I love what 343 has done so far with Halo Infinite and had a blast playing it this past weekend. As a long-time Halo fan since Halo 3, I wanted to give 343i some feedback based on my experience with the PC version of the Technical Preview (playing with an Xbox Controller).
PC Specs:
- ASUS ROG STRIX GL703VM
- Intel i7-7700HQ Processor
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
- 2TB Sabrent Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD
- 1TB HDD
- 32GB 2400MHz DDR4 RAM
What I loved:
The game looks amazing and feels just like Halo should. I found the gameplay and mechanics to be a good compromise between the old Halo gameplay and the newer games and the pacing was good. I thought it was smart to have the walking speed close to the sprint speed. I personally liked the ability to slide and didn’t mind the ability to zoom with weapons like the AR.
All weapons were solid/polished and were satisfying to use (including the AR and sidekick). The implementation of equipment in the game was very refreshing and one of the major things “Halo” was missing since Halo 3. The Grapple Shot was so much fun to use and the animations for the Active Camo/Overshield looked awesome. The bots were impressive and surprisingly difficult (already gave feedback in bot-specific feedback thread).
The graphics and sound design are incredible. The audio for the guns had a real punch to it and the audio feedback when you get a kill is extremely satisfying. It was a very nice touch for the guns to sound different depending on where you are on the map (inside a building and in the open).
The soundtrack gave me flashbacks to the original Halo games (from Bungie) while still sounding fresh and new. Upon starting the game, I stopped to appreciate the soundtrack at the main menu (and after a MP game).
Overall, the amount of work and love put into the game to make the perfect Halo (that is modern while staying true to its roots) clearly shows.
Needs improvement (and wishlist):
Although I had a blast with the technical preview, there were a few things that might need some improvement.
It felt weird that the motion tracker only shows people if they’re sprinting or shooting (I preferred how Halo 3’s motion tracker worked, where you’re only invisible when you move slowly). It would also be nice if the medals were larger so they were easier to see (maybe show them off to the side so they don’t impede your ability to see in front of you - like the MCC).
I would have also liked to see more equipment in the game (like the shield regen field, powerdrain, and flashbang from Halo 3). The drop shield (forgot what it was called) also appeared to deploy a bit too slow, which also messed up the bots because they would attempt to deploy them only to get killed just before it was fully deployed (in Halo 3 the bubble shield was immediate).
Although I love the visual design of the sniper rifle, I felt that it was difficult to work within a match. I’m not 100% sure why, but it could have been that it zoomed in more than I was used to (I’m used to the Halo 3 and Halo Reach Sniper Rifles). If the sniper rifle was indeed designed to behave like the Halo 3 or Reach Sniper, then it’s possible the bots were too good for my sniping skills…
There were some performance issues. The game ran at around 40 FPS at 1080p on average and my GTX 1060 struggled at the default settings (didn’t play around with the graphics settings much). The game also crashed once during a match. Loading times were really long despite having an M.2 SSD (although I’m sure this is due to the nature of the current build and won’t be an issue later). There were also some asset pop-ins at the start of the academy shooting drills. Occasionally, the sound for the gameplay would be muffled for an entire match (I think this only happened when I joined a match while it was in progress).
For customization, it would be nice to get a preview of what your spartan AI will sound like during a game (so it would be easier to select one that suits your personality). It would also be great if we can to customize our emblem and banner just like the MCC.
Although the attention to detail for some destructive items in the environment is impressive (how electrical boxes would explode when shot, breaking tables, etc…), some animations appear to be missing for water. As one would expect, shooting into the water created a small splash for each bullet. However, throwing a grenade into the water didn’t make a splash at all (both when the grenade hit the water and when it exploded underwater).
This last part is going to make me sound like a brute (pardon the pun). Personally, I very strongly believe Halo Infinite should have a Mature (M) rating and would really like to see more blood effects during gameplay. Including blood as a red mist was a step in the right direction, but ideally we would have lots of blood splatter on walls/ground after someone is shot similar to what you see in Halo 2/3 (being able to paint a room in Bungie’s Halo CE was a bit overkill though). If practical, it would be interesting to go a step further and experiment with other effects such as showing visible damage to bodies including bullet holes with realistic blood on the surrounding armour (possibly cracked armour/visors on bodies) and having the skewer pin people against a wall like the nail gun in FEAR (it certainly feels like the type of weapon that will do that). Toning down or removing the blood/gore to create a game that is rated T will not attract more players. Because of this, it would be best for 343 to stay true to the tradition of including blood/gore in Halo (especially if the flood is involved, it would be very underwhelming otherwise). This very small but very significant detail will make a lot of long-time fans very very happy.
Overall, you guys did a fantastic job with the game and it was a real pleasure to be part of the Technical Preview. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of the game during the next flight and playing the game this Holiday!
Thanks so much for the invite! Keep up the good work!
