Infinite Tech Preview – UI & LIVE

The overall menu and in game UI is awesome.

The only thing I am not really a fan of is the in game medals, they seem smaller and I am not sure about the positioning. It just seems like they are not given as much importance?

The animations for medal pop in and out are really good though.

The images of newly acquired objects after a Match report are not appearing where they should be.

The main menu UI is quite web-like, and needs to be simplified for consistent navigation with fewer keys. It’s okay to have “shortcuts” here and there, but all of the menus should be navigable through the main branch as well. I think the current layout makes sense for controller (bumpers to switch tabs, ABXY for varying actions on screen), but it feels like I’m having to jump all over my keyboard to navigate the menus (or click all over the screen with my mouse).

ESC should bring you up one level in the branching menu, instead of pulling up the control panel (already bound to F1). When I hit ESC while on the Customize tab, and it brings up a black Control Panel menu, then I hit ESC again to go back to the black Customize tab (before it loads)… It’s just a bit disorienting. Maybe there should be one-higher menu level, where you can just see the main options with a nice backdrop. Also, backspace is not a very comfortable button to press when I’m using a mouse. ESC can still be used to exit the game from the top menu level, with a prompt of course.

I do like the Social menu and Control Panel being in parallel with the main menu system. I saves me from backing out of what I’m doing to take care of player invites, or adjust music volume, or whatever. I think the season progress screen (accessed through the control panel) is pretty, but maybe could be brought up through a hold button (for a quick peak) and close upon button release, and get rid of the “R” button on the Play menu. If it doesn’t make sense to have the Season Progress menu in parallel with the rest of the main menu, then Battlepass and Challenges should have their own tabs or something on the top-level menu. I hate that the Battlepass and Challenges are accessible from a few locations, but not directly accessible through the main branch.

Menu buttons should be more consistent in their function across the many menus. I feel like I’m constantly reading the bottom left corner to figure out what my keys actually do. For example, it feels more natural to me, to have the Space key equip armor pieces (since that’s the key I use to “select” things) and have another key inspect things (since it’s sort of a secondary thing to do). In general, I would like to be able to do everything I do most frequently with the same four buttons: up, down, select, back.

I know the UI is still in work, so hopefully some of my feedback is helpful. I think the “horizontal tabs opening to vertical lists” menu style can work well with both console and PC, with a little more tuning.

The images of the objects are not appearing in the Battle Pass section

What’s the point of the in-game personal scoring? You’re not getting xp for anything you do, and it’s not really necessary to understand what’s going on in the game.

When customizing the spartan armor it auto reverts to previously selected pieces.
At first I thought I’d might be my favorites auto selecting themselves based on rarity, however when I unfavorited the armor pieces and attempted to change them the same problem occurred.

Also I hope that in the final game you get xp from playing games not only 4 the challenges…

We need more options for customizing our in-game HUD. Color would be nice, but I’m mostly concerned about per-part opacity. The reticles of some guns are a bit obstructive, and I’d like to turn down their opacity while keeping my other HUD UI elements high-opacity. I appreciate that we can customize the outline through accessibility settings.

When viewing the game assets from armor, weapons to vehicles.
There is no way to zoom in and admire the smaller details.
If this could be added later combined with the option to hide the UI at the same time, it would be appreciated.

Thank you for reading.

Make it so that each game you’re rewarded with exp. Give us a win bonus, a match finished chunk of exp, kill/assist/capture/points exp. To avoid boosting/boosters, you can cap how much exp you get from kills/assists.

It doesn’t even have to be that much. 2 exp per kill up to a max of 40 exp for kills, and 1 exp per assist up to a max of 20 exp for assists. (Only in slayer modes to make sure in objective games, people aren’t just going for kills)

In objective modes, make it so that a flag capture gives 15 or 20 exp, oddball or time in hill are given 1 exp per 5 points or something.

Then 10 exp for finishing a match and 20 exp for winning the match. This would also make the “double exp” tokens much more worth it. It would also keep players engaged and willing to play longer, rather than getting their weeklies done and putting Halo down until the next week. The double exp tokens last for 30 mins, and if I’m done my weeklies, and I only have the daily challenge to do… it’s not worth using the token. At most I can get 200 extra exp?

But if I’ve already been playing, and my daily challenge is up to play any match 0/5, using a double exp token would be a waste as I can’t complete 5 matches in 30 mins. But if I got exp per match, per kill, per objective… it would be worth it. Not to mention that I would be inclined to play better. I would want to go for the win. I’d want to play the objective, because I’d get more exp for doing so.

In past Halo games, objective modes suffered from players just trying to pad their K/D ratio. If you reward players with exp from objective points… more players will play the objective.

So please, give us exp per match. I want to have a a reason to keep playing even after my weekly challenges are done.

I just watched recently the last trailer, and when the custom apartan changes it’s AI, It seems like a yellow shield, I really hope we can at least change that color. But It would be dream-like to change the shape of It (like vale’s, buck’s in h5 hud)

I think the UI is mostly fine, but I do have a gripe, during a match, I found no way to mute players or navigate the player list. Is this truly not a feature or I’m the one who’s doing something wrong? Mainly, because I wanted to mute an annoying dude that was like typing loudly or something and I had to go to the menu and globally all the voice chat.

