I know its too late for halo 4 but this is just conjecture on how vehicle health could be approached. Most people were ok with the idea of vehicle health in Reach so far as I know but I know a few werent ok with being able to blow up vehicles using weapons like the DMR.
Been thinking for a while and I think a cool feature could be added that all weapons do damage to vehicle health but only explosives could blow up a vehicle killing the driver.
Non explosives i think should take a different approach. When a vehicle has taken too much damage and non explosives push it into critical/death the vehicle should shut down, minor explosions going through its frame to show that the internal systems have been compromised. The minor explosions would do little or no damage to the driver depending on what you guys would want really. After that though the vehicle would shut down like power was cut and you wouldnt be able to drive it anymore. Main cannons like a tank turret or driver operated guns would also be shut down but something like a secondary turret like a warthog gunner or tank turret would still be able to turn and shoot. You would just be dead in the water basically so you would want to abandon the vehicle before they chuck grenades at you and blow you up. Obviously this would still be bad news for pilots but hell thats gravity for you. Any thoughts?
I like it, sounds a lot like how vehicles work in Battlefield 3 and I think it handles it pretty well. But it would be nice if there was a way the player can see if a vehicle is disabled from a quick glance.
> I like it, sounds a lot like how vehicles work in Battlefield 3 and I think it handles it pretty well. But it would be nice if there was a way the player can see if a vehicle is disabled from a quick glance.
Well besides being heavily damaged how about a permanent look of being EMP’d? You know, static electricity running along the frame while the vehicle is disabled but not blown up.
> Obviously this would still be bad news for pilots but hell thats gravity for you.
I lol’d so hard when I thought if I was caught in that scenario. I could work with it. But I feel it should come back online after a while, maybe after like 10 or 15 seconds, that would give the attacker enough time to take out the driver or blow up the vehicle with explosives. That way there isn’t just random vehicles cluttering the map.

Yes this is the part that would be trickiest and up to speculation on how to solve it. What you said might work not sure, if it would work i think you nailed how much time it would have to take. Either way the vehicle would have to eventually despawn, forcing players to get out before hand i would think, or maybe we could take these mini explosions farther and have them a be a slow self destruct like feature. Long enough to give everyone time to either escape the enemy or get killed by them but short enough that the vehicle would blow up, despawn, and get recycled in a reasonable time. So many possibilities
I think they should give all the vehicles a vulnerable spot, where regular rounds could do some damage. Kind of like the ghost in halo 2/3 (and reach I think) but more so. Make it so that regular rounds will only do damage if they hit that particular area of the vehicle. And make a vehicle health gauge on the HUD for all the occupants of the vehicle. The damage sustainability could be like this:
We’ll use the damage of DMR rounds to make things simple.
Mongoose - 5 rounds, small gas tank under the seat
Ghost - 10 rounds, how it is currently designed, but on both sides of the ghost.
Warthog - 15 rounds, possibly the hood of the vehicle?
Tank/Wraith - 30 rounds, to the rear
Just some suggestions. If you have any better set-ups, please share them!
Oh, and no vehicle regeneration please!

I think they shoud definitely do more damage to these spots, possibly with explosive results for a kill shot to these spots. I think shots to other areas should do some damage too just not as much and depending on the vehicle even less depending on the armor of where you hit it. Obviously tanks are heavily armored in some spots so shooting those spots should be largely ineffective, just like shooting a hunter from the front.
Also what are your guys’ thoughts on the reach sniper vs vehicles and how would it factor into this proposed health system? Personally Im undecided on if I like the effectiveness of the sniper, especially against vehicles like the tank. I was ok with how effective it was vs banshee but i think i kind of just hate the steroid reach banshee not sure.

The sniper should really damage the vehicle that much.
Very nice idea, similar to the vehicle health system in Battlefield 3, where after taking 50% damage, it gradually weakens and explodes.
I just want vehicles to be like how they were in Halo 3, mixed with their vulnerability and handling in Halo 2.

I dont understand why the health of a machine should be determined by the health of the driver. by that logic a vehicle could take an infinite amount of hits from rockets so long as the driver wasnt killed by any of them. We shall agree to disagree

There is already a weak spot for the Scorpion, and that’s in the treads or canopy. But I would also like to see weak spots for other vehicles (although ghosts/mongooses are weak enough already, you can shred them in 1 clip), preferably on the warthog and revi. Btw, does anyone know if there will be elephants in the game?
Reach actually has weakness areas on the vehicles. There’s a thread on here somewhere of someone making an excellent vehicle gametype where you needed to strike those weak areas directly for full effect.
Other then that, sounds like the real problem is the DMR!
Frankly, I think they should nerf the melee damage. Punching a tank 3 times to make it explode is stupid and makes the whole grenade trick redundant.

There’s nothing more fun than headshot bonuses. These weakspots would do the same thing: encourage proper aiming.
Marines in campaign like to shoot at the Wraith’s wings when they should be aiming at it’s weak spot or at the pilot cockpit.

Pathetic vehicles like the Wraith and Prowler need the H3/H2 vehicle health system or they’re just big targets.

Prowler? Guess You mean revenant. Those vehicles are far from pathetic if you use them right. I like the idea of encouraging better aiming, those shots should do the most damage and other shots should do little damage at all.
i’ve actually destroyed a warthog and Falcon in one shot from a sniper before, I have ABSOLUTELY no idea how it happened, but im betting i hit the fuel tank for both of these vehicles because they were fresh vehicles.

That would kind of be awesome. You sir are a badass

thanks, but i am 100% sure it was luck, i tried to hit the driver of the warthog and missed, and the falcon was more or less intentional, i fired once and was about to shoot the second time when it went off like an M80.
thanks for the compliment tho
You are welcome, still awesome to have it happen to you
