Will there be interactive cutscenes in Halo 5:Guardians?
I thought they were ok in H4, but got stale fast. Lots of crawling. I think a good interactive cutscene needs to be difficult and rewarding enough that the player might sometimes fail, but I just don’t see much room for that in a Halo game. It would have been more rewarding for me to actually kill/melee the sword elite in the first level of H4 than to have a cutscene do it for me after a series of easy-to press buttons.
What is the general consensus? Can they work in Halo? If so, what will help them feel more fluid/epic?
I could do without them. Let the cutscene be a cutscene. Let gameplay be gameplay. Jumping up that elevator shaft was tedious.
Even worse than the elevator shaft was the final conflict with the didact. I would have much rather witnesses something cool in a cutscene rather than repeatedly tapping X in the first person view.
Interactive cutscenes are a cancerous addition to gaming and need to be excised pronto. Influential games like Halo certainly shouldn’t be using them. If it can’t be done as a standard piece of gameplay with default controls, either make it into a regular cutscene or take it out.
