Infinite Tech Preview – UI & LIVE

After using the UI over the course of the flight.

I personally like simple and minimal UI which this is a step in the right direction my only main complaints were the Store, customization section and medals.

The store i felt like was a mess and purchasing the Battle Pass took me a bit to figure out.

The customization section was pretty confusing at times, i would often find myself in sections i had no idea how i ended up there, also i think we should be able to rotate and zoom in and out of our Spartans in the customization previews.

The medal designs i good but the only complaint i have with them is they should be slightly bigger, when you earn them in game they are really small and hard to see most of the time.

The settings also felt a little overwhelming at first but the amount of ways we can customized and edit things is brilliant.

Only major issue i ran into was when you changed everything to Ultra settings it would break a lot of the UI and functions of the menus especially the store, it also effected you being able to go into the academy and bot slayer.

UI has its issues. It looks simple to use, but then it can be very clunky and messy in organization and how you use it. Some simple things are clearly missing here.

  • No clickable back button within the Customization Menu seems weird. Unless I missed it, it just disappears when you’re back to the beginning. - Lot of blank spaces or unloaded boxes makes it messy and I’m not sure what I’m looking at. - The Shop Menu feels like a pain to look at. There needs to be a better way to present the information of what items you can get on the front page. - Should make it more apparent where and how to use a consumable (XP Boost, etc) - Challenges should be displayed on the main overlay/screen of the game I feel or something readily apparent.

> First time giving my input on a forum! Anyways I played the weekend on xsx and the games amazing. Well done there. I’m not sure this fits under UI, but I have an issue with art design, specifically the medals. I feel some of the creativity behind the designs have been lost. A series of medals all share the same green aesthetic and have lost their individuality. “Kill from the grave” for example was this awesome skull, shaped like a star and now its just a green tombstone. A ton of cool new medals like marksman, backhand, reversal, etc could’ve had more unique designs. Halo 3 I think has the best collection of medals that all feel original and is the model I’d like to see adopted. I’m not sure its still possible to do before launch, but its my 2cents.

I agree with all this, loved the game for the most part! For me the biggest problem was the medals being too small and generic. I feel like medals have been an important part of the Halo MP experience but now they seem a bit useless. You can’t really tell them apart from each other and getting an overkill etc. doesn’t feel as hype as it used to. For example the perfect medal used to be bright yellow but now is just generic blue like the rest of the medals. I hope that the official build has a more traditional medal style and that they are placed in the low middle part of the screen. I do love all the new medals though, just not the designs necessarily. Just make the medals stand out a bit more.

The face that you couldn’t progress the battle pass by just playing the game. Limiting it to progression via challenges isn’t the way to do a battle pass imo. All battle passes have progression via match completion.

Please let us level the battle pass with match completion. Give a little xp towards the pass after every game. Just look at Call of Duty’s/Fortnite/Apex BP system.

UI feels really cluttered, misaligned and difficult to navigate, I’m not really comfortable with how customizing the armor and weapons: it’s done better in MCC

Also I don’t really like that playing regular matches don’t bring you any XP unless you complete a challenge, doesn’t really motivate me to play after I completed the challenges.

Menu and UI felt pretty clean. On Series X it would be nice for the background to be 4K. It felt like the resolution was maybe 1080 while the menu boxes and text was sharp 4K.

Sometimes text was difficult to read against light backgrounds.

Took me a while to find where to activate XP boosts.

XP should be given for every match and not just when challenges are completed.

Need a way to mute people in game.

Medals could use a sprucing up. Hard to really tell what you got with the color coding.

After action report can be difficult to read with light font and background and overall design isn’t quite as sharp as say H5.

Possible to move in game UI around? Like move radar to top?

In game UI - personal preference but I miss having a little more UI detail that makes it look like a Spartan visor.

Had a great time this weekend. Thanks for the hard work and making a great game!

Problems with battle pass and challenges, I’m unsure if this was consistent for other players. But during the flight test my challenges consisted of playing game modes that weren’t released to me yet. (Ex. Capture 3 enemy flags) I then cycled my challenges out for new ones and then it gave me slayer challenges, challenges I could complete. Once I then completed those challenges, I no longer received any new ones for the rest of the flight test. This halted my XP Progression.

This!!! The Shop is really a mess, i feel like it could be better if it was organized as the one in CoD Warzone or the first few seasons of Fortnite (not the new one, that one’s messy too)

I really had a hard time every time I tried to use an XP boost, i feel like CoD handles this well too

Also I feel like challenges are well as they are but they can be better, maybe they could be placed below the Season Pass and Level indicator (in the same box) and giving the option to see all the challenges available as it is right now. Also I think it would be nice if we could see the challenges mid-match, i really suck at remembering specific challenges like “Get X kills with Y weapon in Z game mode” or something like that, so I’d really appreciate it if we could see them in the start menu or the player list.

