Infinite Tech Preview – Social Arena

I think where do I start?

343 you made a PC game and abandoned the Halo OGs

The OS feedback is horrendous. It looks like old cable snow. What happened to the green?
There is just an overwhelming amount of UI / HUD going on. It’s so distracting. Red vs Blue was pretty straight forward and I could see a teammates tag which was helpful in locating them. Now I see them through walls etc.

it’s no longer a space shooter. It’s way too grounded in reality. Even the sound effects are much more base like moving away from the sound effects we know and love. Pull a shot from the sniper and you’ll know what I mean.

halo was about an even playing field too. I love being able to respond to someone when getting shot and turning it around on them . HI doesn’t allow that. The assault rifle I can be killed from a mile away. The pistol went from primary to secondary. It takes 7-9 shots. Are you kidding me? In this game I’d die 6x over before pulling off that many shots.

Everything is also tiny. I’m playing on a big screen tv and barely notice I received a medal. The camera view is much more distant too. Halo is about being up close and personal. This game is not that.

Grenades and melees are critical. But now we’ve gone back to H3 where the damage was so little a melee is a bad idea. Also throwing a grenade during battle is a terrible idea. You’ll get mulled over so fast that grenade toss was simply giving the enemy an opening. The same applies to melee.

Why do I die so fast? The AR is so OP it’s dumb. I shot a guy from like 500 yards away and killed them. It does so much damage up close too. The weapons simply don’t make sense to change and I didn’t find new ones as often as I’d like. Most of the time I’m armed with an AR and that’s awful. I don’t want that as my starting weapon. It’s a backup when I get into trouble.

The maps are huge too. Very well designed but massive.

I can go on and on. I’ve played every Halo. It’s my game. I love it. I’ve been playing since the xbox OG days. This is now a PC shooter with limited concern for console gamers and is basically Counter Strike with Halo weapons. I’m sad. My opinion doesn’t matter as I’m only one guy. But just know that I’m beyond upset because I absolutely love love love Halo and this is such a far cry from what embodies Halo. And for all the trolls, it’s just one man’s opinion and you won’t convince me otherwise. Save your energy.

I would love to see player collision for teammates. I’ve encountered multiple scenarios where the enemy I’m shooting backs into one of their teamates and phases right through them, leaving my shots to land on the new enemy player instead of the original target. It feels cheap and janky and breaks the immersion, as well as displaces that classic halo strategy of choosing proper target acquisition. I feel like friendly fire would help to combat grenade spam too.

Also… I miss the old school UI for friendlies. Yellow for firing, red x for death. The current death symbol is not prominent enough.

> Enable friendly fire. You shouldn’t be able to walk through your teammates or throw grenades around them. That takes away from the realism tremendously.

Overshield needs a buff. Not sure if it’s the lack of invincibility when you apply it like in pretty much all previous games or the time it takes to shoot someone out of it or a combo of both but it needs fixing.

Bazaar feels too cluttered with the invisible barriers.

Sniper descope is very inaccurate.

Hello, I’m playing on the Xbox One Elite.
My feedback so far:

SOUND:

  1. You should be able to turn off the AI-Assistant or make him less “funny”.

  2. It’s hard to hear where an enemy is coming from (too many other sounds/ footsteps not pronounced enough)

VISUALS:

  1. Effects look like they’re from a comic and just disappear after 1 sec (Grenades, plasma).
The grenade for example looks like somebody burned a balloon filled with Hydrogen. Instead there should be smoke. Like how a real grenade looks like.

  2. No persistent scarring (crater/burn from grenades, bullet holes in walls, plasma burns on walls). This should be added.

  3. Plasma weapons should “light up” their surroundings when fired/ when the plasma bolt passes the environment.

  4. Blood should be toggle-able (blood splatter on walls etc.)

  5. Please remove the red spartan outline and go back to Red VS Blue or give us the option to toggle it. Very confusing. You could still show the personal armor color in the start or end screen of the game.

  6. The game is too bright in certain spots. Bazar comes to mind, especially when leaving buildings.

  7. Medals should be bigger.

  8. Shield “hitzones” (red coloring) when shooting an enemy should be removed. They don’t look good and don’t add anything to the game.

GAMEPLAY:
1.Scopes should be all the same. Either no scope or Ads, no SMARTSCOPE.

2.Slide should have less range when sprinting for a short time/ longer range when sprinting longer

3.To little aim assist.

4.AR too strong, pistol too weak.