Also, its confusing (especially on PC, I also played on Xbox) to have the check marks in the customization menu, usually when one clicks or selects on them one expects them to apply the customization but in this case it doesn’t help to do that, instead one must use the button that says “equip”. If this feature won’t be a part of the UI, it would be better to mark the currently equipped customization in some other way… maybe box the item with some thin blue lines and the word equipped somewhere maybe on top or below or both.

I hope this helps in some way.

Few suggestions regarding UI functionality and overall ease of usability. I am playing on PC with a controller.

  • When applying armor pieces/ coatings, pressing (A) and then (X) is cumbersome. Having (A) both select and apply selection is a faster option. - When unlocking battlepass items, pressing different buttons to cycle through the items and skip the progress animation is cumbersome. Using (A) to select and skip is a faster way to get through the animations that are repetitive. - UI is cumbersome and the design isn’t very intuitive. Horizontal scrolling for armor coating, weapons etc. is unnecessarily tedious. Having these as vertical selections would make the menus feel a bit less repetitive and allow for you to have more of the options visible instead of side scrolling one by one.

Some challenges are PvP, so un this technical preview it can’t let win exp to the battle pasa, I have to skip many challenges to the ones that can ve completed in this preview

Feedback so far…

  • Not a fan of the way you customize your Spartan. Having to select an item from a category, to then click on a little checkbox that’s barely visible doesn’t make for a good experience. - Would like a way to enter the customization from pretty much any menu in the game, except the settings. Or at least from the battle pass UI, so that when I unlock an item, I can go and preview and equip it without having to go back to find the customization menu. - The FoF system takes a while to get used to, right now isn’t that much of an issue since bots always have a blue coating, but when going PvP it would be harder to adjust to it, some sort of improvement would be nice, since everyone would be using all sorts of colors and you would be in for some unintentional friendly damage. - I think I’d like a way to adjust where items in the HUD appear on the screen, still not used to grenades/equipment/weapon on the lower right. - A way to rotate models for the Spartan, weapons and vehicles would be much appreciated, just like MCC. - It also feels like the fonts used in the settings are a bit disconnected, they don’t match. It’s something really glaring to me.
  • the way you eqip skins etc. is very unintuitive, its X to equip and A to get more details. Should be the other way around, I always press A thinking it would equip. - items being organized horizantally is very, very bad for a game that will likely have thousands of items in each category. This design might be fine to select the overall category (for example helmet in the armor menu), but its a no go for selecting the actual item. A grid style would be much better, fitting 20+ items on a page instead of the few that can be seen now - the friendslist should be part of the menu like it is in MCC or OG Halo 2/Halo Reach. Seeing who is playing as you come online makes the game feel a lot more social, right now you have to access an extra menu for it. - challenges: there needs to be way more of these if they are the only way to earn exp. MCC has a really good amount of weekly + seasonal challenges at the moment. I’d assume the current ones are just placeholders anyway. - Speaking of exp: You should be able to earn them through playing the game. Even if its just 10 or even just 1 exp per game, I should be able to grind out more per week if I want to play all day. For example, having a few days off work to pump through the season pass is not possible right now, as you’d get limited by the amount of challenges. - Overall the menu design feels a bit… well generic. Its very close to the Halo 5 design and pretty “square” overall. I think a more Haloesque design from Halo 1-4 or even a more modern round design (akin to win 11) would be a huge step up. At the very least there should be less dead screen space, the only menu that really fills out your screen atm are the settings (which btw is a nice menu as is). - Not being able to select your colors is well… odd to say the least. I understand that this is an easy way to create cosmetic monetization options, but “coats” should be kept to weapons, not your whole suit. Maybe unlock colors or the ability to color a certain part in a certain color instead? I feel like a lot of individual expression in your spartan is lost without being able to color it yourself.

i agree everything in general is small customization screen the medals in game the powerups in the game. I feel like at launch u will gain XP fromjust playing the game but who knows for sure. Alot of people are hoping for better HUD customization and im with you on that as well. Thank you for the insight

Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but why does colour coating not affect prostheses? This is extremely noticeable on the “Scorpion punch” coating.

I think the battlepass feels pretty nice, I’m glad they never expire, that’s something I loved about the MCC season passes. I like how there are some free rewards as well for the people that don’t want to pay for full access. The challenges felt pretty good as well, though they could definitely use more variety in what they are; course this is only a tech build so their will probably be more implemented. Love that we got a reward for completing all the weekly challenges, back in halo reach if you completed them all you got nothing, just RP. I don’t know if its a bug that the matches aren’t awarding any XP? I hope so, because if challenges are the only way to gain XP and level up, that’s a horrible system. Customization feels pretty good, love the ability to pick every piece of armor like in reach, though like others have said we need to be able to rotate the spartan and see them fully(I’m sure that’s probably already a feature that will be in the full game or future flights). One thing I would personally like to change would be the ability to go to the customization menu by pressing start. When I’m matchmaking, I have to back out of the matchmaking screen and then go to the customization screen and then back again. It would be nice to just press start and have it be one of the options. Other than that I think its off to a good start, I’m curious to see what it will be like in the following flights. Thanks for making an amazing game!
