Infinite Tech Preview – PC Specific Feedback

PC Specs
CPU: Intel I9 9900K
GPU: GTX 2080
RAM: 32gb

First I want to start off by saying I didn’t get to play for two days of the preview due to troubleshooting a problem that arose after installing the game. I had a problem where the launcher was telling me I had the wrong version of windows and needed to download Windows Fall Creators 1709 update when my rig was running the Windows 10 21H1 19043 update. After diving into the crash logs I found that the game was running into a problem with Sonic Studio 3. After uninstalling the software I was finally able to get the game up and running. There seems to be a packet loss problem with the game when Sonic Studio 3 is installed the launcher tends to come to a complete halt when encountering the software.
On Sunday I played both the PvE and PvP game modes and I personally feel that the game is going in the right direction for the base gameplay experience. It feels more on the lines of what we got with Halo2 and 3. The map design has gone back to three lane system making the completive gameplay feel pleasant with the main focus going back to the importance of map domination and locking down those force multipliers. The gun play was done very well and the sound design was pleasant. One of my big concerns with the multiplayer coming from playing other big name free to play games like CoD Warzone and Apex Legends is the problem with cheating. Unless there is a Hardware ban most of the people that use cheats will be able create a new account and be back into the game within minutes. This was one of the reasons why CoD warzone lost so many players over its life time and the blatant disregard to the problem by the game studio.

The game is a lot of fun, I got several bugs that I already reported
I really liked the experience, it is the best Halo game that I have been able to enjoy in a long time.

Something that I did not like was the operation of the motion sensor in Player VS Player, I feel that it is an unnecessary nerf and it complicates the game a lot at a tactical level. As a casual halo gamer since the beginning of the franchise I am very happy with 343i’s work on this test, the whole game feels balanced and fun to play. The bots were a challenge in ODST, they look like beginning players and are an excellent addition to the franchise.

Finally I would like to request an increase in the optimization for PC, having an RTX graphic I could not play the game fluently at 1080p and there were several graphic errors that are totally expected in a test

I didn’t have any major issues, game played great on my hardware, i5 9600k and 3070 with 16gb ram, at ultra wide 3440x1440. First I tested using an Xbox one controller. Then I tested with the Ps5 dual sense controller by using the controller settings through steam, feels really good to play this game with that controller, as odd as it may seem lol. Thanks 343 the invite, I will be sure to participate if invited to any future flights and looking forward to release.

RAM can be an extreme bottleneck if you have the 2666mhz compared to 3200mhz. On 2666 I was able to run medium graphics while feeling stutter. Have replaced the RAM with the same amount but with 3200hmz and it is a LOT better, I can play on ultra (Texture high bcs Vram) and no stutter felt (70fps)

Here some issues I encountered during these few days: (drivers up to date)

  • I got several time black screen before party start, during more than a minute and was kicked for inactivity while I can do nothing about it.

  • Rarely I can’t even start a party while I click to start and have to relaunch totally the game.

  • Pictures often don’t appear in customization, season pass or while I reach a new level of the season pass at the end of a game. they are replaced by colored scares instead.

  • One time I made some changes in customization but it was take in account. And checked it again without succes and have to relaunch totally the game to fix it.

  • There is clipping here and there and it can easily be noticed on static screens like the main menu and customization screen. It makes the
outlines dirty, it’s not clear. I tried with default high setting and ultra but they still appear.

I have certainly forgot some others…

Now when I bind push to talk it crashes my game

I have been experiencing an issue where my keybind to pull up the action menu in game that shows how many kills and deaths was unbound. When I attempt to rebind it back to tab, the game will crash shortly after leaving the settings menu. If I leave this setting alone I am able to play without crashing.

PC Spec:
CPU - AMD R5 1600 (Overclocked to 3.8Ghz all core)
GPU - NVIDIA GTX 1080
RAM - 16GB 3000Mhz CL16
Storage (for game) - M.2 SATA 128GB SSD (kinda cheap, pulled from some laptop)
Display - 1080p60Hz

Overall I feel the game is in an alright place. I never had my weapon model disappear, but when joining a match that already began I did have most audio except for Spartan Chatter become very soft. I set both the minimum and maximum framerate targets to 60FPS and it got rid of most issues besides server side jitter and desync.

I think that some of the default keybinds are weird, like F for swap weapons and G for grenade being right next to each other and being relatively easy to mishit in the middle of a firefight.