  1. Too many homing weapons (carbine/needler)

  2. Give us progression without challenges

  3. Add player collision

  4. Better physics. Explosions and grav hammer should send people flying.

  5. Enable friendly fire (otherwise grenade spam gets out of hand)

BUGS:

  1. Scoreboard flicker when opening it.

UI:

  1. The menus don’t look good. Really bland and soulless. The background is not very inspired either.

> Yeah. I hate when I’m going to the battle rifle spawn on one map, only to find a commando instead. It messes with map memorization.

And the flow of the game at the same time because you feel jipped which you actually are, now changing the weapons should only take place when it’s a different game mode being played but definitely not from one Slayer game to the next.

That had nothing to do with the magnum being overpowered and everything to do with 343 making the other guns to weak in comparison.

There are a lot of positive things, but here is my big first look constructive criticism.

  1. AR needs to be nerfed slightly.
  2. Sniper needs to be completely accurate out of scope and have no bloom.
  3. Needler, Plasma Pistol, and other tracking bullets aren’t fast enough to track a player walking horizontally.
  4. Put timers on weapon pads rather than load bars.
  5. Grenades/Equipment/Weapon and Ammo should be moved to top right/left of HUD. I can’t see everything with it all crammed down in the right corner.

I believe there’s a lot of us that want to be able to turn off the sarcastic remarks during mm. All we want to hear are things like double kill, flag taken, close to victory, and such. The “funny” remarks become old very fast to the point of annoying.

I thought that the Sidearm was just right in the flight, it shot fast like a true gun would and also it has a nice quick reload speed. I wouldn’t change it at all especially since we will be using it in campaign too. I own a sig .45 and believe me when I say you can rip off bullets as fast as you can pull that trigger, 15 rounds in 3½ seconds and they are all in a small group.

Yes and no. Pre-TU the Magnum was outshined in most aspects by the other precision options. That worked fine enough within the Warzone environment, but at the highest level of Arena play players were getting held in spawn traps by opposing teams controlling an array of more widely effective weapons. The Magnum wasn’t effective enough against many of the other precision options to allow players to break out of spawn traps consistently enough. This, along with a desire to add more of a skill curve to the AR, were the major components driving the big Weapon Tuning overhaul. The overhaul got a lot right with regards to bringing a better balance to the Arena sandbox; however, it also made some miscalculations. The biggest one was the state they left the default BR in. That’s because it was their original intention to replace the Magnum with the BR as the starting precision option and pair it with the Gunfighter Magnum as the secondary option. It’s redesign left it objectively as a bit worse option then the Magnum. That’s in-part why there was backlash during the test phases and ultimately why they didn’t go down the route of making the BR and Gunfighter the loadout options. Well, that and plenty of people didn’t want to see the standard Magnum messed with. But, the default BR was unfortunately left in a poor state for the Arena. Even to this day I clamor for 343i to replace that version of the BR in Arena with the Long-Barrel variant in order to provide it with a useful niche within the Arena sandbox. As it is now there’s little real reason to pick up the default BR. There are still clear reasons to pick up a DMR, a Carbine, a LR, etc. But, why bother with the BR when it has essentially no favorable niche of effectiveness over the Magnum?

my thoughts/suggestions for this tech preview are just;

  • i hate that its only 4v4, i really hope when the game is fully released its atleast 6v6
  • i think the sprint is way too slow
  • this is more just an idea i think would be cool but i hope theres gonna be maps using low gravity because the 0 gravity zones in forge just seem like missed potential with how you cant resize or reshape them
  • hopefully therell be some advanced custom match creator when the game is released, to make private matches more fun and interesting and to add more customization than normally with forge

> 2535438737725674;868:
> The pistol and the ar are too viable at longer ranges they often outgun the br and the commando while also being easier to use. They need to be made less viable so that harder to use guns like the br perform better

Personally, I think the AR is perfect as it is, because in Halo 5 it was useless most of the time, and it’s a bit weaker than Halo 4’s AR, perfect!

As for the Sidekick, I’m having trouble killing opponents with it, I can’t use it like Halo 5’s Magnum. ^^’

Couple things about the UI/medals:

  • Loved in Halo 3 how you would see the top medals of the game after a match. Made it that much more satisfying to get high killing sprees knowing everyone would see it.

  • Also wish it was quicker to click through players after a match, instead backing out and clicking the next person. Just be able to slide through everyone by clicking right button would be nice.

Otherwise, surprising pleased with the game :+1: Although there’s much to be improved, great job so far. The criticism in previous posts are very valid and just hope they are acted upon to make the game as good as possible.

Improvement
No scope - I’d like to see it changed back to snapshot. Its a minor thing but I liked how halo called it something different than other shooters. Makes halo more unique.

