Been experiencing some input lag that really puts my aiming off on certain maps and it’s weird because it happens after a few minutes of the game. Get it hard on regret and truth after a few minutes and some of the forge maps, but does anyone know what the cause is? It feels like I’m dragging the reticle around the screen, it’s just not fluid at all. It’s very strange, I don’t notice it much on MCC. Does anyone else notice it? I’m wondering if its my wireless controller or my monitor. I’m thinking it could be my monitor just being old. I got it back probably in 2008/9, but it’s a great monitor (Viewsonic, 2ms response time, 1080p) that was recommended on the MLG forums (I only say this because people who played MLG usually needed to have the best possible monitors, no input lag at all.
Anyone know what this could be from? I’m really running out of options. My only guess is that the Xbox One, with it’s new hardware and architecture is just out of my monitors league as the monitor is 7 years old and might not run as well or be able to handle the new hardware.
Make sure you disable any kind of 120hz extrapolation on your monitor. It shouldn’t be too old though, my LG is from the same time & 5ms and I don’t have any delay.
Weird that it only happens after a few minutes though… I hope you don’t have your xbox inside a cabinet or something?
Remember they are computers & should be handled with the same care. Up on a shelf, not the floor, in an open area, not closed, that stays cool, not warm, and doesn’t have much dust (avoid carpets & pets). If you keep them in a closed-off shelf or on some kind or on a carpeted area, they will all eventually do what you are describing.
No I just got Xbox like a month ago and it’s fine, but here’s the weird thing, this was happening back on Halo 3 on foundry, I always thought it was just due to the heavy forge. And also my monitor has nothing else, there’s nowhere to change the hz, it just takes the input from the Xbox.
If you plug in the USB for the controller, you can atleast rule that out as the issue. I don’t think it’s the Monitor, but could possibly be the HDMI cable if it’s causing slight freezes. You could try alternate Display or HDMI cable to rule those out. Otherwise, could just be the XBox is freezing up slightly from performance issues or overheating.

See I’m not so sure about plugging in a charge + play adapter, because I’m pretty sure it still communicates wirelessly with the xbox, it just uses the USB to charge, it still sends data wirelessly. I also doubt it’s the cable because it’s new, it came with the xbox. I wish I had another monitor, I only have a TV and when I plug it into that, well I get input lag on every map which is to be expected, it’s a big TV that’s not meant for games.
I can confirm that connecting your controller to an xbox via even a normal usb is not communicating wirelessly. The most notable thing is my audio from my headphones stop cutting out.
Yeah well what keeps from me thinking it’s the wireless controller is the fact that it happens only one some maps. Why would it only happen on some maps, doesn’t make much sense.
Use the plug and play cable. I experience lag from this when not using it. It doesn’t always happen but when it does it is a substantial amount of input lag.
I also experience lag on certain servers. At first I thought it was the maps but after playing with people that live in my sector of the country the aiming lag was gone with every game I played with them. This lag is much less noticeable but enough to make it feel like aiming a 50 foot rubber pole under water.
So I figured I’d update this thread instead of making a new one. Got the USB plug and play and still have the same issue when it’s plugged in. I’m really wondering what it could be because it’s only on certain maps, and it happens after a couple minutes. It has to be the monitor right? It’s not the TV, I’m sure it’s not the Xbox or the HDMI cord, because it’s only on certain maps. The aiming on MCC is how it should be.
The only thing I can think of is that the monitor is not able to handle some maps for whatever reason.
Considering its certain maps, it sounds like a local xbox one issue. I would suggest deleting the Halo 5 app and reinstalling it, or even reformatting the entire xbone.

The forge made maps seems funky sometimes, they take longer to load.
I don’t know broher. The aiming fluctuates between really solid and really crappy. It feels laggy. U move it and it takes a ms to respond. Or it’s slower than u think it is. Or it’s “choppy” or it’s like moving it underwater. Either way, I really hope this isn’t a 343 problem. It may not be, but I would love it if they would delve deeper into this aiming “underwater” or laggy and choppy feeling. Happens to me all the time. Except one night, where my aim was literally God like. U don’t understand the flunctuations 343. Please help.
Check your USB charge and play cable. I had similar issues including button commands not working when I was hitting them fast. Even a small break in the wire cores or bad contact in connectors is enough to cause problems. This has happened to me many times using cheap thin gauge USB cables (like those that come with cell phone chargers) and was fixed with the use of a new cable. Problem was with cheap thin cables, if you pull out the cable from the xbox or controller not using the plug or stretch the cord accidentally (i.e. tug on the wire) it can screw things up. Bought myself a good heavy 15 foot USB 2.0 cable with 28/24 AWG wire and have had no issues since—no lag and response is quick. Check amazon.com for them, they are only about $7-8.
OP i hope this finds you well.
I can confirm that for whatever reason, connection lag in Halo 5 translates to input/controller lag. When I play on wired Internet it’s fine - it doesn’t matter if I play on my TV or monitor. But when I have to use my phones LTE Hotspot (don’t ask why), I get insane Input Lag sometimes. When I play campaign, it works as it should.
I can play Blops 3 on my Hotspot and ping 50-70 consistently and play like im wired in… But in Halo 5 it’s like I get no -Yoink- 200ms input lag
Not to speak for the OP or anything but i know exactly what he’s talking about. it’s not the deadzones, i tried every config imaginable and sometimes it just feels like you’re dragging a knife through peanut butter.
For whatever silly reason, this game makes your camera controls sloppy if your connection isn’t perfect.
Does it happen in solo campaign too? (This will rule out connection issues, as in Halo 5 many things become sluggish on a high latency connection, although aiming shouldn’t as it’s completely client based (but frame dependent).
If you’re sweet in campaign do some network troubleshooting, if it happens in solo campaign it’s most likely a hardware issue, try a wired controller, try display cables and see if any setting have changed on the monitor (make sure you turn off ALL image processing settings and have screen mode set to ‘default’ (not game mode or movie mode).