I felt the recommended video settings for my system were okay, as it went for medium and that looks okay so far, but I was able to bump it up to high with minimal issues.

I look forward to the next flights and to see how the PC version progresses

Found this on reddit, even with maxed out graphics, some of the textures in Halo Infinite are lower quality than Halo 3.

Overall this is the most fun ive had on a video game for ages and considering this was only against bots on 3 maps, im excited to see whats to come.

Heres my feedback, ill try and keep it brief…

Issues:

  • Performance - I would expect the full game when it releases to be hitting 200fps at a minimum on low settings 1080p on my setup (5600x + 3060ti). During this preview I was getting between 90-110 depending on map.

  • Anti-aliasing cannot be turned off only to low. Gives a blurry look to the game even with the CAS sharpening. I would prefer to have the option to just turn it off completely as this is what alot of PC players are used to. Felt like vaseline was smeared on my screen at times.

  • Input delay / heavy aim - feels like Halo 5 all over again, it may be partly to do with frames but if something can be done to make it closer to modern aiming on MCC that would be ideal.

  • Scoping in feels off in multiplayer especially on the pistol and sniper. My sensitivity didnt seem to match up properly and seemed to slow and clunky.

  • Medals need more character and revert some of the new designs and colours. Something similar to H3 and Reach would be ideal as they were the most visually pleasing.

  • Main menu / searching for game / battle pass / post game screens all seem abit too confusing. I still consider H3 and Reach to have the best menu designs but if going for something more modern with a moving background, maybe look to Warzone and Apex Legends for inspiration on a better layout.

  • Team colour system was confusing at first but did kinda start to get used to it although it may be confusing again when you mix in loads of different coloured armours of real players.

  • Hud in game also seemed abit difficult to see, perhaps I am not used to the positioning of stuff which has moved but certaintly knowing when I was low on ammo and also what equiptment I currently had was not very intuitive.

  • I found it abit clunky trying to pickup oversheild/camo if you already had something in the equiptment slot.

  • Not a fan of it auto swapping to differnet nades picked up as on multiple occassions I would throw what I thought was a frag but turned out to be a spike grenade.

  • Intro clip to a game too similar to H5 and also seems to long and unnecessary.

  • Melee lunge distance possibly a little to long.

  • Difficult to tell when my pistol shots were connecting.

  • EU servers not very good. Similar issue to other Halo’s where the EU server is in Ireland for some reason. Best course of action would be to follow what most other games do and use London and Germany as server locations, this would make the majority of the EU community very happy.Things I liked:

  • Sprint speed is perfect, such a great idea to keep the game feeling classic but also with some advanced options for sliding etc.

  • Movement speed also great. Love how fast you feel even when not sprinting and how it allows you to strafe.

  • Menu music is perfection, gives off old H2/H3 montage vibes. (Anberlin anyone)

  • Maps great size, not too big now that sprint has been toned down.

  • Nice mix of normal jump ledges and clamber. Not all the jumps on the map require clamber which helps add to the classic feel again.

  • Overall the game feels like it plays at a great pace and there is a nice mix of weapons in the sandbox.

Love the Tech preview I think this is the best halo in terms of Movement and weapon tuning and cannot wait for the next flight or lunch of the game. Anyways there’s are a few things that need sorting I feel that the mouse magnetism needs to be increased slightly because it wasn’t good enough when using the sidekick it felt way better using a controller to use the sidekick but I don’t know it could just be me. An option for DLSS when the game launches would be good rather than using the Minimum and maximum fps options like they weren’t bad options but I rather prefer using Nvidia’s DLSS to get the performance and graphic quality I want. And the bugs below needs addressing

I only had a few bugs which were:

  • The game would crash when using Alt to switch grenades mid-game - The game would crash when trying to map the push to talk to caps lock and Scoreboard to Tab - The camera for the intro of every game would be positioned at the chest area of the spartans and in the armour hall it would be the same - Changing the horizontal UI Boundaries makes the Weapon Crosshair disappear So far that was all I encountered, also performance wasn’t too bad for me it ran around 100fps to 120fps when I set the game to minimum fps and maximum fps to 240fps at the resolution at 5120x1440p with ultra graphics it probably could be better because my CPU utilization was only around 40% and my GPU was only around 50-60%. But so far it was enjoyable and playable for the most part.