Battle Pass

First of all, I love the approach to implementing a battle pass system that shakes off the FOMO techniques of other titles and focuses on player reward at their convenience - great job! However, that being said, I’m a little confused as to the progression system. An example being I amassed quite a few XP boosts over the flight period, but using them is rather counter intuitive as…well they don’t really do anything during your playtime (as far as the battle pass goes) other than force you to micromanage your challenges so you know when it’s appropriate to active a 30 minute booster for a 10 minute match to double your XP for completion. You they don’t help you with the progression of a challenge for example.

Perhaps you could consider an XP booster specifically made for challenges e.g you activate a booster and apply it to the challenges directly. You cut out the middle man and micromanaging, and the player gets to focus on just enjoying the game vs. checking to see if this round is the one they need to activate an XP booster for (as it holds no relevance to the actual game performance as far as I’m aware) I think this would go a long way in streamlining the experience and making it a lot more enjoyable, removing an element of artificial grind and focusing on the fun of the game.

U.I

I love a lot of the UI - for example the HUD. I think it’s minimalistic without being detrimental, and with the in game call outs and visuals it works nicely together. I would definitely make those medals just a little bit bigger as it can be hard to keep track of what you’re earning (and half the fun is seeing a big splash of colour on your screen).

I think a lot of the boxiness of the menus could be reigned in slightly. For the most part I love it but there’s elements that contrast quite harshly off of one another. You’ve made a BEAUTIFUL lobby screen, armor hall etc. but it gets cluttered with boxes all over the screen, reduce that, or at least give us an option to reduce the opacity of the menu screens and I think, personally, it would look a lot better and do service to the wonderful job you guys have done with the visuals in this game.

Love the game by the way guys, thanks for the invite. Best weekend in a while.

Battlepass: Now as much as I love that challenges are back in Halo in a meaningful way. I do very much dislike how you can only progress in the battlepass through challenges. Really de-motivates you to keep playing after you’ve beaten all the daily and weekly challenges. I’d be okay if challenges remain one of the main ways you progress through the battlepass, but it’d mean a lot to the player if they were also progressing through regular gameplay, and rewarding them for doing well in a match.

Radar: This one, I don’t like at all. Now I understand from a pro perspective this may be good. However, for casual Playlists I do not like. The amount of times I’ve been killed from behind when I should’ve noticed them on my radar, really sucks. I think it’d be best to return the radar to its regular version where you see all player movement, besides crouch. Atleast in casual Playlists, I’d be okay if this remained in competitive Playlists, as I understand that’s what it’s for.

UI: Really my main concern is the (News) panel. That covers up way too much of the screen. Would rather see the rest of my friends Spartans. I think there should be a toggle to view the news or not on the main screen. Like “Press Y for news” and it’ll toggle the news for players to read.

I understand the Halo cross hairs are classic, but an option to customize similar to Overwatch and VALORANT along with many other games would be highly appreciated. When aiming with the sidearm, i could barely see through it with all the clutter. If this is meant to be a competitive fps a more customizable cross hair is VERY important.

I would make the customization UI vertical. I feel like it would be a lot cleaner looking. Also, I would really love a Halo Reach style Pre Game Lobby. Where we can see everything. The map, people’s Spartans, their rank, service records, ect, ect. The In game UI needs some work too. I feel like there’s too much going on on the bottom right. It’s hard to tell if I have more than 1 type of grenade, ect. Thanks guys!

Here’s my overall feedback on the UI & Battlepass. Some of these are rather lengthy, but I felt it was necessary to explain my point:

  • Battlepass EXP should be gained from completing matches and performing well as well as from completing challenges. This both supplements casual players who only complete a few challenges and matches, as well as the hardcore players. If a player wants to put 20 hours in on a single day, why should they only be rewarded for the challenges they completed in the first two hours? This is also important because of the game’s 10-year-plan. How will this system support a player who purchases every battlepass after 8 years? Will a player be expected to complete every 100~ tier pass while only getting a few levels per week from challenges? - The Personal AI selection menu should have a “Preview Voice” function. Sure, I might initially think Fret looks the cutest of all the AI that were in the flights, but I (personally) did not enjoy his personality. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, I disliked Lumu’s visual appearance, but she ended up being my favorite AI companion. I ended up having to equip every AI and playing a few matches with each of them, rather than just previewing their voice lines in the menu and deciding within a few minutes. Not a major issue, but definitely QoL. - I personally like doing things in menus while waiting to connect to a match, however short that wait may be. This, however, is made a slight hassle in the game’s current state, as in order to get to your customization menu or the store from the multiplayer queue, you have to back out of the queue. It’d be nice if the customization and store tabs were available during queue so I could mess around or check things out during lengthier waits. - Medals that appear on-screen during a match are far too small and should be enlarged to about how large Halo 3 had them at and moved to either just above or below the Kill Feed. This would help to keep the screen as uncluttered as possible, while showing off your medals. I had to lean into my screen multiple times to look at a medal during a match because of the size. - Medals really should retain their legacy designs in terms of color. All of the medals being color-coded to match each other feels a bit sad and lacks the “flair” of other Halo games’ medals. It helps to differentiate each player achievement from one another. - I would love a settings option that allows for HUD customization. Allow me to move each item around on-screen to create my ideal HUD, or create a few presets and allow players to choose from those. Default, Legacy, ODST, et cetera. - Consider allowing every store item to be available permanently, rather than rotating out daily or weekly. There are days when people can’t play due to life and priorities, and to lose out on an armor, weapon, or vehicle customization option for some time because of an arbitrarily rotating list would be frustrating. This happened to me in Modern Warfare (2019) multiple times and I’d be sad to see it happen here.
[Not feedback, but rather a suggestion]
Feel free to ignore this bit entirely (especially if it’s already a thing), but weapon and vehicle cores that change the model of the weapon or vehicle to a different one would be phenomenal. Keeping the weapon functionally the same, but allowing for greater customization and personalization per player, while staying entirely true to canon. Imagine making a classic MA5C model to replace the MA40. This would even allow for the addition of never-before-seen-in-game weapons like the MA5K Carbine. It would expand customization to an incredible degree and would be one of the coolest ideas for personalization in Infinite.

