I wasn’t a fan with most of the menu systems.
For battlepass/challenges, I never felt like I properly got the hang of the menus, they’re rather clumsy and it can be a bit of a pain to figure out how to get to the right pages due to the links between them being rather obtuse. I always felt like I was just stumbling around until I got to where I was trying to go.
The customization menus are far too bulky and I can foresee a nightmare trying to scroll through all the options to get to where I want, especially in a year or so when I’ll probably have dozens of different coatings. The icons could stand to be smaller, with perhaps 3 or so rows, like the Halo 5 customization options. Although I prefer in Infinite how your preview is above the list of options, rather than to the right. To be honest my dream would be for customization to use lists, like in Halo: Reach. Reach nailed menus pretty much all across the board. Infinite could stand to take a hint from that game instead of Halo 5 or the MCC which both have rather clumsy menus.
In addition, the inputs required to equip items is cumbersome. Selecting a helmet, for example, opens up another menu screen with a lore tab and an attachment tab, so it takes 3 button presses to choose your helmet, switch to attachments, and then equip the variant you want. Variants could just be listed right on the lore page. There’s plenty of space.
A few thoughts on the battlepass:
XP boosts. They feel really unsatisfying to use. Firstly, the timer starts counting down as soon as you use it which means you can easily lose a few minutes of it just trying to get into a match. Secondly, there’s too much pressure to feel like you’re “optimizing” your time with it, and trying to get all your challenges in the right place. It takes the fun out of playing the way you want. I think these would work better if they just instantly granted a level, and there were maybe 5 of them throughout the whole pass. That way, you could save them up and when a new BP comes out, you can get a little bit of a head-start. Otherwise, if you’re a new player just jumping in you could use them to “catch up” on other passes, or progress a pass that you aren’t currently targeting to receive XP.
Challenge rerolls. These shouldn’t be in the pass. If I buy a Halo Infinite BP and get challenge rerolls, that feels like a bummer. It would be nicer to just get an allotment of 2 or 3 each day, but where they don’t accumulate.
I also really hope that every level on the BP takes the exact same amount of XP. It again makes it feel too grindy if the first couple of levels take one challenge, and the last level takes your entire week’s worth of challenges. A nice, even rate of progression would be nicer even if it’s the same amount of total XP. This would also mean that paying to skip a level could grant a set amount of XP, so if you had 450/500 XP on a level, using the skip would bring you to 450/500 on the next.
The “killing spree” medal sounds like “chilling spree” and I am not there for it.