Same

on a 3070 - 5600x

Also if I tab the score when dead in a match it crashes the game

I’ve really enjoyed this preview, even with all the performance issues it has. Apart from the terrible performance, i think the game needs to improve the flow of the animations to feel more solid. There is a lot of graphical bugs, and i dont know why my game doesnt look very crisp on 1440p in ultra settings (rtx 3070), also i think the graphics needs to be more polished. There is a small detail that doesnt look good in the baazar map, when you shoot at the fruits, it looks very weird when you are destroying them, looks like they have disappeared. The screen calibration doesnt work, and there are graphics settings (like motion blur) that doesnt work.

Despite the problems, i have a lot of fun playing the game, and i love the gameplay. Sorry for my english, im from Spain.

Hey I just downloaded the steam update for the infinite flight and now it suddenly doesn’t work? It won’t even let me get past steam now anyone else having this issue says something about a file being out of place do I have to delete the flight and reinstall?

Yup same. Maybe it’s over? Removed the .exe file.

Edit: Yup it’s over. See twitter 8 minutes ago. https://twitter.com/Halo/status/1422248309561958400

Its most likley the “kill” switch. the update was only a couple of bytes big. Same happened to me. Theres like an hour or so left of flighting. Gather what you feel bout the game and pour it out here for the devs to decode :+1:

The tech preview was really good, I enjoyed the general feedback of hits and how clean the game felt, only problems i had was with the menu bugs, such as the UI and settings just straight up crashing my game with the push to talk binding as said earlier, and some default key binds. But overall, the guns felt good, the movement was smooth and had weight to it, and I overall had a pleasant time.

Oh okay yeah that’s what it seems like I thought they were gonna do another round of pvp testing Lmao I’ll put my thoughts down for the wonderful devs soon

I had a great time with the preview overall. Played about 15 hours. Here’s my main criticisms:

-I really, really dislike the outline system for enemies. I’m fine with it for teammates, but the enemies should just be their in-game models (maybe just a colored name above their head like the old games). It ruins any chance for stealth, and makes target acquisition from a distance WAY too easy. If your goal was to let people show off the armor coatings, it fails there too because the outline almost completely obscures the player’s color choice. This is probably my number one requested change for launch.

-The obvious audio issue when joining a match-in-progress.

-Spartan chatter not being disabled when toggled off. As an offshoot of this issue, I would like to be able to toggle off the personal AI speech as well, I found it got pretty grating after an hour or two. I prefer a pvp game to be quiet outside of sound effects and the announcer.

-Load times were pretty abysmal, even from a pretty fast SSD. The game crashed while loading several times as well.

-I think friendly fire should be turned back on. It allows you to be too careless with grenades, rockets, and things like the ravager’s secondary fire in team games.

-I’ve come to accept sprint, but I think you still shouldn’t be able to recharge your shields while sprinting. This was something Halo 5 got right.

-The plasma grenade effects seem a little to dull, especially when someone is stuck and about to explode.

-It seems like frag grenades can’t knock weapons off their pads. Not sure if this is a bug or intentional.

-Some of the weapons were pretty wonky (ravager, sniper, pulse carbine). Obviously weapon balance will change over time so I’m not too worried about this one for launch. BR felt amazing though, please don’t nerf it like in Halo 5!!!

I have experienced multiple issues in the game.
1: In the Main menu textures will sometimes glitch in and out.
2: In multiplayer my sound will completely stop on certain occasions.
3: In multiplayer, I have had multiple occasions where I will glitch through an enemy right after I try to melee them, and this would lead to my death.
4: when trying to get into a game with a full squad sometimes it will kick one or two of them back into the main menu.

5: I have experienced horrible in-game lag, not on my end. almost game-breaking lag. for reference I live on the south side of the USA. with pretty good internet.
PING ms 32. DOWNLOAD Mbps 93.31. UPLOAD Mbps 65.58. it wasn’t every game, but it did happen too often.

6: settings would on occasion reset after booting up the game.
7: I have not experienced this first hand, but my in-game friends have had on multiple occasions their in-game hud completely disappear for the entire game. They couldn’t even go into settings to fix it.
8: The game seems to be poorly optimized I was getting about 58fps tops most of the time. (pc specs below)
9: Remaping buttons needs improvment. It would not allow me to de-map any buttons and sometimes even trying to replace them it wouldn’t let me.

over all I had a lot of fun playing this flight and I’m immpressed at how well it both looks and feels to play on PC/M/KB. I look foward to next one.
Overall I rate this flight a 7.9/10

ps cheezytacos Did a more indepth report on some of the issues i’ve exprienced.
