SOLVED*
When attempting to launch the Halo Infinite Technical preview some individuals may be met with an error message that reads “Microsoft basic render driver was chosen as graphics device. Please ensure you have a directx 12 compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer”. This error message occurs even when the graphics card is directx12 compatible. Currently this issue affects Nvidia 1060 3GB graphic cards. If you are met with this error and are looking for a fix follow the steps below. As always this is at your own risk. Step 1 Check to see if you have directx12. (There is not much point in checking if the graphics card is directx12 compatible as most if not all new graphics cards today support directx12.) Open windows search and type in “dxdiag” and run the program. Under “System” at the bottom one of the last things in the list is “DirectX Version”. Ensure this says “DirectX 12”. If it does not, update to directx12. Attempt to relaunch after updating. Step 2 Check to see if your graphics card is up to date. You’ll have to go to your card manufacturer for this. Attempt to relaunch after updating. Step 3 Find your steam library that you downloaded the technical preview to. From here go to SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\MGS Test App 6\data\hardware. Find the text file that is applicable to you. For myself it’s GPU_Nvidia.txt. Step 4 Rename this text file to anything you want. Make sure you can revert this name change if needed. Step 5 Attempt to relaunch the game.
Reminder Follow these steps at your own risk I am not responsible for any losses from following these steps.
List of graphics card affected:
0x10DE, 0x1b84, GP104 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB]
0x10DE, 0x1c02, GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB]
The game hangs on the loading screen (black screen with three dots in the upper left).
I tried to move the game to 3 different ssd and it doesn’t work anyway.
I got both emails but I didn’t get any messages and on the halo insider profile page there isn’t even a my flights section at the bottom. I opted out of console flighting so where’s my code?

if you are using a AMD gpu make sure you update to the latest drivers.

I am having this issue also do you have a 1060 3gb.
Mouse zoom option [Toggle: hold/click]
Could you please change this so you can do both?
Like you can in Halo MCC PC
Example: When in gameplay, I switch my play style when it comes to zooming: I hold to quick zoom in close quaters but at longer rangers I like to click to zoom instead of holding.
The game is frankly unplayable. Stutter everywhere. 100% CPU usage everywhere. Low poly models from time to time.
Keyboard and mouse has a about .5 to 1 second of input lag; forced to use a controller.
It seems the game runs slightly smoother if I just stand still and don’t do anything, maybe something to do with texture loading?
Tried High, Medium and Low settings.
Tried turning Async Compute on and off.
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and EVGA RTX 3070 Ti FTW3 Ultra. 1440P 144Hz. Latest drivers.
Edit
After moving the game to my Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD, the CPU usage caps at around 85% as opposed to 100%. So that’s an improvement. But it has not decreased the severity of any of the other issues.
After some more tweaks, I have made the game “playable”. It is still awful but at least I can shoot and even kill people now. 15 kills instead of my usual 1.
Minimum Framerate: 48
Maximum Framerate: 72
CAS Sharpening: 0%
Everything else as low as it can get, except resolution.

> Hey so I have both of my emails for the flight but when I check my messages there’s no code or instructions for downloading the infinite beta
Do you have a my flights section on your halo insider profile page? If yes click on additional information. If not same and I don’t know how to fix it
PC Specs:
AMD Ryzen 5950X
RTX 3070 Ti
32GB G.Skill Trident Z 3200mhz DDR4 memory
Samsung M.2 NVME SSD (has the game installed on it)
ASUS 1440P 165hz monitor
I noticed 2 really bad bugs for me regarding KB/M binding:
For reference, I’m a lefty, mouse in the left hand with thumb buttons, keyboard in the right hand.
Binding move forward to Left Mouse Button, binding Move backward to K, binding Scoreboard to backspace and binding push to talk to - (minus) crashes the game relatively consistently
Not sure why, but my keyboard and mouse bindings get reset after a crash, but this doesn’t happen all the time, sometimes this crash also resets other settings in the menu too.
Load times are a bit on the longer side right now loading from my m.2 NVME SSD, not the longest but relatively on the long side.
As for performance, it’s relatively smooth! Although I have noticed that my framerates are quite inconsistent from what I would think they would be. Running the game at 2560x1440 and settings at all low vs all ultra give’s a not so big difference in performance change[
Now yes those are excellent framerates, but I feel judder, like each frame isn’t coming in consistently leading to a high framerate, yet choppy experience. The only way I’m able to mitigate this is to lower the resolution scaling, and pairing it with low settings cause the judder to go away to create a smoother experience.
I wonder if this could be a VRAM bottleneck? I’m not sure I don’t have the tools to properly test this at the moment.
The dynamic resolution option for targeting minimum framerate’s is really nice, I like that!
I’m really excited to see how the full release of the multiplayer and the campaign will fare. Right now this feels excellent and it’s exciting

