50-100 people solves a ton of that. It also introduces you to other people you normally may not have friended before this armor challenge arose. And really, that challenge is just one of being simplified as: “work as a big team to achieve something together.”
I’d like to see more armors you gotta earn instead of just being lucky. Completely the campaign on legendary by yourself, get all personal commendations for examples. Agree? Disagree? More examples?
Well, Achilles and Recon are certainly comparable, at least the old Recon because now you can get if only if you’re lucky.
One day they will soon release some event where you will have a flame head…
