On the mission “Midnight” when you’re going through the “trench run”, you hear the reports stating that MAC rounds are ineffective. When the Chief disables the Didact’s defensive weapons, it gives Infinity a clear shot with what APPEARS to be the only weapon in the UNSC arsenal capable of damaging Forerunner technology from the outside. What is this strange, new weapon? And why don’t we know more about it? It seems like it would be an awesome device to equipped more ships with in the future assuming they would be capable of harnessing such a powerful device.
I’ve been calling Ion Cannons
well infinity has forruner tech. its not a far stretch to assume the weapons system could be forruner based.

Herp derp i double posted!

Then we definitely have something interesting afoot! What is this AWESOME new weapon?
The giant Railgun Canon? Or what is this new one?
Reminds me of the Normandy’s Thannix cannon.
Remember in the novel First Strike how Cortana basically turns the Ascendant Justice’s plasma torpedoes into superpowered death beams by just changing the settings? I’m thinking it’s a high powered plasma laser thingy based off of that data.

I remember that it was stated the Infinity incorporated both Forerunner and Covenant tech, so you might be on to something. Covenant weapons are also the only weaponry shown to seriously damage Forerunner construction (remember how the Scarab blasted open the doors of the control room in Halo 2?).

Wouldnt a giant railgun just be a Magnetic acceleration cannon (mac)?
Lol, I think they are just mac rounds and the animation team just made them look weird, and that have now “become effective” because chief blew up a bunch of stuff on the ship. The infinity’s armaments were posted in a bulletin a few months back and I don’t recall seeing any major beam weapons above maybe point-defense lasers.

I think MAC and Rialgun are slightly different.

And to answer your question, no. One is a coil gun the other is literally a “rail” gun. They both use magnetism to accelerate projectiles but in different ways and as such have different advantages/disadvantages.

Good point!
Someone mentioned “hard light” cannons at some point, but I’m not sure how that would really work…
I also found it odd that they chose not to use those cannons against the Didact’s Cryptum (assuming that it was facing the right direction of course).
Maybe it’s light controlled magnetic fields that power a super rail gun.
It’s obviously a tornado gun.
> Maybe it’s light controlled magnetic fields that power a super rail gun.
I like this idea. A combination of everything? Taking the best from each.
I found this on the Halo wiki.
“The Infinity’s primary armament is four CR-08, Series-8 Mass Accelerator Cannon. Infinity boasts a significant missile network that can be implemented for ship-to-ship combat, anti-air defense and orbital gunfire support for Marine forces. Placed throughout the ship are 1100 missile pods of three types: Archer, Rapier, and Howler, totaling the ship’s missile payload at 25900 missiles. Close-in defense against enemy missiles, fighters, and boarding craft is provided by the ship’s M965 Fortress point defense system, a network of 830 70mm automatic cannons. It also had a number of Mark 2488 Magnetic Accelerator Cannon’s on the top of the ship”
Dual Super MAC cannons, or normal MAC canons. They will look like beams when they fire, see the gauss hog’s railgun.

Something’s off then.
