Infinite will likely be a soft reboot

With the announcement trailer of Halo Infinite, the community noticed immediately the art style going back to the classic games. Since the announcement, 343 has given little bits and tidbits of info on the game. Frankie has said this,

> It will continue the story from Halo 5: Guardians but will be built in a way that makes it a good place to start your first halo adventure.

> It will take place after the events of Halo 5 but feel new to new players. Remember how Halo CE woke you up in the middle of a war you had apparently been fighting?

During the streams, members of the team have said that of all the classics games they’re taking inspiration from, Combat Evolved is the biggest. This game will indeed be a sequel to Halo 5. However, I believe it’s seeming more and more likely that Halo Infinite will be a sort of reset, or soft reboot of the series. Yes, it’s a continuation and a sequel, but the game will feel like a fresh start. Examples of soft reboots include The Force Awakens and Jurassic World; yes they’re follow-ups, but they’re also essentially redoing the story of the original and serving as a way to allowing new viewers/gamers to join the franchise. I believe that Infinite will have a fairly simple story like CE and a narrative very similar. I think the Infinity will arrive at Installation 07, forces are scattered across the ring, Chief and forces fight back, there’s some terrible secret on the ring (though I don’t think the Flood will be in the game). Over the past 3 years, there hasn’t been much development with the Created across the various media. I believe that the Created will be defeated by the end of the game, or possibly they might pull a Jul 'Mdama and kill them off fairly early in the game to move onto a new threat. What do you think; with the small info we have, do you think Infinite is looking more and more like a soft reboot, and if so do you like that?

I think it’s a tough call to make right now, with the lack of details we have about everything. There are so many things to consider when going into Halo Infinite it really makes my head spin thinking about it: Evil Cortana, The Arbiter and his fellow elites, Master Chief, Dr. Halsey, Locke and Fireteam Osiris, Chief and Blue Team, the Prometheans, The Flood, The Covenant, the lack of Covenant leadership, the Banished and the fact that they are a viable threat to the UNSC and Covenant.

Honestly, I have no idea how they are going to make a story simple and accessible to new players with all that goes on in the Halo universe. I’m not saying that they need to consider every character and ever faction of the franchise in Infinite, it’s just that they need to have it all make sense, which will be a monumental task.

Imo, they’re just gonna keep the Banished out of Infinite, which sucks because I’d be much more entertained fighting them than the Covenant at this point. The Covenant at this point in Halo just seem like old news and the Banished seem far superior with their motives of truth seeking and influence on used and abused covenant armies, and their leadership, Atriox, Pavium, Voridus, Shipmaster, and Colony, seem far more organized and threatening to the UNSC than the leadership of the Covenant. As much as I disliked Halo 2, there was at least some face of the covenant that I was actually fighting against (the prophets and Tartarus) In Halo 5, I feel like I’m just killing aliens who have no leadership, no reason to fight. Like who are they fighting for? What is their cause? Where in the heck are their bosses? lol
Sure, the answers are out there, but shouldn’t it have been made clear to me if I spent the time playing through the campaign?

It’s good to see Frankie saying those words and I hope Halo Infinite’s plot is accessible to newcomers. I tried to introduce someone to Halo when Halo 4 was the newest game and let me tell you something, Halo 4 is not the best game for a newcomer to start Halo with, if that person wants to understand the storyline without looking to outside media or using the Halo wiki…

This is also true. I’m not sure how they could do it, even if they wanted to. But I hope they at least try.

There will probably be some retconning to make the story in H:I make sense

Another point in favour of this is new leadership. Chris has replaced Josh, this is his Halo now. When you take over a franchise you want to make it your own and prove to everyone you can do it the best.