Hammer melee - The melee for the hammer should be changed back to hitting people with the hilt, or something similar(like utilizing the blade on the hammer). I don’t like how it is the same animation, just without the gravity effect.

Color individual armor pieces - I would like to be able to color certain armor pieces.

Be able to save outfits - Being able to save outfits would be nice. Perhaps you could add a save slot to the battle pass or something.

Scrolling in the menu during training mode causes flashing - I noticed when I scrolled down really fast in the training mode menu it would flash sometimes.

Grenades bouncing on dirt/ mud? - I’d like to see grenades interact with the environment better. Like bouncing on metal or concrete surfaces, and not bouncing or little bouncing on dirt and sand. Right now the grenades act the same whether on dirt or metal.

HUD - I liked the older HUDs. Infinite’s HUD is packed away in the corner and it is hard to keep track of what you have compared to the older games. I often will be playing without realizing I had a grapple shot or something, until I die. The mini menu within the HUD to switch grenades is complicated, and I would like it to be changed to where you just push left or right on the D pad to switch grenades like the other halo games.

Trouble switching grenades - Mini menu is hard to use, or rather its unnecessary. You can only hold 2 grenade types so just have it to where you switch between them with D pad (left and right)

Bot standing still - I encountered bots standing still a couple of times. Once I walked closer to them they started working like normal again.

Bot crouching / different play styles - It would be interesting to see if you could make the bots have different play styles. For example one play style might crouch around the map more to be sneakier, or One could have a super aggressive play style where it will often rush you.

Like to see friendly fire - I miss friendly fire, but at the same time its not that big of a deal.

Give us the ability to give bots certain weapons so we can train against them. - In training mode I would like to see a setting where you could change what the bots load outs are so that you could train against a certain weapon or just have fun with a bunch of bots with hammers.

Definitely consider adding a mythic difficulty to bot

Make the weapons selected in training mode stay as they were and not reset every time you open the menu. - I don’t like how every time I opened the menu in training mode, I would have to reselect the weapons I wanted

Add the star back to the kill feed when you get a perfect - It would be nice to see the star back in the kill feed when you get a perfect kill.

Red vs blue toggle - Consider adding an option to toggle red vs blue in matches. I do like how each spartan looks unique and you get to use your customized spartan in PvP other than FFA, but I’m not such a big fan of the outlines. I don’t like to see my teammates outline through the wall. I did encounter an issue where I saw and enemy outline through the wall once.

Assassinations - I’m not sure how I feel about what you plan to do with assassinations. I liked them the way they are, and I don’t understand why some people have problems with them, even when there’s an option to turn them off. Hopefully they will turn out well and the reward that you get for assassinations will not be overpowered or useless. I understand why you would give the assassinations a purpose but if it is to get a slight overshield or camo it would not make much sense, because where did the over shield come from. Hopefully they turn out well, maybe I’m being too critical.

My floor is gone - I encountered a bug where when I loaded into live fire the ground wasn’t there. This lasted through the entire match, and Im not too sure what happened. The walls and building were all still there.

Footstep squares - A small bug happened when the footsteps left behind had black squares around them

Saw enemy outline through wall - I mentioned previously I saw an enemy outline through the wall.

Walking through people - I would like to have collision between players, friendly and enemies.

Good
Bots - Bots were incredible. I enjoyed them and they work well

Sounds like halo 1 - The sounds in this game were astounding. I absolutely love all the sounds for the guns.

Grapple shot - Initially I thought I wasn’t going to like it, but once I used it I liked it quite a bit.

Halo 5 lighting on spartans - I like how spartans don’t stand out in the dark and there is actual shading compared to halo 5

Overall I think this game is really awesome and well done to everyone working on the game. I understand that this is not the complete version, but I would like to see some of the things I mentioned put into the game. I’m excited for the release of the actual game.

Yeah the Grapple Shot was cool wasn’t it.

Sandbox:

  • Plasma Pistol is a bit useless. - The grenade radius is massive, absolutely needs to be nerfed. The radius extends so far beyond the visual explosion that it doesn’t make sense to the player. - I understand the Sidekick is meant to be just a “side weapon” but I think the bloom could be just a LITTLE less intense. - The reticle bloom on the Sniper in between shots - why does it exist? There shouldn’t be a moving circle in the middle of the screen that doesn’t indicate anything to the player. - The Bulldog is too weak, it gets outplayed by the AR quite easily.
    Non-sandbox feedback:

  • Something needs to be done with the player outlines. I’ve never played an FPS in which its so distracting and in your face. Worse yet, it makes it difficult to read enemy shields as you could in past Halo games. Maybe only highlight teammates? - It’d be really nice if the reticle appeared red when aim assist is occurring as in past Halo games - CTF Audio cues are obnoxious - Optimization…it ran bad for every person I know on PC. Low FPS, stuttering, screen tear, lag

EDIT: nevermind on the precision weapons lol. Apparently there is a bug with 32:9 that makes the reticule 2x bigger than where the bullets actually go. Playing the game on 16:9 seems to resolve on all my complaints.

