Infinite's new engine

So 343i said they were using Dynamic Lighting in the new engine for the gameplay demo, but considering how long the game was delayed, could they have completely reworked the game engine?? Because I think maybe up until halo 4, I’m probably wrong, they used precalculated lighting and shadows, and put it into the texture on static surfaces, and so since they’re using dynamic lighting, which has the shadows paradox thingy, and also possibly slower render time, could they have changed the lighting source to SSAO or something. I don’t think they wanna use raytracing because only the series x and I think s have it, and not all PC players have graphics card with raytracing. I think they should at least try to use SSAO to solve their demo problems, because its either that, or they completely reworked the textures to prerender lighting and shadows onto them. I also don’t know how much of the art I liked, most of it was good, but I just hate the shield look, it completely takes up your screen, its probably also taking up resources unnecessarily. Anybody have any thoughts on what they’re gonna use to fix the lighting and shadow problems??

not in a year no. An engine rework is too demanding. Really its more about improving various systems within the engine, not redoing the engine itself

I’m sure the new engine has been built with upgrades in mind.

As Microsoft add new API’s to take advantage of the Xbox Series X then hopefully it will be (relatively) easy for 343 to use these inside Slipspace.

The main example would be ray tracing… which will improve markedly over the next few years as everyone gets the hang of what the new consoles can (and can’t) do.

I wouldn’t really call SSAO a lighting model, its more like an additive feature.

Similarly just because you have raytracting doesn’t mean you can’t have non-raytracting options for older hardware or those without cards. Most games that support ray-tracing have non-rtx modes.

Heck, World of Wacraft right now has SSAO and Raytracting at the same time as options, and the game definitely isn’t considered the cutting edge.

Read the Inside Infinite blog update from December 2020, most of the stuff you talked about was already addressed

I’m not well versed in how lighting works but you should read the December update if you haven’t. I don’t know if they answer your questions in there but I know they do talk about lighting to some extent on there.
