Infinite Tech Preview – PC Specific Feedback

> I was running the game on a 1080, and after doing so many things I got the game to run at 60fps at 1080p. I think the game needs better optimization, but there’s still time to fix that, so I won’t worry about that.

> I love the game so far, but the speed of it is a bit too fast. Feels like other fps and I know halo for being a bit slower paced, but I can live with it. My one little concern is the spread on the AR, if I can get long shots with it, what’s the point of using my pistol? So it’s honestly more of balancing issue with, maybe slow the game a bit and increase the spread of the AR to what it was in the original halos.

I second these statements. The AR on this tech-preview seems a bit to strong, the spread is tight and only shifts near end of the magazine. The pistol is practically a sniper, with the AR coming in close behind it. I felt the BR was a little underwhelming. The sound of the BR did not sound meaty, the dmg felt off as you can use a pistol and win fights just as easy. I avoided the BR due to the fact the pistol was pretty much better hands down in 90% of the encounters. Just posting feedback from my perspective, i hope to see further balance changes to these three guns as they make up a majority of the gameplay.

i5/1060

I was able to log about 25ish hours, but I usually like to chill in lobby like the good old H3 days.

Graphics: 60 Maxed FPS maybe a problem for PC users, uncapped FPS and ability to lower other graphic options to optimize PC performance
Audio: Not many issues other than start up music readjusting its own volume, more bass on footseps + player generated sound cues

Now onto the meaty:

Gameplay

Movement: Movement felt smooth with good pacing, jump height is good, sprint might need a speed increase

Weapons:

Completed Pistol, AR, BR, and rifle drills 15k+ score

Pistol
feels like a BB gun with a high TTK

BR
Audio + visual improvements to help enhance fight + kill experience (Perfect 4 Medal + Headshot sound on kill)

Looking forward to new content

Playing on a 5600x and an rtx 3080 at 1440p, if I remember correctly I get like 80 fps on low. Didn’t check utilization but I’d expect better fps considering the hardware.

PC Specs:

  • CPU - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor - GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SC - Ram - 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 - Motherboard - ASRock AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4Feedback:
Overall, I really enjoyed playing the tech preview. The gunplay feels real smooth and I love how you guys implemented sprint in a way where it’s not that much faster than walking but it’s there so you can slide and what not; that’s an excellent middle ground for players who don’t want to sprint and players who do. In addition, the weapons feel fantastic.

Although there are a few “quirks” that I feel I need to mention with some of the weapons:

  • The Bulldog needs a wider spread because, since it’s meant to be a shotgun, it feels very focused at closed-quarters combat; and possibly also needs to deal more damage since it takes around 3-4 shots to kill an enemy. Not sure if that’s intentional or not but those are my thoughts on it. - The scope reticle for the Battle Rifle could be a bigger (like Halo 3’s) since I feel like it’s small enough where I really need to precisely focus my eye sights on the enemy. But I guess that’s just my problem and I have to adjust to it.Now, moving on to equipments. Simply put, I love them, especially the grappling hooks where you can basically swing around the map (Kind of like Spider Man lol). And I also like how the equipments are finite where you need to pick them up around the map and can only use them for a certain amount; makes it balanced all around.

Though I do have one thing to point out about a particular equipment: I don’t really find the shield equipment all that useful because the enemy can either take out the shield blocks (that forms the shield itself) or throw a grenade at an angle where it’ll land next to the player behind the shield (me). If they were completely indestructible (like Halo 3’s for example) then they would have more use to them IMO. And I know you could shoot through them but it’s still not as viable as Halo 3’s.

Now regarding to the flight performance and graphics, based on my PC specs, I was getting around 60 FPS on all low and around 55 FPS on all high. On top of that, the graphics look extremely fuzzy and a bit blurry as well and I’m not sure if that’s due to the nature of the flight build or because my GPU isn’t on par with what the flight specs requirements are. In addition, I’ve had quite a few crashes happen and while some were random (where I was simply playing in matches), others would occur whilst changing keybinds in the settings (while in main menu); specifically where I would change the voice chat button and it’d crash immediately after. Also I’m unable to change the keybind for opening chat.

