Infinite Tech Preview – PC Specific Feedback

  • Odd interaction with melee lunging to an opponent who dies while you are in mid-lunge. Results in a disorienting rubberbanding effect back to where the lunge started and then quickly back to where the opponent was
  • as others have said, the screen shake from melee is too much
  • outlines sometimes do not render which makes an enemy red team member in blue coating really difficult to figure out friend or foe
  • I can’t play the Tech Preview anymore. The low framerate even on low graphics settings coupled with really weird flashing artifacts at the bottom of my screen gave me one heck of a migraine. I’ll try to get screenshots later of it if I feel like braving it again.

i have a 1060 3gb aswell and it gives me the microsoft basic render error aswell. I even updated my drivers before playing, and checked my dxdiag and saw that i indeed do have directx 12

FOV gets reset sometimes

Settings that don’t work:
Spartan Chatter Toggle (doesn’t do anything)
Voice Chat Mode (resets upon relaunch of game)
Field of View (resets upon relaunch of game)
Push To Talk Rebind (crashes game when you use the bind)

Performance isn’t great, getting 40-70fps at max settings on an RTX 3070, Ryzen 5 3600x build.

Gameplay is great, love the movement system and the way the guns look / sound / feel. Visuals are nice too. Just need more maps and PvP!

Listening my PC specs to give a sense of where my PC is at in terms of power:

  • GPU: AMD Vega 56 8GB VRAM - CPU: Ryzen 5 1600x - RAM: 16GB
Here’s my current feedback for the flight

The Good

  • This damn well feels like Halo to me. The gunplay feels exactly like Halo brought into 2021. - With the removal of red vs blue, I thought recognising enemies would be a nightmare. However, this seems to be a non-issue. Though with the asterisk of all the enemies being the same colour, so maybe this’ll become worse when they have more customisation. - The bots seem actually threatening. Maybe I’m just bad at Halo, but they seem competent enough to put up a genuine fight in some cases. - I love the return of the old team icons. - I still would have preffered a colour picker, but the shaders are kinda neat I suppose. - THE ARMOURS LOOK AMAZINGThe Bad

  • The settings/pause menu seems to be flicker if being used at the start of a match and is completely unusable when the screen fades to black for the introduction animations. In my opinion, the menu should be above the black transition. - Open-mic being set as default is awful. I’ve heard people raging, blasting music, or eating doritos into their mic without them even realising. Needs to be push-to-talk by default. Non-negotionable this one, in my books. - The performance is abysmal right now. I’ve barely getting playable frames at Low preset, 55% resolution scaling with my specs listed above. I understand this is a tech preview so I’m hoping this is definitely on the roadmap already. - In relation to the store, I believe hovering over the item with your mouse should trigger a preview of the item instead of needing to click it. Small thing, but very much in need of a change I believe. - The ESC key should not be used to go back a page on the main menu. ESC is well known to be the settings/pause/general menu. I’ve very routinely stepped all the way back to the starting page on reflex of trying to open the menu. The Ugly

  • There appears to be a bright white flicker when previewing helmets. It’s gone in a flash (ha…) but is still pretty annoying. - The plasma pistol sounds… not very good, to put it diplomatically. It sounds very weak, like ‘squidy’ is a word I’ve seen throughout some discord servers. - Along with that, the needler sound is off. The sharp, peircing sound of it’s previous incarnations is gone. I’ve heard some people say it just sounds like an SMG. - The no-shields effects is practically invisible. Without seeing the inital red flash when the shields are broken, it’s near impossible to tell if someone is low. The crackling shield effect from previous games seems to be missing here.

Should make hovering the mouse over an item render it on your armor like navigating with the arrow keys do

Rebinding the push to talk button on keyboard makes me crash

Page is broken so I’ll say it here. An option to change the opacity on enemy red glow and teammates blow glow would be greatly appreciated

I’ve had 2 crashes so far and this is when they happened
While sliding and pressing alt to change my grenade
When I released tab and spawned in the screen went yellow and crashed

For anyone who doesn’t see the code, check your messages RATHER than notifications. If all else fails, check your Halo Insider flight information page!
It should be under ADDITIONAL INFO with the name of the platform and then the code.

Also, changing the default Campaign Menu / Scoreboard binding AND Push to Talk crashes the game. Always.