I wasn’t a fan with most of the menu systems.

For battlepass/challenges, I never felt like I properly got the hang of the menus, they’re rather clumsy and it can be a bit of a pain to figure out how to get to the right pages due to the links between them being rather obtuse. I always felt like I was just stumbling around until I got to where I was trying to go.

The customization menus are far too bulky and I can foresee a nightmare trying to scroll through all the options to get to where I want, especially in a year or so when I’ll probably have dozens of different coatings. The icons could stand to be smaller, with perhaps 3 or so rows, like the Halo 5 customization options. Although I prefer in Infinite how your preview is above the list of options, rather than to the right. To be honest my dream would be for customization to use lists, like in Halo: Reach. Reach nailed menus pretty much all across the board. Infinite could stand to take a hint from that game instead of Halo 5 or the MCC which both have rather clumsy menus.

In addition, the inputs required to equip items is cumbersome. Selecting a helmet, for example, opens up another menu screen with a lore tab and an attachment tab, so it takes 3 button presses to choose your helmet, switch to attachments, and then equip the variant you want. Variants could just be listed right on the lore page. There’s plenty of space.

A few thoughts on the battlepass:

XP boosts. They feel really unsatisfying to use. Firstly, the timer starts counting down as soon as you use it which means you can easily lose a few minutes of it just trying to get into a match. Secondly, there’s too much pressure to feel like you’re “optimizing” your time with it, and trying to get all your challenges in the right place. It takes the fun out of playing the way you want. I think these would work better if they just instantly granted a level, and there were maybe 5 of them throughout the whole pass. That way, you could save them up and when a new BP comes out, you can get a little bit of a head-start. Otherwise, if you’re a new player just jumping in you could use them to “catch up” on other passes, or progress a pass that you aren’t currently targeting to receive XP.

Challenge rerolls. These shouldn’t be in the pass. If I buy a Halo Infinite BP and get challenge rerolls, that feels like a bummer. It would be nicer to just get an allotment of 2 or 3 each day, but where they don’t accumulate.

I also really hope that every level on the BP takes the exact same amount of XP. It again makes it feel too grindy if the first couple of levels take one challenge, and the last level takes your entire week’s worth of challenges. A nice, even rate of progression would be nicer even if it’s the same amount of total XP. This would also mean that paying to skip a level could grant a set amount of XP, so if you had 450/500 XP on a level, using the skip would bring you to 450/500 on the next.

The “killing spree” medal sounds like “chilling spree” and I am not there for it.

Levelling up the pass for credits feels unsatisfying, as its a paid skip. Also unless I’m mistaken it just moves you to the next level regardless of how much XP was needed to level up. It should just always give you for example a 500xp boost, or cost less the closer you are to a level up, so using it always feels equally valuable.

Only getting XP from challenges feels less rewarding. Its makes timing the use of XP boosts overly important to makes to most use of them.
I wish you could see how long the boosts had left outside of the battle pass screen.

For that in some times feel confused because don’t load the information and appears challenges of play modes what doesn’t be able to play and the way what level up only for challenges wasn’t good because the challenges over and there’s no way yo increase the level.

Played in Xbox Series X.

1.- Main menu theme looks very generic, maybe becuse is a tech preview.
2.- The menus are a little “to much”, like you need to go through a lot of menus and options to reach the thing you were looking for.
3.- The weapon and armor customization menu is a great addition.
4.- In-Game UI seems a little weird, the score bar in the middle of the screen is not friendly to the view, also checking ammo and grenades when you are playing distract you from the match as are very small icons in the corner.
5.- The icons for medals are very small.

It is very good, but sometimes for the change of weapon skins and vehicles it felt quite confusing, maybe it is because there were still no skins for vehicles and I did not have any for my weapons, but it is only limited to the choice of skins of weapons and vehicles.