Those are my thoughts and feedbacks that I can think of at the moment but overall, the flight went extremely positive and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I look forward to future flights and the launch! Keep up the great work 343!

Please 343, I would like the old medals to come back, the classic came back and the old medals should also come back, these new medals personally I did not like, the halo 3 or halo reach are better. Please!!

I second this. There are several examples of the color coded medals being hard to distinguish from each other that would be solved by reverting to how they were before. One example is the Running Riot and Rampage medals being the same color, so the only distinguishing factor between the two is the number points on the star.

Generally, the new medal colors only add confusion.

117% agree with him. NONE of my frieds liked the new designs. Back to OG H2/3!

Some observations during the flight:

  • Averaging around 40 - 50 fps on lowest graphical settings at 1440p. - Screen flickering (in menus) and weird colored lights appearing along the bottom of the screen. - Occasional crashes on settings screen, control settings being reset. - Changing keyboard language crashed the game. - Sometimes after a game the game will tell you it is still in matchmaking when it is not, and you will be unable to cancel it. - Clambering sometimes phases you through the surface and back onto the ground.

Enjoyed the tech preview massively! The multiplayer took a few games to get used to but was super enjoyable, the shooting range was great for warming up and testing a few of the new weapons and the battle pass was interesting (even with the limited options). Obvs can’t wait to get hands on with vehicles too

Only a couple of issues I came across while playing:

  1. Audio directions seemed to be a bit strange at times? Especially when trying to determine where I was being shot from in the multiplayer sessions.
  2. Every time I tried binding “Push-to-talk” to ` (key to the left of 1) it would crash the game entirely.
  3. The Spiker (the stake launcher?) didn’t feel too great when trying to use it? It kind of seemed like a hard-to-aim rocket launcher with no splash damage? (Seemed a bit more lackluster compared to other power weapons) (admittedly I’m also a potato at aiming on PC, but it definitely felt a bit weaker)
  4. I’ve not played a Halo game in MP for a number of years (probably not very intensively since Halo 3? Did play subsequent games, just not the MP) and may have gotten used to it from other games but maybe a bit of a grenade indicator could be nice? (I can’t remember if it was a thing in the past or if it would ruin things if it was added!)

Other than that, I didn’t come across any other technical issues while playing (apart from maybe some of the crazy ragdoll physics from melee kills, but those are hilarious!). So I’d say it was one of the smoothest beta tests I’ve done before! (and smoother than many full title releases!)

Well I am very happy with the product so far. It looks great and feels great too. There needs some weapon tuning but thats expected. I am sad to see assassinations were missing I hope they return asap. The plasma rifle is a great gun that will change the game. The plasma pistol on the other hand under performed. Poor tracking and shoots very slow compared to any Halo title. The game got very buggy when you crouched and tried to move that needs to be fixed right away. The maps all played well and felt smooth to traverse well done there. The Ravager needs to be fixed also. Its overcharged shot should drop shields with one shot if directly hit on a enemy but isn’t. Also I love the fire pool it creates but looking awesome is all that happens. I hit multiple enemies with overcharged shots and they just stood in fire puddles un affected which was disappointing. Still some work to do but very happy over all. Thoughts ?!?!

> > - The first day, it was impossible to get a coating working. Even if I equipped it, in the menu and in game, it reverted to the basic one. Now, it seems to be working well always. - In medium, high or ultra graphic options, there is a flicker in some lines from my spartan model when I’m the menu or in customization. Dunno if it’s on my end. - In my personal opinion, the navigation in the customization screen is slow. I need to go back several times to get to another category. Maybe with a side bar or one under the preview of the items, we could navigate faster to the previous categories. - It would be awesome to have a preview of some of the graphic settings. - Please, consider having a representation of vram usage next to the graphics settings. - There are some games that scan your system and provide you with an optimized graphical option. Have you considered this? Thanks for the invite!!!

> So. Benchmark function ingame? To measure predicted FPS and VRAM usage.