Technical Feedback:
-As everybody else, performance is awful, framerate is unstable and fluctuates between 20 and 50fps with some stutter once in a while, with everything on low @1080p
-I barely notice my shields are gone, hit indicator and shield effect are either not showing or not noticeable.
-When using my controller, it keeps getting “stuck” where for a few seconds the game keeps repeating my last action (i.e. character keeps turning left or walking backwards) and no input is recorded.
-Super long loading times.
-I know the task manager is not the best at calculating GPU, but still it never goes above 5% and CPU hangs around 35% excluding other tasks.
-Many settings are not being saved.
-Menus feels overall laggy and have white flashes.
-Clicking play often does nothing once the cooldown is over

Gameplay Feedback:
-The spawn point left of the beginning spawn is too close to the edge, holding ‘S’ when you spawn will guarantee you falling off the map
-I feel like starting ammo is very limited
-AI saying ‘Pick up the camo’ when there’s still 20s left is confusing

Using a NVIDIA GeForce 3600 with a Ryzen 5 3600 with the latest drivers, and no matter what resolution settings I run my FPS hovers around 35-45 and has lag whenever I turn to look sharply in a direction (sensitivity set ay 6 currently). Kinda wish I could see if it was more playable on my Xbox One.

  • Average 45-55fps at 4K res - My custom settings resets after closing the game (controller, keyboard and graphics) - Some odd stuttering when i want to edit my spartan, the fps down to 5-10 and go back to 45 when i change the tab to the store or play - .5 seg to 1 seg of input lag with mouse and keyboard - The AA looks crispy at 1440p (please bring DLSS or FSR at least)

An audio issue here. I have my VR headset plugged to my computer and although all my sounds are coming from my audio-interface (scarlet solo, speakers connected to them), voice-chat is coming from the VR headset. I changed the voice-chat to go to my audio-interface, but nothing changed. I assume this is an issue with the default communications device and I would have to set the audio interface as that (but people would assume changing it in-game would fix the issue).

Also, some more audio bugs that happened. When playing, the “audio priority system” went babanas and I could only hear my own gun + me getting shot. This meant that I was looking at teammates getting shot but there was no sound.
Same day, audio started crackling out of nowhere. It bugged my entire system, but restarting the game fixed it. Very weird, wondering if it consumed way too many resources somewhere and couldn’t process audio?

The customization menus on pc with mouse and keyboard feel limiting and might be better to implement a vertical menu that subdivides into the existing horizontal menus. Additionally being able to zoom in/out, turnarounds, and removing the menu hud for screenshots in all customization areas (more importantly the prosthetic and body type menu) would be great.

Hello,

Thank you for having us along for the flight. I would like to see us able to set the look sensitivity alot higher i am maxed out and still am taking way to long to do a 180 if you gave us the ability to go to breakneck speed and let us find where we are comfortable that would be super duper awesome. Apart from that this is so fantastic and i am super excited for the real deal!!!

Ok I have now received a PC invite but its for Halo 2? Help

So for Feedback on performance, though I imagine progress has been made over the the last couple of months as you near the begginning of the end of the production phase and polish time begins. I am currently running an RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, with an OC, a Ryzen 3800x @4.2-4.3GHz and 16 GB of CL18 DDR4 @3600Mhz running at 1440p on a 165Hz Monitor, and achieving an average of 45-60fps on ultra settings, including shaders*, medium around 50-60 and on low around 55-60. All FPS is uncapped. Not sure if it’s an issue with optimisations towards specific hardware, but I guess we shall see during later flights, or differences as new maps are introduced during this one.
Had a few crashes as well, one time I recall when in a match and hitting left alt it tried to change my keyboard language (no idea why) which resulted in said crash, as for others the game simply froze up and crashed, i’m sure logs will tell more. However these are nothing too major and expected for the age of the build.
On the end of gameplay, overall I am enjoying the experience, time to kill imo could be shorted a little by maybe 1/4-1/2 of a second, but hard to tell without having access to the full arsenal of assets that are going to be introduced with the game and the balancing around other modes.
As I’ve noticed others saying the headbob is a little bit of an issue personally, mostly because i’ve had instances where it stops me from seeing an opponent which is about to shoot me more than the headbob itself, though it still feels a little excessive.
Overall the gun play feels smooth, the weapons feel as though they hit hard when you hit a target and it’s satisfying. The SFX do a great job with this too, however personally I would increase the mix on the ambient sounds, turn down footsteps maybe 0.5-1db and give the music a longer fade in during combat sometimes, it’s a little harsh sometimes and gets a little too loud imo.
When it comes to the Pulse Carbine however, I would say the weapon feels good, design looks great but the projectile speed needs to be upped by maybe 1/5-1/8th of it’s current velocity. It rarely hits the target in my experience. Same can be said for the Plasma Pistol, I find it uncommon it will hit a target at long or close range, medium range engagments I’m still looking at about a 50/50 chance, this appears more of a tracking issue than anything else. I don’t know if it has to be a certain distance from the projectile creation to activate the tracking however if it does, maybe activating it slightly earlier would balance it a little better.
