Got XBSX for the Xmas. Made some adjustments to the monitor tonight and now I’m playing at 120fps in 4k. Yikes that is a bit sweaty for me. The movement of my player is so fast I keep over reacting with my inputs. I guess I’ll get used to it, unless I barf first. Wowsa! Is this what all you mad skilz gamerz like to see in your games?
Technically we can’t even see at 120fps, but you can manually change your monitor settings, probably. Idk about XBSX, but your monitor might have settings for 60fps. Alternatively set the in-game settings to max 60fps
Yeah I think it was on 60 by default and then I found the VRR setting and it allowed the rate to jump up to 120. It’s probably fine, but I’ll need to adjust. The Dolby Vision is deactivated on the HDMI input for the console when VRR is on so I have to decide if I want that back. The colors do seem more muted with the VRR setup.
120fps and higher is awesome, it should be industry standard, unfortunately many people are still happy playing at 30/60, i just can’t do it anymore, it seems like a slideshow
you’ll get used to 120 then you’ll never want to go back to 30/60
That’s what scares me. I got a new TV recently and I could activate 120Hz but I’m afraid it would permanently ruin me for other games…
that’s why in 2020 i built a pc instead of going with xbox series x or ps5. Consoles are too focused on low frame rates and 4k. 1440p 144/165hz is the sweet spot for me, it works perfectly
I suggest you try 120hz mode anyway, it will make the game more enjoable
Not sure how Sony TV’s are, I don’t care too much for them but make sure all image processing is turned off. If it has a “Filmmaker Mode”, enable that as it turns off all post processing.
Also, you’re not getting 4k @ 120fps. Halo runs in dynamic resolution targeting 1440p and will dip as low as 720p to maintain (try to) 120fps.
I prefer 200fps+, I for one can tell the difference between 120 and 240. 60 to 120 is very noticeable.
Does anyone know what the HCS tournaments have, 120 or 60? Cuz all the pro gamers have PCs. I don’t think the series X can run 4k at 120fps. It won’t work on mine and states that something has to give with higher frame rate. Maybe I will upgrade my game system to a PC next
Mine X does it with the Sony TV. I’m able to use VRR at 4k (3840 x 2160p) 120fps with my Sony TV. Only works on specfic HDMI inputs and with special settings enabled in the TV menus.
I think I’m getting the full Monty. At 120 the motion of my player is faster and more responsive. The textures and details on everything is better than 60fps. It definitely has not dropped the resolution. I only play Fiesta, not campaign and from what I read that can make a difference. That suprised me, but I’m seeing what I’m seeing. These settings do require turning off Dolby Vision so the colors changed - more muted.
The problem is your TV is lying to you. The Xbox is probably upscaling the output signal regardless of the actual resolution being rendered.
It’s definitely not rendering a solid 4K resolution at 120Hz.
That’s not how it works. Your TV is showing 3840x2160 because that’s what you have your Xbox’s resolution set to. That doesn’t mean the game is running in that resolution. It’s already been tested and confirmed that Halo @ 120fps is using dynamic resolution targeting 1440p and will drop to 720p, averages around 1188p and @ 60fps is also uses dynamic resolution averaging 1800p.
Welcome to console gaming.
Sounds like placebo to me. Running Halo at 120fps on console both the resolution and graphic settings are turned down compared to running at 60fps.
I’m pretty sure they have their frame rate locked at 120, which enables DRS. As far as their graphic settings go, I have no idea. Most likely something similar to the settings I optimized because I believe my graphic settings could be considered eSports like, or maybe all low settings.
Or maybe they’re forced to run ultra settings so it promotes the game as well, I don’t really know.
I like playing at 120 vs 60 or 30. I know what you’re saying about your eyes getting goofy for a while. After a while you get used to it. I disabled a lot of effects and speed lines and that junk so there was just less going on in the screen. It does actually seem smoother especially for melee. I don’t know what it is but it close fast moving situations it just seems less glitchy and less wild flailing around as you seem to be able to track better. I could be full of it though. it has been stated that graphics do decrease at a higher fps which I can’t really tell because they are good anyways but there is definitely a difference from 30. The biggest thing that may be relevant to your setup and you eyes besides just getting used to it is your distance from the screen. Sounds simple but there’s definitely a sweet spot. Too close and things look jerky and hard to focus on and too far away you get kinda disconnected and can’t really get immersed in the game. I did find that playing on a 75” makes it easy to see enemies especially for long range BtB games and your reticle is about the size of a quarter but you have to sit at least 10ft back or maybe a touch more It would be interesting to play on a pro setup and see if game play would actually improve due to just setup seeing as most pros are using similar equipment
When I was younger, I always thought bigger was better so I always bought big TV’s. Then I really got into home audio and video and discovered PPI, and I also discovered projectors. I still prefer to watch movies and shows on my projector, and some local co-op and single player games but I mainly game on my monitor.
There’s really no “standard” how far or how close to sit to your display depending on the size of it but, THX has their recommendations which a lot of home theater enthusiasts don’t agree with. For an example, THX list a viewing distance (from your eye balls) of 12-14 feet from a 120" screen, 10-12’ for 100" and 8-10’ for 80". From my 135" screen to the back of my seating is 12.5’.

The actual numbers are irrelevant to me. The look and feel matters and it looks and feels better with the devices set to 4k and 120fps.
Nobody is trying to convince you not to use your current settings. They have many advantages, especially for competitive play. Just trying to make sure that people have an accurate idea of what is actually happening so they can make their own informed decision.
I was trying to teach you something, but they should be relevant to you. This is how assuming, rumors and misinformation starts.
People tend to be overly obsessed with display spec numbers, when their eyes are the best way to assess quality. I’m not a gamer, I’m a just player. The convenience, ease of use and low cost of consoles appeal to me. If I were competitive or a gaming PC hobbyist I would be paying more attention to the specs and technical performance numbers. I used to work in video post production, particularly during the transition from standard def to HD, which was difficult. I’m kindof done with going down the rabbit hole of compulsively studying every minute detail of of frame rates, resolution, refresh, VRR, ppi etc. etc. Mostly I’m just hapy to have better experience by making a simple upgrade.
I appreciate you explaining some of the details. More info is always better.