Yes. That’s the word. A benchmarking function that show how changing the graphic settings would impact the vram for example

PC Specs :
Ryzen 7 3700x
Vega 56
16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200
Samsung 980 PRO NVMe
1440p

I know its a tech preview, but It ran horribly for me. I hope my info provides usefulness.
On the lowest settings, with fov at 100, I averaged around 45-55fps, depending on the map. But it was super unstable. I tried all sorts of graphics combinations with no luck thats the best I could get. I ended up going to 1080p and a smaller window to play on and it was better, temporarily. The unstable and uncapped 60fps really takes a hit on precision while aiming.

Bugs :

  • FOV reset like every 5 games
  • Screen flashing/flickering in academy, when switching guns
  • Whole setting reset multiple times over the weekend
  • Times where the leaderboard wouldnt display

Again. Thanks for the opportunity. I enjoyed it a lot. I’m not much of a mp gamer but with this preview I am considering becoming one.
Just some things I found weird.

  • in arena, the audio was messed up for me. I could only hear the music and the guns.
  • the shadows were the same in ultra, high and medium. They flickered as well in all three options.
  • there were no contact shadows for the objects on the wall in the weapons drills.
  • I had to configure my controls back when I stopped playing for more than 10 hours.
  • the odst bots would remain frozen and then suddenly 180 you in the outdoors map that was not Mombasa.
  • the game would send me to my desktop whenever I tried to remap the PRESS TO TALK key.
    Congrats!!

I admit my PC isnt the best, but its usually capable. This had me running 100% at all times, on lowest gfx settings. I had to go to task manager and limited the cores the game could use to 10(out of 24) to run smooth without overloading my PC. I think the needler is too quiet I could never tell when I was being shot by one until I blew up and it was too late to move. The pistol is OP, which reminds me of old halo days, but the rate of fire needs to be slowed down if its going back to that. The BR and new automatic DMR seemed useless to me with the pistol being so strong with such a high rate of fire mixed with the AR. I also think plasma grenades bounce too much, weird detail but just my opinion. The new shotgun feels week for a shotgun and either needs a wider spread or a longer range or faster fire rate, or maybe a mix of all of them. Overall I think most of the weapons need sound improvements. Overall im very excited to play this game. keep up the good work!

Great flight, Thank you 343i for the chance to participate.

I play on PC with a controller. I like having little aim assist / magnetism, but I feel like it could be increased by a hair. Not by much, just a little. It’s difficult to hit enemies with precision weapons like the BR and Commando which has never been an issue before.

Really really enjoyed playing this flight. Thank you for the invite 343i, can’t wait to be apart of the next (if there is one).

Give me your all’s overall thoughts…

See you on the battlefield Spartans.

Overall I think this was a good demonstration of how the game will be at launch. That being said the glaring performance issues are something that cant be ignored. 35-50 FPS on a high end PC?! 2080 super, 32 gigs 3600 mhz ram, i9 9700k. It really makes no sense.
However something i did not like at all was selecting armor coatings and weapon skins and the like. i felt it was clunky and unintuitive. Theres no reason to have to click on the item ands either press F or click the tiny tiny box to confirm the selection. It should be a one click stop, i felt it really slowed down the whole experience and it was honestly very unenjoyable to have to try to continually select and deselect every item just to apply new ones.

Hi 343 after all is said and done this is a VERY VERY VERY good game. It is unmistakably Halo at its core. Just please fix the sniper just a bit (give or take 2-3% in actual bullet trajectory so no scopes can be pulled off fluidly after waiting patiently for the bloom to go down) and the grenades must weigh 50 pounds cause I will do the ol classic “flip up my gun to the sky and launch a grenade” strat and I watch my grenade float up a tiny bit and miss even landing on a ledge that my spartan could clamber up. So it’s like “oh great I just wasted this grenade cause my ultra powerful super soldier can barely lob it up a 6 foot ledge great” and then I look at Halo 2 or Halo 3s grenades and it’s just so much more effective in big battles but also small battles too. There is no velocity to these grenades like in the last few games. Needs adjustment.

Besides that I never lost a match. The bots are way too easy. Gotta change up their starting strats EVERY match or it’ll be a steaktacular every time.
