Invalidating casual gamers...

…why? I see this attitude everywhere on these forums. Why do hardcore gamers constantly make it a point to try and invalidate people who game casually as if there’s some shame in it? As if they’re unimportant and shouldn’t be paid attention to? Of course, I’m not saying all who identify as hardcore have this attitude, but I see it often enough that it’s really starting to get to me. Just… why?

Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle of casual and hardcore, so I have a difficult time understanding. Please, discuss. And no flame wars please–I’d prefer legitimate reasons as to why this is such a big deal.

I see it as a dominance thing, there will always be a struggle to be the king of the hill, even if that hill is a pile of poop.

Because the game has been catered to them to play halo for a week then black ops 2 comes out and they all go back to COD and we are stuck with a game that doesnt fit our style of play

I have no idea what you are trying to say…

I don’t even know where I stand anymore honestly. I don’t play in tournaments (use to) and I don’t get paid to play. But on the other hand, I do play a lot. And I also really strive to win. But if I don’t win, I don’t cry about it. I just get ready for the next game =]

So what am I? A semi-casual?

343 bring in COD stuffs to get COD players but then they leave when new COD comes out and Halo players are left to pick up the pieces… better?

I too am one of those-semi casuals. What I think is that Halo 4 should build upon Reach’s psych system. It’s a good idea to have one. If players truthfully (and I’m sure most will) place themselves as competitive or casual, and it sorts us out, people can play with who they want. I would probably head to competitive.

But yes, casual players are a large part of the fanbase and should not be ignored. What’s wrong with playing Halo for fun? Not everything’s about winning.

People should stop using the word casual referring to non dedicated players or non competitive players

Wait, are you saying that 343 brought in CoD elements (first of all that is taken entirely out of context; they enhance gameplay in Halo, not convert it to CoD), but players will go play Black Ops 2 instead after it comes out? You don’t know our community. I dare you to praise CoD on these forums.

See, I’ve never played COD so I wouldn’t know about that. I’ve always stuck with Halo.

The thing is, even though I play Halo all the time (literally every chance I get, if I’m able) I play it for the experience more than the competition. I adore the campaign, I love co-op, matchmaking, everything that Halo is… I just don’t play it to win, or to get the highest rank, or whatever else there is to achieve. Shouldn’t the fact that I love the game be enough to count me as a “true Halo player,” if there even is such a thing?

I think part of the issue is that I don’t really understand what constitutes a casual or hardcore gamer. Frankly, as DropzofCrimzon suggested, I think we should just abandon those terms altogether. Though at this point that may just be wishful thinking.

Why does it go the other way? More often than not I see casual players putting down and shaming hardcore/competitive players just because of their playstyle.

Because 343i is catering to the casuals by turning Halo 4 into a full-blown CoD clone.

I’m probably in your boat too.

The term is highly subjective and variable anyway. You can be a competitive casual and a casual competitor.

However, on this forum, it’s clear what “casual” means: “Stupid children who shouldn’t have any say in what goes on in the game and allow the “true” players to handle asking 343 for stuff, since casuals are too dumb to know what’s good for them and hardcore people aren’t”

And why are Call of Duty traits inherently bad? If you really believe 343i did this to only bring in the Call of Duty players, then that is laughable.

annnnnnnddddd here we go… >_>

Not in my eyes they made this game into a bad love child of halo and COD bungie is prolly laughing their -Yoinks!- off right now

Oh, I don’t doubt it swings both ways. Everything does. It’s just that more often I see hardcores putting down casuals, and that’s what sparked these thoughts in my head.

> Because 343i is catering to the casuals by turning Halo 4 into a full-blown CoD clone.

Then what are they supposed to do, just pretend like they don’t exist? Casual or not, they’re valuable consumers who will make 343i the money they need to continue as a company. And I will gladly challenge the contention that Halo 4 is a clone of COD–everything draws influence from something sooner or later.

Oh hey, look at how freaking beautiful and insightful my thread has become. Apparently no one decided to listen when I said I don’t want flame wars to break out. -_-

Hey did you know HALO DOESNT NEED KILL CAMS AND WEAPON LOADOUTS SPRINTS PERKS PROGRESSION RANKS LMAO all COD mechs

wait what? hardcore players, people who are dedicated passionate fans of a franchise don’t invalidate the casual gamers, people who play for a bit to escape from reality and don’t treat it as serious buisness… i’ve yet to see this even happen.