My thoughts and suggestions for improvement. Note: I am using KBM.

PROS:

  • grapple - amazing addition, feels exactly like it should. Seems properly balanced and leads to awesome plays. - all equipment - honestly all equipment is awesome and fun. Drop wall seems a little weak though. - BR - feels exactly like I’d want it to. So satisfying, so consistent. - Sniper - I only really got much use in training drills and have heard some complaints of it in arena but overall It felt awesome - Movement - Movement is fantastic. The way sprint is done is I believe a perfect balance.CONS:

Pistol sucks - The bloom + low bullet mag + crazy fast fire rate + low mag size on pistol do not work well on KBM (didn’t try controller). It’s just not possible to move your hand fast enough to hit the next shot on a strafing opponent, or even get a kill within 1 clip, unless you’re literally shroud.

I have two 50’s in Halo 3, top 20% Onyx in Reach, and a 25 In H3 MCC PC on KBM just solo queuing. I am no God but I am very good at this game on both controller and KBM and it should not be this hard to get basic kills with the primary gun.

And even when I do slow down enough to hit shots, it just seems like my bullet disappear half the time. I think part of the problem is that the outer reticle is huge but your bullets only go in the inner reticle while pacing, and it is very hard to tell when you actually have that tiny hole on their head. IMO some more bullet mag would be ideal, but at worst at least remove or at least reduce that outer circle when the bloom is reset. Replacing it with the Halo Reach DMR reticle (smaller outer circle which gets bullet mag and the bloom expands beyond this) would be ideal.

FIX (pick 2):
Replace with Reach reticle
slightly increase bullet magnetism
Add 2 bullets to clip
Decrease first rate by ~10%.

Commando too inconsistent - Honestly really the only time I was enjoying gunfights was with the BR, because the commando already didn’t feel like it worked. Was just not consistent.

Sometimes I’d 7 someone like nothing, and other times I’d literally fire a whole clip when they are 2 shot and would just get extremely unlucky with the bloom. The bloom reminds me very much of the Reach DMR bloom where you’re “supposed” to let it reset at mid range, but ultimately you can get lucky often enough that by spamming that it incentives you to just use it full auto at mid range.

IMO you need to either make it so auto always works at mid range (TU DMR) or never (eg Reach Pistol). Or if I could tap fire that would be better. IIRC it first 2-3 bullets every time I tap it and always seems to have a firing delay that just make tap firing with it feel very wrong.

FIX (pick 1):
slightly reduce the auto fire rate and add 1 less bullet to body to kill or 1-2 more bullet in mag so that you can still get the kill even tho it’s inconsistent
Tune bloom to make auto never viable at medium range or always viable
remove delay/burst so that tap firing can be viable at mid range

maps and weapons incentivize CQC play - Largely because of the above issues, and that there is only two BR’s on the map at any point in time: The game plays far closer range that past Halo’s. Playing mid range just leads to 75% of your kills getting away. Goes down to 50% with or less with a BR but still everyone is just like “that guy is shooting me at range? yeah no thanks I’ll dip out and find someone to melee kill”.

This seems further compounded by the way the maps are designed, with lots of walls and coverings compared to previous games. You can see across the whole map, but you can’t get a kill across them. They might play a lot better with BR starts, but as it stands, trying to shoot someone outside of close range is a waste of time.

Even before we discovered the BXB glitch, my buddy and I had given up picking up the mid range guns or trying to use the Pistol/AR at medium range and instead just ran around sprinting and meleeing people and were getting top of the score board. But ARRRRRRRRRR melee or pistolpistolpistolpistolpistolpistolpistol reloa— MELEE is just dumb and boring and a waste of Halo’s potential.

FIX:
allow me to select BR starts from multiplayer menu (tolerable but not ideal)
Make commando and pistol more consistent, pistol with more range
Redo all your maps (not a fix)

Heatwave too weak - I love the heatwave it is so cool, but it just never made sense to pick up over your pistol and your fists.

FIX:
make vertical fire way more powerful; high risk high reward? One shot kill even? Or at least a guaranteed two shot if you get 80% of the bullets on them

That’s all for now.