Nope don’t see anything like that. I checked back and I still do have my emails inviting me to this flight . I might have to contact support.
Some feedback for Graphic Options (Cannot stress this enough, you need to follow what CoD and other games do with these options):
Remove minimum/maximum framerate option as it can be confusing (not aligned with other big game video settings) - Allow a custom fps slider (1-unlimited) - Allow fullscreen mode and aspect ratio (have issues with g-sync playing games in borderless windowed) - Allow option to set monitor refresh rate (30hz,60hz,75hz,90hz,120hz,144hz,165hz,180hz,240hz etc.)
Other things I have noticed:
Inconsistent frametimes (will elaborate below) - Screen flickering when in menus during games - Lack of control presets - VERY hard to distinguish enemies (not sure this recolour system is going to work, need to stick to red vs blue system of old or and add the ability to change the enemy team colour (green/black/yellow/purple/white etc.) - Medals and points in middle of screen can be distracting (halo 3 medal system is the best) - Sensitivity is off (moving up/down is so slow regardless of setting, and aim assist seems rather week on controller compared to Halo 5) - Pistol feels weird with such a fast fire it rate reminds me of halo 2 pistol. I recommend lowering fire rate and increasing damage slightly (closer to halo 1 and halo 5 pistol) - Bloom on sniper rifle and the minor delay between shots could be reducedI know it is a technical preview but frametime is very inconsistent no matter what video settings I use (changed combinations of min/max refresh rate, vsync, etc.)
rtx 3080 with latest drivers
9-10900k
32gb 3200mhz ram
high preset
2160x1440p @ 165hz
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to test this out, I will be forever grateful. Big kudos to the entire team for getting this out for us during these tough times. Hope you are doing well <3 Stay safe.
Something I noticed playing on a laptop with a gtx 1650 and 3rd gen i5, often the game would crash while changing settings, especially when I was adjusting my controller layout. Often it would crash the game after changing one or two, but it was rather inconsistent. I haven’t tried my amd desktop yet to see if it happens there as well. Also turning off Spartan chatter does nothing cause I still hear it even when the setting is visibly off.
@snickerdoodle can we get a weapon feedback thread? Or should we just post that where ever?
Hello, first of all, I’m really loving what I’ve got the privilege to experience so far! The gunplay is on point, visuals are really appealing (all the extra work the team put in is really showing off), and the sound design is just chef’s kiss. I’m really excited to dig deeper into what you all have instore for us. Aside from the performance problems with others mentioned (and what was already discussed in the official Technical Preview Livestream), my really problem has been the keybinding controls for the armory/customization.
Using the two bracket keys to rotate the character feels strange. I wish I could just right click and drag to spin my spartan till they’re too dizzy they can’t stand. Also having the ability to just click on the icon of whatever armor piece/coating I want instead of having to hit F would be really appreciated. Maybe flipping those two keys would help! Left click to equip, F to pull up lore/attachments.
I know it was a tough day for the team trying to get this flight up and running so… Thank you for the hard work to give us this quick little peak into your game.
3440x1440
Game runs at 40-60 fps, mostly in the 50s somewhere. Unplayable, for real. I would have expected like 120fps straight for an Arenashooter like this.
Would like to have the option to use selected resolutions, such as 2560x1440 or just 1920x1080 - means, i could change to wqhd on my 34" ultrawide monitor and it would run with black bars and 16:9 instead of 21:9. Right now i can only downsample from my native resolution, no other options there.
Needs Fullscreen option
Mouse feels sluggish in the menus.
I would like to set my main and secondary weapons to 1 and 2 keys like in every other shooter on PC.
2x RTX 2080 Ti - Intel i9-9900k - 32gb ramPC performance is poor. Now I understand that it’s a flight and optimization isnt going to be at where the latest dev build is. Right now at 2560x1440 (16:9) I’m seeing avg of 60fps on the lowest graphical settings. If I bump it to my monitors native 5120x1440 (32:9) that drops down to 35fps max, no thanks.
The main culprit outside of basic optimization would have to be this "Borderless fullscreen’ check box, it needs to go. There’s three options on PC;
windowed - borderless windowed, and - fullscreen. This flight doesn’t allow for fullscreen and this needs to change because that right there is a huge drop in FPS, and we’re talking 20-30 FPS lost by not playing in fullscreen. Get rid of the single option check box that swaps us between windowed and borderless and give us a drop down with fullscreen option.
The other thing, which will no doubt be in the final release but I’ll mention it anyway; Please have DLSS. It’s a must for any game that requires performance, especially when you get into ultrawide and super ultrawide where you take a large FPS hit.
With fullscreen, DLSS and good optimization you should happily see 90fps on high graphics at 5120x1440, three times better then what I’m seeing now
