Infinity v. Classic slayer

I think we’ve all seen both sides of this argument. “There are fans of infinity, too! Why take away what we like?” “Classic is the reason people like halo. Without it, we lost the population!”

Here’s my take on it.

It seems to me that the only large groups of people that are left are the people that like Infinity settings and the people that are in the competitive type of community. There doesn’t seem to be much of an in-between.

Personally, I’m a classic slayer guy. However, the only playlists that really support classic slayer, though, are Legendary Slayer, Slayer Pro, and Team Throwdown. (not counting snipers/swat/any specialized playlists)

I don’t like Slayer Pro because 75% of the time or more, I’ll play infinity instead. I don’t like Legendary Slayer because I hate using the AR. I want to have a BR-BR fight, not a “hold down the trigger and see who gets lucky” battle. I can’t ever win in Throwdown without a team, and even then, I usually get stomped because the people in that playlist are way better than I am.

I don’t think Infinity should be taken away, but I also don’t think it should be the main focus of the game. Many complaints from a lot of people who left were that the game just wasn’t fun because it was really hard to improve when it’s going so unexpected, like walking around the corner to a boltshot, or hiding behind a box to recharge shields and have someone jetpacking up to get them, or coming up some stairs to someone camping with a sword that wasn’t on the map to begin with.

Keep it in the game, but if you want the population to come back, make just a general “Team Slayer” playlist with BR starts, no AAs, with radar, and maps like Haven, Simplex, Abandon, Adrift, Dispatch, and others of that size/type.

No matter what settings you use, there will always be players who dislike them. However, add an AR secondary and I’m pretty sure you’ve got a gametype that will provide the greatest amount of fun for the greatest amount of players.

I agree that there’s a place for Infinity, but it should be segregated into its own playlist, like SWAT, Snipers, or Grifball, not injected into every existing gametype. I feel that Infinity settings are basically a reduced version of Fiesta, which is only in one playlist.

I try not to be negative when talking about Infinity. However I really dont see how people like it. And then you have those that defend Infinity with weird population arguments that ignore massive population decline and the fact its an attempt to force popular gameplay trends on Halo fans. The main reasons I never liked COD/BF3 are now in Halo.

Legendary isnt classic IMO. There are no power ups and no secondary. Legendary is weak which makes me think 343 doesnt understand.

Have you tried this playlist? Or are you swearing off it because of the no BR starts?

I have had quite a few BR battles, and focus on picking up the other precision weapons as soon as I can.

I have also witnessed a few games where there are only AR’s sounding off, but I have had some exciting games in this playlist. Not having to deal with camo campers and Jetpacks is refreshing.

It’s not the most ideal, mostly because of the incessant quitting, but I think I’m going to be sticking with this playlist for some time. I just hope that more players will too.

Maybe if you tried burst firing you wouldn’t have that problem. ARs can engage at almost BR range if you know how to use 'em.

It’s doable, but not a viable option. You’re better off picking up a weapon that can get headshots.

I like infinity slayer better because along with needing to be good at all the traditional aspects of halo like map control and accurate shooting, one must also be smart and skilled at selecting the best loadout options, using AAs well, picking the best ordnace for the situation, and adapting to opponents gear as well. It takes by far the most skill of any gametype.

I’m really enjoying Legendary Slayer. Tbh I think AR starts are great. It forces you think about the decisions you make because of its limitations in terms of range and how it compares to medium/long range weapons, but at the same time it isn’t a bad weapon at all. Map control and weapon control seem all the more relevant in this gametype. Maps such as shutout work amazingly well with these settings. It feels like classic halo which is great.

Infinity Slayer is enjoyable as well because of its chaotic feel. However, after a while, infinity slayer can get really boring fast. Games of infinity slayer revolve around the individual – teamwork doesn’t seem to play a role at all. It’s also frustrating to be constantly killed by an ordinance-drop-railgun or a bolt shot. Active camo and jet pack are also pretty annoying.

I think throwdown settings are probably the best but a lot of casual players are intimidated by the skill of the players in that playlist. Going into throwdown by yourself can be incredibly frustrating.

P.S. Dispatch is awful.

I’m sure there are things pretty much everyone hates, regardless of what side they are on, that could be removed in Halo 5, such as personal ordnance and jetpacks.

Fixing Infinity Slayer is the least risky way to make Halo 5 that still produces results.

That would suck if ordnance and jetpacks were removed in halo 5 from IS.
